Powerball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

$749 million dollars is a lot of money.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When the Powerball jackpot reached that amount, there were various articles about how to spend the winnings.\u00a0\u00a0With the Powerball, about half would go to taxes.\u00a0\u00a0That leaves $324 million left to spend \u2013 still not bad.\u00a0\u00a0Financial advisors suggest the winner should spend 10%, $32 million, on whatever they might want.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s to get the \u201cI WON!!\u201d pressure off.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe buy a new house, or car; an island in the Caribbean (not Epstein\u2019s), or a mountain in Western Colorado.\u00a0\u00a0Or build the local high school an indoor track facility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then stash the remainder in investments to take care of finances for the rest of your life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s $290 million invested safely, earning 5% a year.\u00a0\u00a0The amount would generate $14.5 million a year, before taxes (again).\u00a0\u00a0After paying about another $4 million in taxes, you’re left to live on $10 million a year.\u00a0\u00a0I bet I could do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media Spending<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t about winning the Powerball, or even what I would do with the $32 million \u201cspending money\u201d (though that\u2019s a fun topic!).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s about the election of 2026 here in Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0Political campaigns buy \u201ctime\u201d on broadcast and media channels in advance of the campaign season to guarantee they have the spots.\u00a0\u00a0They \u201cfill in the blanks\u201d with ads later on.\u00a0\u00a0And here in Ohio, there’s a pivotal Senate race (Sherrod Brown -D v John Husted- R), and a hotly contested Gubernatorial race (Vivek Ramaswamy \u2013 R v Amy Acton \u2013 D). The time is already committed.\u00a0\u00a0And you guessed it:\u00a0\u00a0$749 million dollars is how much it costs (Dispatch<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s up from the original projection of $440 million.\u00a0\u00a0What happened?\u00a0\u00a0Well the National climate changed:\u00a0\u00a0Trump\u2019s approval rating dropped, with 35% approving and 61% disapproving (Newsweek<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0And the increased costs of gas, food and consumer goods, all made life tougher, not only for regular citizens, but for Republicans trying to run on the how they governed.\u00a0\u00a0And finally, the constant drip of failed Federal government over-reach, from ICE to the Reflecting Pool, soured Americans\u2019 view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what were nearly guaranteed wins in \u201cRed\u201d Ohio for Husted and Ramaswamy, turned into real races.\u00a0\u00a0Both Democrats are within the margin of error, with some polls showing them in the lead.\u00a0\u00a0So both sides, Republican and Democrats, started pouring more money into the campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pox or Diarrhea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cgood old days\u201d, political campaigns started the day after Labor Day.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s September 8th<\/sup>\u00a0this year.\u00a0\u00a0But the \u201cgood old days\u201d are long gone, and the media wars have already begun.\u00a0\u00a0Brown has ads out tying Husted to \u201cbig energy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Ramaswamy is flooding the media with spots that blame Acton for everything that happened during the pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0After all, she was the Public Health Director for Republican Governor Mike DeWine during that time.\u00a0\u00a0She followed the Trump era guidelines, including the original \u201cclose downs\u201d to try to prevent the spread of Covid.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, there were the dreaded \u201cMASKS\u201d, the cloth mouth coverings that became the cause celeb of the right:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHow dare they tell me to cover my mouth!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Husted, well he\u2019s trying the old strategy of tying Brown to Joe Biden.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s July, and there\u2019s plenty of real news to dominate the airwaves (and streaming cables).\u00a0\u00a0Local headlines are focused on sixteen children rescued from a horrific home in Vinton County, and the new virus that gives the victims \u201cexplosive diarrhea\u201d (WCMH<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0But the real explosion is coming:\u00a0\u00a0the explosion of ads claiming every candidate is horrible.\u00a0\u00a0It’s \u201cnegative advertising\u201d, and designed to keep people from coming out to vote.\u00a0\u00a0The design is to suppress the vote, to make voters say \u201ca pox (or diarrhea virus) on both your houses\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Street Money<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Driving down the turnout here in Ohio is considered an advantage to Republicans.\u00a0\u00a0In the more recent Presidential elections, Biden got 45% of the vote and Harris 43%.\u00a0\u00a0So any Democrat has an uphill battle from the start.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic campaigns are aware of this.\u00a0\u00a0And they are aware of the overwhelming boredom created by one campaign ad after another, until everyone is jaded with all the candidates.\u00a0\u00a0The one area that Democrats are supposed to be better than Republicans is \u201cstreet money\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0While that sounds like something that\u2019s illegal, \u201cstreet money\u201d is really just spending money on efforts to get voters to go to the polls.\u00a0\u00a0“Street money” is spent on organizing folks to knock on doors, encourage Democratic voters to show up, and let them know that as difficult as Ohio has made it to vote (we have the strictest voting laws in the country), they can still do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope they saved some money for that.\u00a0\u00a0Otherwise, it\u2019s not likely they\u2019ll get the chance to say,\u00a0 \u201cWE WON\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
