{"id":8529,"date":"2026-04-09T07:56:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T11:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8529"},"modified":"2026-04-09T07:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T11:56:20","slug":"so-dumb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/04\/09\/so-dumb\/","title":{"rendered":"So Dumb"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember a Mel Brooks movie of my youth,\u00a0<em>Blazing Saddles.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0It was an irreverent parody of the cowboy movies (think John Wayne) that filled the screen in those days, and it was funny as Hell.\u00a0\u00a0(<em>The movie is completely\/totally\/absolutely, politically incorrect for the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Century. It was pretty incorrect back in the 1970&#8217;s too. To watch it, turn off your \u201cWoke Meter\u201d, and accept it as the period piece it is<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Badges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead actor was Cleavon Little.\u00a0\u00a0He played \u201cBart\u201d,\u00a0\u00a0a black man, chosen by the Governor (Mel Brooks) to save the little prairie town of Rock Ridge.\u00a0\u00a0The town was under siege by the criminal forces of a rich railroad executive Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman).\u00a0\u00a0The corrupt Governor counts on the racist town people, unwilling to accept a black sheriff, to create the chaos necessary for Lamarr to overrun the place.\u00a0\u00a0What he didn\u2019t expect was the new sheriff&#8217;s friendship with \u201cJim\u201d, played by Gene Wilder, an alcoholic ex-gunslinger who is unable to hold his gun hand steady enough to shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go watch the movie if you want to know what happens, or how NFL Hall of Famer Alex Karras knocks a horse out with one punch.\u00a0\u00a0Or to hear the tagline that outlives the plot of the movie itself:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e1lyNt5km8U\">Badges?\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t need no stinkin\u2019 badges!!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one scene reminds me of our current political world.  Bart faces a mob of the folk of Rock Ridge, ready to lynch him rather than have a black sheriff.\u00a0\u00a0In an instant, Bart takes himself hostage, pointing a gun at his own neck and saying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a8yZKMow0ME\">I\u2019ll shoot the \u2013\u00a0<em>black sheriff<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; <em>he uses  a term than I will not in 2026<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Bart them reverses his voice, and pleads with the crowd to not make \u201chim\u201d shoot \u201cme\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He carries this charade on long enough to get into the sheriff\u2019s office door.\u00a0\u00a0Bart then says: \u201cOh baby, you are so talented\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He then looks directly into the camera and adds: \u201cAnd they are so dumb!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this because of the world brinksmanship that we lived through the past few days.\u00a0\u00a0Donald Trump threatened the very existence of the Iranian\/Persian culture. He made it clear it was his plan blow up their entire civil infra-structure in a massive four-hour bombing raid.\u00a0\u00a0Trump, operating without support of Congress, or NATO, or the American people, determined to bomb Iran \u201cback to the Stone Age\u201d (his words).\u00a0\u00a0And it would all start at 8:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, March 7<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was all a matter of degree.&nbsp;&nbsp;Trump already took America to war against Iran, launching a devastating bombing campaign along with the Israeli government.&nbsp;&nbsp;The first episode took place last June, when B-2 Bombers were sent with enormous multi-million dollar bombs to destroy Iran\u2019s buried nuclear research facilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;According to Trump, their nuclear development program was obliterated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, if th<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-war.html\">e&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;is accurate, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu convinced Trump to join him in an all-out assault on the Iranian leadership, a \u201cdecapitation strike\u201d that began our current conflict on February 28<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;The reasons:&nbsp;&nbsp;the nuclear program might not be as \u201cobliterated\u201d as Trump thought.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, in concert with civil unrest within Iran, perhaps a new government might gain power.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the American Secretary of Defense crowed daily about the successes of US arms against Iran, somehow the new theocratic leadership managed to launch successful missile and drone strikes against American bases and our other allies in the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0\u00a0Iranian Air Force was destroyed, their Navy on the bottom of the Persian Gulf\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But still Iranian missiles and drones continued to find targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By the Barrels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Iran played its ultimate \u201c trump card\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They choked off the Strait of Hormuz, denying the rest of the world 20% of oil production.\u00a0\u00a0Costs for petroleum products worldwide sky-rocketed as the price per barrel went from $72 to $115.\u00a0\u00a0America\u2019s gas prices  topped $4.00 a gallon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The US might be able to destroy targets at will, but Iran had the world by the \u201cbarrels\u201d, and there was little the vast armed might of the United States could do about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American allies, from Western Europe to the Pacific rim, demanded that the Straits be reopened.\u00a0\u00a0They weren\u2019t interested in participating in the United States\u2019 \u201cwar of choice\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But they did not want the world thrown into economic chaos due to the lack of oil.\u00a0\u00a0Trump also faced internal political opposition, with dwindling support for his&#8221;excursion\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Recent polling showed 57% of Americans opposed to the war, with only 34% strongly or somewhat for it (<a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/54484-us-war-with-iran-remains-unpopular-april-3-6-2026-economist-yougov-poll\">YouGov<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came Trump&#8217;s ultimatum, the threat of massive destruction against a nation of 90 million people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Iranian government at the last moment issued a potential peace deal, and asked for a two week ceasefire.\u00a0\u00a0Trump accepted, and negotiations are ongoing in Pakistan.\u00a0\u00a0Trump supporters would have us think that he was holding the gun on his hostage Iran, who capitulated to his dire threats.\u00a0\u00a0And maybe that\u2019s true:\u00a0\u00a0maybe Iran realized that the President was willing to commit whatever war crimes were required to loosen Iran\u2019s grip on the world\u2019s barrels.\u00a0\u00a0The first rule of dealing with a crazy man \u2013 realize that he\u2019s crazy.\u00a0\u00a0To be clear, I mean the President, not the Ayatollah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">North Korean Tactics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or maybe Donald Trump took the American people and our European allies, and pointed the gun at our own collective neck.\u00a0\u00a0Trump would send our kids to war.\u00a0 (<em>By the way, why did the question of 18 year olds registering for the draft come up this week?)<\/em>\u00a0He\u2019ll risk World War III (something Trump himself accused Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelenskyy of doing).\u00a0\u00a0The United States will bomb and destroy, untethered by the Geneva Conventions or the \u201crules of engagement\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Trump would even risk the Straits of Hormuz remaining closed, and world economic collapse, all to get a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was he crazy?\u00a0\u00a0Was he really willing to risk all to get what he wanted?\u00a0Did Trump\u00a0do this as a strategy, the Kim Jong Un method of political brinksmanship?\u00a0\u00a0Or, was Trump actually planning to throw the whole world into chaos, in order to gain a \u201cvictory\u201d from the Iranians?\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll shoot the Western world, I\u2019ll do it!!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cPlease, please don\u2019t make him shoot me!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there\u2019s a two-week ceasefire.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s possible language for re-opening the Straits.
