Bro Code Rules<\/p>\n

There is a set of rules among boys and men called the \u201cBro Code.\u201d I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen it written down, they are what sociologists call \u201cmores,\u201d but they are none-the-less real. We learn them in young adolescence as we develop close relationships with other guys, and then start to get interested in romance.<\/p>\n

There is no one closer than \u201cbros.\u201d\u00a0 They stick together, they share secrets, they get in trouble, they try things, both legal and illegal, they are the brothers that \u201cbros\u201d represent.\u00a0 They sometimes fight, but in the event of trouble, they have each other\u2019s backs.\u00a0 In fact the true test of how much of a \u201cbro\u201d you are, is when there is a fight.\u00a0 There are those that find a way out, and there are those that find a way to stand up.\u00a0Stand up guys are true \u201cbros.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of the code governs what to do when friends are both interested in the same romantic relationship.\u00a0The code states that the first to express interest, should get to pursue the romance.\u00a0 But the code also recognizes that sometimes love (and lust) trumps all other rules.\u00a0 It allows forgiveness for failing to follow the code when it comes to love.<\/p>\n

And the final part of the code covers when one of the \u201cbros\u201d falls in love, \u00a0and falls away.\u00a0 It recognizes that romantic relationships take all attention and time, and that when it happens, that \u201cbro\u201d will not live up to the other obligations of the code. \u00a0If the romantic relationship is temporary, the code allows the \u201cbro\u201d to be forgiven and come back.\u00a0 If it is more permanent, then the \u201cformer bro\u201d will be forever remembered as part of the group, but no longer a \u201cbro.\u201d<\/p>\n

The alliance that developed in response to the Cold War is like \u201cbros.\u201d\u00a0 The World War II \u201cbros\u201d of the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Canada was joined by Germany and Japan to become the most influential alliance in the world.\u00a0 They had each other\u2019s back, in Korea, in Vietnam, in Iraq and Afghanistan.\u00a0 They had arguments over the Middle East and other issues, but they stood together against the Soviet Union and Communism.<\/p>\n

And like any \u201cbro group\u201d they looked for one nation to be the leader.\u00a0 The United States, the most powerful and most wealthy, used its strength to pursue the goals of the group.\u00a0 Since the 1950\u2019s, this group has been together, surviving falling outs, romances with other groups, wars and depressions.\u00a0They\u2019ve also had great successes including the end of the Cold War and the fall of Communism.<\/p>\n

Now, one of the group seems to be in love with someone else.\u00a0 President Trump is leading the United States to love affairs with autocrats and dictators: Vladimir Putin, Kim Jung-un, Recep Erdogan, Mohammad bin Salman, Xi Jinping. \u00a0\u00a0Even Benjamin Netanyahu, like Trump, can act without much input from his government.\u00a0 Trump is a \u201cpersonal guy,\u201d he relates to the world by how he feels about their leaders.\u00a0 And, since Trump views himself as a decisive and strong \u201cbro,\u201d he relates to other leaders who can make decisions on their own without consultation or vote.<\/p>\n

My expectation is that Trump views the G 7 leaders this way.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Justin Trudeau of Canada is an Obama type liberal, and a kid.<\/li>\n
  2. Macron is a slick operator, but in the end, way too French. \u00a0Trump really doesn’t like to hold hands, with anyone.<\/li>\n
  3. Angela Merkel is a woman who dares to compete with him for leadership.<\/li>\n
  4. Theresa May is weak both at home and abroad.<\/li>\n
  5. Shinzo Abe, a good golfer, and is doing a good job of \u201cschmoozing,\u201d but the Japanese gave up their military.\u00a0 Trump cannot stand weakness, ask Puerto Rico.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So it shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that President Trump has treated the G7 disrespectfully.\u00a0 He did the same thing with NATO (most of the same folks) and even with the European Union, seen by Trump as the antithesis of decisive.<\/p>\n

    The \u201cG6\u201d is complaining that Trump is walking away from the \u201cbro group.\u201d\u00a0 He thinks they don\u2019t really have a choice, that the US is such an important \u201cbro\u201d that they will stick with the group, regardless of what he does.\u00a0And besides, he wants to start a new group, one that has the power to do anything it wants.\u00a0 Trump, Putin, Xi; that\u2019s the \u201cbro group\u201d he wants.<\/p>\n

    If he and his \u201ctheorists\u201d (Bannon, Miller, and Bolton) get their way, the world will be a very different place.\u00a0 The US will be aligned with nations where power rather than ideology is the critical factor.\u00a0 But if the US turns back from the Trump Doctrine towards the \u201cbro group\u201d of democracy, we can only hope that \u201cbro rules\u201d apply.\u00a0 Maybe they will take us back.<\/p>\n
