Men in Black<\/p>\n

It was 1997.\u00a0 One of the leading movies of the year was \u201cMen In Black\u201d, starring Tommy Lee Jones as \u201c Agent K\u201d and Will Smith \u201cAgent J.\u201d\u00a0 It was a story of the \u201cMIB,\u201d a secret government agency that managed the aliens that were already here on earth.\u00a0 While the \u201cMIB\u201d had multiple weapons, at the end of each alien \u201cevent\u201d they brought out their \u201cneuralizers\u201d and with a flash of light removed any spectator\u2019s memory of the incident.<\/p>\n

One of the prime investigative sources that \u201cK\u201d used was tabloid newspapers.\u00a0 Early in the script, \u201cK\u201d taught \u201cJ\u201d the value of the tabloids:<\/p>\n

J- I cannot believe you’re looking for tips in the supermarket tabloids.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The National Enquirer\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most successful \u201cnewspapers\u201d in the United States, with circulation just under the Sunday New York Times\u00a0<\/em>and ahead of the Washington Post.\u00a0 <\/em>The difference between the\u00a0Enquirer <\/em>and the Times\u00a0<\/em>and Post <\/em>is that the Enquirer <\/em>is a tabloid paper, one with banner headlines and stories about celebrities that are mostly not true.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s news about the aliens that \u201cK and J\u201d are supposed to control, or the sordid actions of Brad Pitt cheating on Angelina Jolie, the Enquirer <\/em>screams out its headlines from the check-out line of every supermarket in the country.\u00a0 You might not buy \u201cthe rag,\u201d but it\u2019s still in your face \u2013 every time.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a joke.\u00a0 You buy one to have a laugh, to read on a long road trip, to use as an example in classroom of un-vetted journalism or how the Spanish American War started.\u00a0 But while it only sells a million, the front page is seen by hundreds of millions.\u00a0 Those banner headlines are an un-recognized force, quietly planting ideas in the public mind, even if they don\u2019t actually ever read the paper.<\/p>\n

And when the National Enquirer <\/em>took a side in the 2016 election, we didn\u2019t really even notice it.\u00a0When all of the Trump articles and headlines were positive, and all of Clinton\u2019s were negative, it went under conscious perception.\u00a0 But read the headlines, at every check-out counter, the week before the election day:<\/p>\n

And the \u201cbeat goes on,\u201d even recently:<\/p>\n

4\/17\/18 \u2013 Hillary Clinton Plans Her Own Hero\u2019s Burial\u00a0(brain-cancer patient eyes Arlington for eternity.)<\/em><\/p>\n

But what we didn\u2019t know in 2016, is that the publisher of the National Enquirer<\/em>, David Pecker, was not only a Trump supporter, but was allowing the Trump campaign, through Attorney Michael Cohen, editorial control of the paper.\u00a0 Positive articles about Trump, and damaging faked headlines and articles about Hillary were checked with Cohen, who made the final decision about publication.\u00a0 In essence, the Enquirer <\/em>became an arm of Trump campaign.<\/p>\n

In addition, Pecker paid $150,000 for Karen McDougal\u2019s story of a year-long affair with Donald Trump, and then quashed the story.\u00a0It never made the Enquirer<\/em>, or any other paper.\u00a0 This was done in coordination with Michael Cohen, and could be considered an unreported campaign contribution, along with the value of all of the headlines from the election year.<\/p>\n

The Trump era is clearly the time of \u201cReality TV Politics.\u201d\u00a0 With the First Lady wearing signs on her coat, the drama of the morning \u201ctweet,\u201d the barrage of unsubstantiated and false information coming out of the White House, the invention of \u201cfake news,\u201d and now the revelation of the weaponizing of tabloid newspapers; it never seems to end.\u00a0 Last night Tom Arnold added his schizophrenic view to the mix.\u00a0 It would be funny if it wasn\u2019t so serious.<\/p>\n

Maybe it will make a good movie in twenty years.\u00a0Tommy Lee Jones won\u2019t probably be around (the National Enquirer <\/em>I\u2019m sure will let us know) but Will Smith would make a great hero.\u00a0 Or maybe after the \u201cTrump Era\u201d is over, we can all get a flash from the \u201cneuralizer.\u201d<\/p>\n
