Sexts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t get \u201csexting\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not that I\u2019m against sex, that\u2019s all well and good.\u00a0\u00a0But \u201cremote sex\u201d just seems like a weird thing, especially in today\u2019s age where anything placed \u201cout there\u201d is ultimately available to all.\u00a0\u00a0Just like these essays:\u00a0\u00a0if it goes \u201cout\u201d on the internet or the airwaves, it becomes a public record.\u00a0\u00a0So if you don\u2019t want some \u201cthings\u201d made public, then don\u2019t put them in a place they could be \u201caired out\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Or, maybe I\u2019m just too old to get the sexual thrill of risking your privates possibly appearing in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, it\u2019s also not my job to govern the semi-private actions of consenting adults.\u00a0\u00a0So if they (adults) want to send or receive explicit texts, pictures, or videos; it\u2019s not for me to judge.\u00a0\u00a0And if, for example, a man cheats on his wife by sexting with another woman; well, it’s disreputable, but it\u2019s not illegal.\u00a0\u00a0The question in Maine, is should it be disqualifying for the Democratic candidate for Senate, Graham Platner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story goes like this.\u00a0\u00a0Platner sent \u201csexts\u201d to women other than his wife.\u00a0\u00a0He and his wife dealt with this form of infidelity, including marriage counseling.\u00a0\u00a0None of the recipients of those \u201csexts\u201d have come forward to complain.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, the only reason the world knows about any of this is that Platner\u2019s wife came forward to the campaign staff, warning them of this impending risk to his political future.\u00a0\u00a0But again, what started as a private conversation ends up on the public record.\u00a0\u00a0This time, it was thanks to the\u00a0New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Democrats look back to 2018, the beginning of the first election cycle after the Presidency of Donald Trump.\u00a0\u00a0Senator Al Franken of Minnesota, a comedian by trade, was found to have questionable photographs taken a decade earlier.\u00a0\u00a0The pictures showed Franken on an aircraft, jokingly trying to touch the breasts of a female comedian asleep on the flight.\u00a0\u00a0They were juvenile, and stupid, and exactly the kind of humor that Franken\u2019s career was all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was at the same moment that Alabama was trying to decide whether to elect a Republican, Judge Roy Moore, with credible charges of child sex abuse, or Democrat Doug Jones.\u00a0\u00a0And the Party in Washington wanted to make a strong point to the \u201cME TOO\u201d movement and the good folks of Alabama, that Democrats were on the right side.\u00a0\u00a0The Senate Democrats, led by New York Senator Kristin Gillibrand, demanded Franken resign, and he ultimately did. (I wrote a couple essays about this during that time, Al Franken Did the Right Thing<\/a>, and, It\u2019s Not for Me to Say<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jones won. So in the short run, the strategy absolutely worked.\u00a0\u00a0And it put Democrats in the position of holding to a higher moral and behavioral standard for their candidates than the Republicans, led by the \u201cGrab them by the *****\u201d President.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Other Democratic candidates have fallen to that standard, most recently Congressman Eric Swalwell, poised to win the California Gubernatorial race.\u00a0\u00a0As much as Swalwell seemed like a \u201cgood guy\u201d, it turned out he was a sleaze, using his political position to gain sexual favors from much younger staff women.\u00a0\u00a0His withdrawal leaves today\u2019s primary choice for the top job up in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swalwell abused the power of his office to gain sexual gratification \u2013 in spite of his wife and family.\u00a0\u00a0He needed to go.\u00a0\u00a0Franken was in the wrong place, with the wrong pictures, at the wrong time.\u00a0\u00a0At that moment, he needed to go too, but that standard may have been too high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So what about Grant Platner?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s a \u201crough\u201d candidate.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201csexts\u201d aren\u2019t his only problem.\u00a0\u00a0But, the former oyster farmer and Marine has caught on in Maine, and he has created a stark contrast to the Republican incumbent, Susan Collins.\u00a0\u00a0Maine Democrats had the opportunity to pick a more \u201cmainstream\u201d candidate, Governor Janet Mills.\u00a0\u00a0But they did not \u2013 they chose Platner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platner\u2019s wife wasn\u2019t \u201couting\u201d the \u201csexts\u201d to the public. She was trying to further his candidacy by warning the staff.\u00a0\u00a0And, most importantly, no one is saying that they received the \u201csexts\u201d unwillingly.\u00a0\u00a0Other than showing the bad judgment of \u201csexting\u201d (in my opinion), is their even a \u201cfoul\u201d here?\u00a0\u00a0Where should the Democratic line be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In His Pocket<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Republicans are going to call any Democratic candidate everything.\u00a0\u00a0Ask Sherrod Brown here in Ohio, whose last campaign was defeated by bogus charges that Brown supported \u201cmen in women\u2019s sports\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And look at Texas, where impeached, indicted, and adultering Republican Senatorial candidate Ken Paxton claims that Democratic candidate James Talarico is gay, or trans, or, worse of all, a vegan (he\u2019s none of the above).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democrats need to take a breath, swallow hard, and hope Platner doesn\u2019t have too many more skeletons in the closet.\u00a0\u00a0Because, the voters of Maine have decided that he is the best chance to oust Collins, and perhaps gain control of the Senate.\u00a0\u00a0If Dems decide that the voters are wrong, and abandon Platner, that message would most assuredly re-elect Maine’s current \u201cgreat vacillator\u201d to return to support Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
