Grand Fenwick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a book written in the mid-1950\u2019s called\u00a0The Mouse that Roared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>It was required reading in my nuclear strategies class of the 1970\u2019s, as we students at Denison University weighed the issues of thermonuclear mass destruction.\u00a0\u00a0The premise was simple.\u00a0\u00a0A mythical country located in the Alps between France and Switzerland, was called the Duchy of Grand Fenwick.\u00a0\u00a0Fenwick remained a medieval nation, with their proud military armed with bows and arrows.\u00a0\u00a0The one product that Fenwick produced was a single wine, the Pinot Grand Fenwick.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a California vineyard produced a \u201cknock-off\u201d variety of Pinot Grand Fenwick, and the country was threatened with bankruptcy.\u00a0\u00a0Their only chance of continued existence:\u00a0\u00a0declare war on the United States, lose, and then depend on American largess (like the post War World II Marshall Plan) to reinvigorate their economy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A declaration of war was sent to the United States. But the note got misplaced in the State Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Duchy is ignored, and realized that they must actually invade the United States.\u00a0\u00a0So they send a \u201cforce\u201d to attack New York City.\u00a0\u00a0Led by a \u201cField Marshal\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It consists of him, three \u201cmen-at-arms\u201d (think medieval knights), and twenty bowmen.\u00a0\u00a0They land in the City at a time that the entire town is below ground for a civil defense drill, and march\u00a0\u00a0(unintentionally) through the empty streets to a top secret laboratory.\u00a0\u00a0There they capture the ultimate weapon, the \u201cQ\u201d Bomb, accidently making the Duchy of Grand Fenwick the most powerful nation in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Field Marshal takes the \u201cQ Bomb\u201d back to Fenwick, and leverages the world to control all nuclear weapons.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a great story, and film with Peter Sellers (the Pink Panther) in the lead role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s Q Bomb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The United States is the most powerful military in the world.\u00a0\u00a0But, we discovered in Vietnam and Afghanistan, that power still has limits.\u00a0\u00a0Those limitations are; what we are willing to do, and, what is the opposing nation willing to take.\u00a0\u00a0It seems we have found those limits once again in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure we still have nuclear weapons.\u00a0\u00a0When the President threatens to end \u201cPersian Civilization\u201d, there is the implicit message that we would use them.\u00a0\u00a0Writer Tom Nichols in the\u00a0Atlantic<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>suggests that Trump seriously considered it.\u00a0\u00a0But realistically, the United States would be a world pariah if we used our nuclear weapons for anything but the ultimate National defense.\u00a0\u00a0In his article, Nichols demanded that the military resist any attempt. Nichols wrote, \u201c\u2026 They should lay their stars on his desk,\u201d rather than launch a nuclear strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, assuming that we aren\u2019t \u201cthinking the unthinkable\u201d, it seems that Iran is able to absorb the worst the United States can do, and still remain standing.\u00a0\u00a0On the other hand, Iran\u2019s ability to deny the world use of the Strait of Hormuz (or Vermouth, as Treasury Secretary Bessent calls it) is the ultimate non-nuclear \u201cTrump\u201d card.\u00a0\u00a0The Strait is their \u201cQ Bomb\u201d, placing a militarily weak nation in control of the world.\u00a0\u00a0Twenty percent of the world\u2019s oil will do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weak Side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ultimate failure of the Trump Administration is that they \u201cmissed\u201d this possibility.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps it was hubris from the \u201cshock and awe\u201d of the Venezuela kidnapping operation, or perhaps it was the amazing sales ability of Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Netanyahu in the White House situation room (NYT<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Either way, the \u201cdecapitation campaign\u201d at the beginning of the war, killed off the leadership, but failed to account for their replacements being even more extreme.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cregime change\u201d of an uprising by the Iranian intellectual class failed, because they were forced to choose between the leaders they hated, and two nations waging total warfare against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there is that twenty-four mile wide \u201caorta\u201d of the world\u2019s economy.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not the Iranian Navy (unless speedboats count).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s mines, it\u2019s shoulder launched missiles, it\u2019s mobile drones, it\u2019s even targeted missiles. None of them were\u00a0\u00a0accurately accounted for in the \u201cbattle plans\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the Iranian \u201cQ Bomb\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now, the United States is the \u201cside\u201d that needs to negotiate a peace.\u00a0\u00a0With all of the military inequities, Iran holds the upper hand at the table in Pakistan.\u00a0\u00a0Americans \u201cneed\u201d them to show up.\u00a0\u00a0And Iran is willing to \u201cpay the price\u201d if they chose not to. The United States is sending the man who holds the second most powerful office in the Nation.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s to negotiate with the third and fourth level guys who are the ones left alive to talk.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s \u201cQ Bomb\u201d puts them in control.\u00a0\u00a0And it makes Trump look weak, in the eyes of the world, and the American people.\u00a0\u00a0Peter Sellers would be the one to play him in the new, modern version of the Mouse that Roared.\u00a0\u00a0Only he could make the absurdity of this American White House make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
