{"id":8596,"date":"2026-05-06T10:11:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8596"},"modified":"2026-05-06T10:11:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:11:30","slug":"truly-be-our-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/05\/06\/truly-be-our-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Truly Be Our Own"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c\u2026here on earth God&#8217;s work must truly be our own.\u201d \u2013 John F Kennedy\u2019s Inaugural Address<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ohio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Yesterday was primary day in both Ohio and Indiana.\u00a0\u00a0Here in Ohio, the table was set for two momentous battles this fall.\u00a0\u00a0Since 2016, Ohio has been a typical \u201cRed\u201d state, giving secure majorities to Donald Trump each time his name appeared on the ballot.\u00a0\u00a0But in 2018 and in 2023, there were glimmers of Democratic hope.\u00a0\u00a0In 2018 Democrat Sherrod Brown defended his Senate seat.\u00a0\u00a0And in 2023, 57% of Ohioans voted for the Abortion Rights Amendment to the state Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump was not on the ballot in either of those elections.\u00a0\u00a0In 2024, Brown was defeated by Columbian born, MAGA loyalist Bernie Moreno, washed away in a Trump 11% victory in the state over Kamala Harris.\u00a0\u00a0And Ohio remains \u201cRed\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0all but one of the statewide elected officials in the state are Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tickets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s not on the ballot in 2026 either.\u00a0\u00a0Brown is now running for the Senate seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance.\u00a0\u00a0His opponent is appointed Senator and former Lieutenant Governor John Husted.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s expected that it will be one of the most expensive races in the Nation, and key to whether Democrats might gain control of the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in the Gubernatorial race, the field is set as well.\u00a0\u00a0The Republican Party made sure that Trump supported billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy had an uncontested path to the nomination.\u00a0\u00a0And Democrats, after the usual early waffling, fell in behind former State Director of Health Amy Acton.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baggage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both candidates carry some of what many would consider \u201cbaggage\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Ramaswamy was born in Cincinnati of immigrant Indian parents.\u00a0\u00a0Nether were US citizens at the time.\u00a0\u00a0It will be interesting to see whether the Party standing against \u201cbirthright citizenship\u201d will rally behind a \u201cbirthright\u201d citizen.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, there\u2019s the undercurrent of whether a man of Indian ancestry can appeal to MAGA voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acton was the non-partisan Ohio Director of Health, appointed by Republican Governor Mike DeWine, during the beginning of the Covid Pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0She became \u201cthe face\u201d of Ohio\u2019s response:\u00a0\u00a0masking, school closures, and social distancing.\u00a0\u00a0DeWine stood with her until the Republican dominated State Legislature threatened to remove his emergency powers.\u00a0\u00a0Then he folded, and allowed her to resign to \u201ctake the heat\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has returned as a strong Democratic candidate, but the commercials are already running tying her to DeWine\u2019s early Covid emergency actions.\u00a0\u00a0The divisions of Covid; masking, closures, and \u201cessential workers\u201d, cut directly along party lines.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, Ramaswamy is already spending millions of his own money.\u00a0\u00a0Acton is out raising him in public, but that makes little difference to a billionaire with his own ample checkbook.  And finally, Ohio has never elected a woman as Governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Democrats in Ohio, hope springs eternal.\u00a0\u00a0The fact that both the abortion and a marijuana legalization law were passed by citizen referenda demonstrates that the state is not so \u201cMAGA\u201d as the elective offices and gerrymandering would show.\u00a0\u00a0The general election results will come to down one simple thing:\u00a0\u00a0turnout.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost of gas, food, and goods; the human rights violations of ICE, and the incredible flood of money moving from everyday folks to the rich, might be enough to drive Democrat supporting voters to the polls.\u00a0\u00a0And neither Ramaswamy or Husted are likely to have a \u201cTrump effect\u201d on MAGA voter turnout.\u00a0\u00a0So, there\u2019s hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But yesterday\u2019s results in Indiana tell a different tale.\u00a0\u00a0Trump ordered Republican state legislatures nationwide to re-district their state maps, maximizing Republican Congressional seats for the 2026 election. Many states have a proud tradition of only redistricting after the ten year census is released (some like Florida, have that codified in the state Constitution).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Indiana\u2019s Republican Senate stood up to Trump\u2019s pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like some mob boss in a bad gangster movie, Trump ordered political \u201chits\u201d on those that stood in his way.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201chit\u201d was delivered last night, as five of the seven Senators who stood against\u00a0\u00a0Indiana gerrymandering were \u201cprimaried\u201d by MAGA candidates backed by Trump\u2019s war chest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump still controls MAGA.\u00a0\u00a0And MAGA still controls the Republican Party system.\u00a0\u00a0In spite of all of the \u201cbad news on the doorstep\u201d, from Iran to local gas prices; they still put on their red hats and do his bidding.\u00a0\u00a0And Republican politicians interested in survival continue to fall in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Own<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats cannot depend on Republicans to \u201ccome to their senses\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The voice of folks like Adam Kinzinger and Michael Steele, reasonable voices that sound like \u201cyour father\u2019s Republican Party\u201d, don\u2019t count.\u00a0\u00a0They are out, and while their advice is often sound, they have no resonance in the MAGA world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To change America, citizens must stand against MAGA: Democrats, Progressives, Independents, and even those few \u201cold\u201d Republicans who cannot stomach the Trump world.\u00a0\u00a0We cannot wait for the Republicans to \u201cwake up\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0To paraphrase President Kennedy, the work to save the Nation, must truly be our own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c\u2026here on earth God&#8217;s work must truly be our own.\u201d \u2013 John F Kennedy\u2019s Inaugural Address Ohio \u00a0Yesterday was primary day in both Ohio and Indiana.\u00a0\u00a0Here in Ohio, the table was set for two momentous battles this fall.\u00a0\u00a0Since 2016, Ohio has been a typical \u201cRed\u201d state, giving secure majorities to Donald Trump each time his &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/05\/06\/truly-be-our-own\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Truly Be Our Own&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8596","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
