{"id":8619,"date":"2026-05-15T10:23:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8619"},"modified":"2026-05-15T10:23:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:23:32","slug":"who-tells-your-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/05\/15\/who-tells-your-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Tells Your Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(One of the recurring themes of our times, Lin Manuel Miranda\u2019s Hamilton, the Musical)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Narrative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you enjoyed\u00a0<em>Hamilton the Musical,\u00a0<\/em>you must remember the dramatic ending.\u00a0\u00a0Hamilton is shot by then Vice President Aaron Burr.\u00a0\u00a0His wife, Eliza, always wanted to be part of his \u201cnarrative\u201d (except for when Hamilton revealed his affair with Maria Reynold\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0Then she wanted her story to \u201cBurn\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0But in 1804, Hamilton was dead.\u00a0\u00a0Eliza would live for another fifty years, and write her own narrative.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0\u00a0concluding song of the musical is called \u201cWho Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Eliza emphasizes that she was granted \u201ctime\u201d to secure Hamilton\u2019s legacy as a Founding Father, and to make her own mark on the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towards the end of her life, after many personal and civic accomplishments, she joined with former First Ladies Dolly Madison (James) and Louisa Adams (John Quincy) to raise money to build the Washington Monument, in honor of Hamilton\u2019s mentor, the First President.\u00a0\u00a0This was over forty years after Washington\u2019s death. The actual obelisk wasn\u2019t completed and opened to the public until 1888.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, the United States Congress built the Capitol building, with a vault for Washington\u2019s body to be interred.\u00a0\u00a0But the Washington family already had a vault for him and his wife Martha at his beloved home Mt. Vernon, and refused to have his remains moved.\u00a0\u00a0The room in the Capitol become a storage area for the \u201cnational\u201d funeral bier.\u00a0\u00a0So the Washington Monument, was the first \u201cNational\u201d construction to the Founding Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wait for It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865.\u00a0\u00a0A private \u201cmemorial\u201d was erected in front of the Washington City Hall a couple of years later, and Congress considered building a monument to Lincoln at that time.\u00a0\u00a0But it wasn\u2019t until 1910, forty-five years later, that the actual Congressional Commission to build the Lincoln Memorial met.\u00a0\u00a0Robert Lincoln, the President\u2019s son and himself a former Cabinet member and ambassador, was seventy-eight at the opening ceremony in 1922.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jefferson Memorial was opened in 1943 over a century after Jefferson died.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cnewer\u201d monuments followed the same pattern.\u00a0\u00a0The FDR Memorial opened in 1997, fifty years after his death. And the Martin Luther King monument was dedicated in 2011, fifty-three years after the assassination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monuments, as Eliza Hamilton sang, tell our story.\u00a0\u00a0They help define our legacy, what history we consider.\u00a0\u00a0Washington\u2019s monument, an Egyptian-like enigma, not only represents the power of Washington\u2019s Masonic connections, but also, like the man, \u201cstands off\u201d from the rest of the statuary.\u00a0\u00a0There is no face of Washington, no Greek god-like depiction.\u00a0\u00a0(There was such a statue, commissioned by Congress.\u00a0\u00a0But it was jokingly called \u201cWashington waiting for his clothes\u201d, as the half-nude leader sits with his hand raised.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s now located in the museum of American History).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"203\" height=\"248\" data-attachment-id=\"8617\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/washington\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Washington.jpeg?fit=203%2C248&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"203,248\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"Washington\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Washington.jpeg?fit=203%2C248&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Washington.jpeg?resize=203%2C248&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8617\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Running Out of Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donald Trump is a man running out of time.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not just that his second term of office will end in January of 2029, but Trump himself is showing the sure signs of old age.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019ll be eighty next month. And Trump isn\u2019t waiting for his descendants to build him monuments.\u00a0\u00a0He doing it himself, \u201cspeeding up\u201d time so that he might see (and revel in) the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is well aware of the concept of \u201cwho tells the story\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He wants to make sure that he controls the narrative.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not just that his Administration is busy \u201cscrubbing\u201d American history, removing inconvenient truths (thanks, Al Gore) like discrimination and prejudice and the January 6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Insurrection from the \u201cnarrative\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Trump wants his monuments, now, so he can see for himself how America will celebrate his ascendancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a list:\u00a0\u00a0the ballroom, built in contravention of all the historic building codes in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s the planned Triumphal Arch, to be built to overshadow both Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial.\u00a0\u00a0Trump wants his signature on American money, and his face on US Passports.\u00a0\u00a0And there\u2019s the \u201cnew and better\u201d reflecting pool, soon to be \u201cswimming pool blue\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Branding America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has always wanted monuments.\u00a0\u00a0His \u201cbranding\u201d has often proved to be more lucrative than actual Trump ownership.\u00a0\u00a0And he\u2019s determined to place his \u201cbrand\u201d on Washington, DC, and Trump Airport in Palm Beach, the Trump Interstate from Texas to Montana, and the \u201cTrump Class\u201d new battleships, part of the \u201cGolden Fleet\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So don\u2019t be so surprised that Trump wants his \u201cmonuments\u201d now, instead of fifty years or more after his death.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not just a matter of personal satisfaction; it\u2019s a way to write his story in stone, much more difficult to edit than the Wikipedia version.\u00a0\u00a0At eighty years-old, he is running out of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he wants to tell his own story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(One of the recurring themes of our times, Lin Manuel Miranda\u2019s Hamilton, the Musical) The Narrative If you enjoyed\u00a0Hamilton the Musical,\u00a0you must remember the dramatic ending.\u00a0\u00a0Hamilton is shot by then Vice President Aaron Burr.\u00a0\u00a0His wife, Eliza, always wanted to be part of his \u201cnarrative\u201d (except for when Hamilton revealed his affair with Maria Reynold\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0Then she &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/05\/15\/who-tells-your-story\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Who Tells Your Story&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"Donald Trump wants to control the \"narrative\".
