the kiss of death<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It was soon after, that Fredo went fishing on Lake Tahoe, and Michael\u2019s bodyguard put a bullet in the back of his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\nA lot of what the Trump Administration does looks like \u201corganized crime\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They act outside the laws, and they enrich themselves at every turn in American policies and politics.\u00a0\u00a0They sell pardons to the highest bidders, and take \u201cgifts\u201d both from American corporations and foreign entities.\u00a0\u00a0And Trump definitely styles himself as the \u201cGodfather\u201d of MAGA\u2019ism.\u00a0\u00a0He tells \u201chis voters\u201d who to vote for, and who to reject.\u00a0\u00a0Part of Trump\u2019s absolute power over the Republican Party is his death grip on the perhaps 30% of voting Republicans, where Trump\u2019s word is law.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump\u2019s Influence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
But as we move into the 2026 election cycle, when all of the House of Representatives and a third of the US Senate are up for election,\u00a0\u00a0Trump\u2019s backing seems to be more of an unintentional \u201cil bacio della morte\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Sure, Trump\u2019s endorsement is still necessary to win a Republican party nomination.\u00a0\u00a0But in head to head elections Democratic candidates or propositions are winning, or dramatically cutting into the past Trump margins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And now we\u2019ve even seen it on the international stage.\u00a0\u00a0Viktor Orban, the authoritarian leader of Hungary, lost his legislative majority in the Hungarian National Assembly Sunday.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, the Assembly went from a majority\u00a0\u00a0of 133 seats favoring Orban (out of 199), to a super-majority of 138 seats opposing him.\u00a0\u00a0Orban charted an authoritarian course for Hungary since he gained power in 2010.\u00a0\u00a0Hungary became a thorn in the side to both the European Union and NATO (Hungary is a member of both).\u00a0\u00a0He stood in opposition to sending aid to Ukraine. And he became a supporter of Europe\u2019s premier authoritarian leader,\u00a0\u00a0Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Orban’s Demise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Orban found a huge support network among American right-wing groups, including the Heritage Foundation and many in the Republican Party.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He appeared at CPAC (the Conservative Political Action Conference) and even created a CPAC of his own in Hungary.\u00a0\u00a0And Orban was a fellow proponent of Christian Nationalism. In fact, some of Trump\u2019s actions towards those he calls \u201cwoke\u201d, like major educational institutions, are straight from Orban\u2019s playbook.\u00a0\u00a0(Compare what Trump is doing to the Ivy League Schools, and what Orban did to Hungary\u2019s Central European University).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the Hungarian election grew closer, both President Trump and Vice President Vance tried to help Orban maintain power.\u00a0\u00a0Vance actually went to campaign rallies for Orban in Hungary, and Trump called into the partisan Hungarian crowd, telling them they needed to make sure Orban stayed in office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like many Republican candidates here in the United States, Trump\u2019s approval seems to be the \u201cil bacio della morte\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Here in the US the issues are clear:\u00a0\u00a0ICE illegalities, hikes in consumer prices due to tariffs, cuts in health care, and foreign adventurism in the attack on Venezuela and the War in Iran.\u00a0\u00a0What in Biden\u2019s day was \u201cthe price of eggs\u201d, now is reborn as \u201cthe price of gas\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The people of Hungary know what\u2019s going on here, and also recognize the danger that Trump, and Orban, represents to their future.\u00a0\u00a0Vance and Trump\u2019s support were\u00a0\u00a0the \u201ckiss of death\u201d for Orban\u2019s candidacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fish Heads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Hungary choses its chief executive through a Parliamentary system.\u00a0\u00a0The party with the majority in the Assembly chooses the Prime Minister.\u00a0\u00a0So it\u2019s easier for them to change the executive than the locked-in four year Presidency of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0But folks here in the United States can still take some heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If Democrats take control of the Congress, Trump may be impeached again by the House of Representatives. (The prediction markets\u00a0\u00a0are at 71%).\u00a0\u00a0But it is more than unlikely (the markets at 27%) that the Senate could reach the two-thirds threshold to convict.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But what a Democratic House and Senate could do is to block some of Trump\u2019s most outrageous actions.\u00a0\u00a0And they\u2019d have to the power to investigate and subpoena, laying out the corruption that seems endemic to the current Administration.\u00a0\u00a0To use another Italian expression \u201cil pesce puzza della testa\u201d; the fish rots from the head.\u00a0\u00a0A Democratic Congress will make it their business to expose that rot to the American people, particularly as we near the 2028 Presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking of elections:\u00a0\u00a0the best way to safeguard a free and fair election in 2026 and 2028, is to protect the states from federal incursion into election processes.\u00a0\u00a0Since the Trump Administration is convinced that our electoral system is \u201crigged\u201d, that\u2019s going to be the tough fight to win.\u00a0\u00a0A Democratic Congress would help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Give Viktor Orban credit:\u00a0\u00a0he recognized a legal election loss, and conceded to his opponent.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s something that the current head of the United States government has never done.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
