Payable in Blood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the American Civil War, the main sources of public communication were a combination of the telegraph and newspapers.\u00a0\u00a0Reporters would send dispatches \u201cfrom the front\u201d, and newspapers would publish the military outcomes for the world to see.\u00a0\u00a0At the beginning of the conflict, both sides waited for the \u201cgreat victory\u201d, that would signal the end.\u00a0\u00a0But as the war dragged on for four long years, Americans, North and South, realized that victory had a price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was called \u201cthe butcher\u2019s bill\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0the roster of the wounded, missing, and dead.\u00a0\u00a0In the early battles, like Fort Sumter, Bull Run and Wilson\u2019s Creek, the \u201cbill\u201d was relatively short. But after the two-day struggle at Shiloh in the spring of 1862 there were over 23,000 on the list.\u00a0\u00a0Both North and South began to realize how high the cost would be.\u00a0\u00a0And Shiloh was just the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antietam in Maryland had just as many on the list, but lasted only one day\u00a0\u00a0that fall.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fredericksburg in December had \u201conly\u201d 18,000, but two-thirds of those were Union troops. And the next year, 1863, would be even worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americans on all sides no longer looked forward to \u201cnews from the front\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Everyone knew of a father, son, friend, or colleague who was on the battle line.\u00a0\u00a0The dispatches weren\u2019t times for celebration, they were full of dread.\u00a0\u00a0Almost 50,000 casualties in three days at Gettysburg in the summer of 1863.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Over 100,000 lost in the Overland Campaign in May and June in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policies of the Federal government (and the Confederate one) had real consequences.\u00a0\u00a0The Butcher\u2019s Bill wasn\u2019t just paid in taxes or laws, it was payable in blood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an old political phrase:\u00a0\u00a0elections have consequences.\u00a0\u00a0In 2024, like it or not, the United States narrowly chose Donald Trump to be President.\u00a0\u00a0(And for those who argue Trump had an election mandate \u2013 the numbers belie that.\u00a0\u00a0Trump won by 1.3 million, or 1.5% of the vote.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a \u201csqueaker\u201d in American election terms, not a \u201cmandate\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are very real consequences from Trump\u2019s ascension to the Presidency for the second time, and it\u2019s not just about putting his name on the Kennedy Center (or spending a night watching it come down).\u00a0The President who put MMA on the White House lawn and Pete Hegseth in charge of America\u2019s defense, has also adopted policies that have real consequences in the world.\u00a0\u00a0Trump presented America with a war in Iran, and a militarized internal police within our borders.\u00a0\u00a0Both of those include a \u201cbutcher\u2019s bill\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iran War has cost Americans 13 dead, and 381 wounded so far.\u00a0\u00a0But US actions (along with our ally Israel) started a war that has killed over 7500 and injured over 40,000, mostly civilians caught in the crossfire of battle. (Iran War \u2013 US \u2013 13 dead, 381 wounded, totals \u2013 7500 killed, almost 40000 wounded\u00a0Al Jazzira<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here at Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ICE, Border Patrol and other Homeland Security actions (and protests against them) resulted in six dead.\u00a0\u00a0And over forty have died in ICE custody, held in \u201cwarehouses\u201d in conditions that are inhumane.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And the direct ravages to our traditional Constitutional rights, which always included those in the United States \u201cwithout papers\u201d, will continue to have a real price in terms of lives. (ICE custody \u2013 40 dead\u00a0\u00a0(<\/em>ACLU<\/em><\/a>), six dead during protests (<\/em>NY Times<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And even more dramatically, the Trump\/Musk\/DOGE destruction of USAID, America\u2019s exercise in soft diplomacy that influenced much of the third world, has a real \u201cbutcher\u2019s bill\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Harvard\u2019s School of Public Health estimates 750,000 deaths, many of them children, from the sudden severing of American aid to the world in 2025 (Harvard<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Bill Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump and the Republican majority of Congress has cut American health care as well.\u00a0\u00a0Medicaid is already cut to millions of Americans, and plans are for future strictures. The high cost of insurance means that many of those left out, will be unable to access regular health care.\u00a0\u00a0That also has a very real \u201cprice\u201d, a \u201cbutcher\u2019s bill\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Yale\u2019s school of Public Health estimates at least 1500 deaths, and possibly as many as 50,000 (Yale<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it should be no surprise that the world is turning away from America.\u00a0\u00a0Not only has Trump wrecked the world economy (price per gallon of gas in Germany $8.75, in the United Kingdom $8.10, Norway $10.37) with his \u201cwar of choice\u201d in the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0He has turned a blind eye turned to our ally Israel\u2019s actions there, and demonstrates his willingness to continue the \u201cButcher\u2019s Bill\u201d regardless of the price.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t believe, at least, I don\u2019t want to believe, that these outcomes were the conscious choice of most America voters, even those who chose to give our fate to Donald Trump and his cohorts one more time.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t believe they were willing to accept the \u201cbutcher\u2019s bill\u201d now presented, already paid in other\u2019s blood.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
