No Kings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday was the latest in the \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies.\u00a0\u00a0If the gauge is the \u201cbody count\u201d, the number of people who participate nationwide, then it was an unmitigated success.\u00a0\u00a0Over eight million people came out to protest in over 3000 separate events throughout the United States, and even internationally (CBS<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the second largest mass protest in American history. (The first was the very first Earth Day, where an estimated 20 million stood up for the environment).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does \u201cNo Kings\u201d want?\u00a0\u00a0First of all \u201cNo Kings\u201d is only one part of the vast agglomeration of organizations that helped organize yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0Some are\u00a0\u00a0 issues oriented:\u00a0\u00a0Indivisible, Alt National Park, 50501, the ACLU, Move On, Planned Parenthood, and the Human Rights Campaign.\u00a0\u00a0Others are more familiar to the political world:\u00a0\u00a0labor unions like the AFL-CIO, the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Service Employees International Union, and various parts of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peaceably Assemble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Essentially, \u201cNo Kings\u201d is against the Trump Administration on almost every level.\u00a0\u00a0The protests are a clear exercise of First Amendment rights:\u00a0\u00a0the right to gather together to criticize our own government, publicly and loudly.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNo Kings\u201d isn\u2019t calling for a revolution, it\u2019s calling for an end to the most heinous of the Trump policies on immigration, waging foreign wars, and the fraud and corruption so apparent in his Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, and then there\u2019s the whole Epstein thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there\u2019s not a revolution, an immediate physical overturn of the government, than what\u2019s the point?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019d call it \u201cfair warning\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0If millions go to the streets to protest, then how many more millions will go to the polls in November?\u00a0\u00a0The first move to defend the rights of Americans is to \u201cshow up\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cNo Kings\u201d marches are telling Americans to do just that.\u00a0\u00a0Millions are showed up yesterday; many, many more millions will show up to vote in November and change America\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heart of it All<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As I noted in an earlier essay, I had surgery (nothing life threatening) a few weeks ago.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m getting near the end of my \u201crecovery\u201d period (about another week or so to go, I hope).\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m sure marching around the Court House square in Newark, Ohio isn\u2019t supposed to be my fifteen minutes of walking, three times a day, and I\u2019m really not ready for duty at a track meet, yet.\u00a0\u00a0But we (Jenn and I) want to be a part of the \u201cbody count”, two of the millions who\u00a0\u00a0voiced their concern.\u00a0\u00a0So we went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We chose the city of Newark, in the \u201cHeart of it All\u201d here in Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the seat of Licking County. Donald Trump won our county by over 64% in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0But there might still be some hope for Licking: in 2023 when the right of women to choose abortion was on the ballot, the county narrowly voted\u00a0in favor\u00a0<\/strong>of the amendment (now law in the State Constitution) protecting choice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And practically, Newark is an \u201ceasy\u201d rally, just in case my \u201crecovery\u201d isn\u2019t as complete as I think it is.\u00a0\u00a0Worse comes to worse, Jenn and I could drive around the Square, honking and giving the \u201cthumbs\u2019 up\u201d sign to the protestors gathered there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Court House Square<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we arrived, the crowd of several hundred were already at the Court House steps.\u00a0\u00a0It was a jovial affair.\u00a0\u00a0Participants were as interested in the signs handmade by others, as they were in the speakers.\u00a0\u00a0Various leaders gave speeches, but we all already knew what the message was.\u00a0\u00a0Trump is a threat to our Constitutional Republic, our democratic form of government.\u00a0\u00a0His actions, from ICE to the Justice Department\u2019s \u201cretributions\u201d to unilaterally going to war against Iran, all are the acts of a \u201csovereign\u201d dictator.\u00a0\u00a0The United States is founded on a series of principles, and one of the foremost of those is simple: No Kings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were few hecklers:\u00a0\u00a0a couple of guys stereotyping themselves in the American flag baseball hats, Carhartt- tan coats and \u201cTrump 2024\u201d flags. (Full disclosure, I use a Carhartt rain suit for track meets).<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0They tried to disrupt the speakers with a bullhorn, and marched side-by-side around the edge of the crowd.\u00a0\u00a0But when they tried to \u201cstart something\u201d by yelling, the crowd shouted them down.\u00a0\u00a0Really, it\u2019s Newark, Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s kind of surprising there weren\u2019t more \u201ccounter-protests\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The rally participants took their actions in stride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The single-most important rule of the No Kings marches and rallies:\u00a0\u00a0don\u2019t \u201cgive cause\u201d for reaction.\u00a0\u00a0The headline must be \u201cpeaceful protest\u201d, not \u201criot in the streets\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And while there were a few incidents nationwide (not in Newark), the absolute peacefully, and even joy in unity, of the “No Kings” events is extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve had a lot of (positive) involvement with Licking County law enforcement over the years, and they didn\u2019t disappoint at the rally.\u00a0There were a couple of sheriffs cruisers around, but in general, the police were low key.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m sure they were there:\u00a0\u00a0after all, the rally was at the County Court House.\u00a0\u00a0But they stayed out of sight, out of \u201ctarget\u201d access to protestors and hecklers alike.\u00a0\u00a0They let the First Amendment right to free speech, petition for redress of grievances and assembly play out, peacefully, on the Court House square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who was there?\u00a0\u00a0Lots of folks my age, the retirement-set anxious to bring our country back from the brink of authoritarianism.\u00a0\u00a0Young people, some wearing tie-dye in homage to the 1960\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0Veterans, wearing their baseball hats with ships and regions of service.\u00a0\u00a0And couples with children, teaching a lesson in involvement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rallied on the Court House steps.\u00a0\u00a0We marched around the Court House square.\u00a0\u00a0And we voiced our concerns, in signs, in songs, in speeches and in chants.\u00a0\u00a0But most of all we showed that we were the solution, ready to work for the America we love.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
