{"id":8488,"date":"2026-03-27T10:33:50","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T14:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8488"},"modified":"2026-03-27T10:33:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T14:33:52","slug":"busy-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/03\/27\/busy-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Busy Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>Yesterday was a busy day in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0The President let us know that Americans don\u2019t have to worry about oil \u2013 we have more than enough.\u00a0\u00a0And the Speaker of the House said in clear English said that Democrats can\u2019t win without \u201ccriminal, illegal immigrants\u201d voting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Pays?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As I write this essay, the price of oil is $110 per barrel.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s up 50% from before the US\/Israeli attacks on Iran.\u00a0\u00a0Americans are well aware of the cost of this military \u201cexcursion\u201d in the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0In January, the \u201cbefore time\u201d, regular gas at the pump average $2.67 here in Ohio (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=EMM_EPM0U_PTE_SOH_DPG&amp;f=W\">EIA<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Today here in beautiful Pataskala\u201d, gas is $3.97, mirroring the 50% increase in oil (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gasbuddy.com\/home?search=43062&amp;fuel=1&amp;method=all\">GasBuddy<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So when we talk about who pays the cost of Trump\u2019s adventurism, the answer isn\u2019t just you and me in tax money (this war is costing about $1 Billion a day &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/11\/cost-of-us-iran-war\/89082840007\/\">USA Today<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s also the increase in daily costs in our lives.\u00a0\u00a0And that\u2019s not just in gas costs. Ultimately, it  will cost more to do about anything:\u00a0\u00a0buy food, shop at Amazon, or any product that depends on transport.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Americans usually \u201cpitch in\u201d for shared sacrifice.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s what our parents\/grandparent did during World War II, and what we did after 9-11.\u00a0\u00a0We even started to do that during Covid, until politics overcame science, and wearing a mask became a symbol of ideology rather than health.\u00a0\u00a0But since the current Administration did little (nothing?) to prepare us for the current conflict, it\u2019s a lot harder to get behind it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drill Baby, Drill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But there is a question.\u00a0\u00a0America is the largest oil producer in the world (quoting Trump at Cabinet meeting on April 26<sup>th<\/sup>), and there\u2019s so much oil here that we don\u2019t need what\u2019s coming through the Strait of Hormuz. Then, why are our prices going up?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The simple answer is that there is not an American oil market, there\u2019s only a world oil market.\u00a0\u00a0Some American oil is exported; some oil used in the US is imported.  We are all tied to world supply and availability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s what some would call an \u201cunintended\u201d consequence of the swelling price of oil.&nbsp;&nbsp;Trump ran for office using a simple phrase to explain his oil strategies:&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cDrill Baby, Drill\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;And there are untapped resources in the America.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But, American oil producers won\u2019t drill in most of those places (like ANWAR \u2013 the wilderness area above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, or off-shore of California).&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s far too expensive, at least it was, in the \u201cbefore\u201d times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">US oil producers need gas near  five dollars a gallon nationally, to make this kind of extreme drilling worthwhile.\u00a0\u00a0It was  foreseeable that the United States would stop world oil transport in the Middle East.  Surprise, that gets prices where the oil producers need it.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, those prices have to stay up to maintain the base.\u00a0\u00a0But, with the undetermined US strategy in Iran, that might be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Who pays the cost for Iran?&nbsp;&nbsp;We, the People of the United States does.&nbsp;&nbsp;Who pays the cost to keep gas prices high enough and encourage the \u201coil guys\u201d to \u201cDrill Baby, Drill\u201d?&nbsp;&nbsp;We cover that too.&nbsp;&nbsp;And finally, who promised to help the oil industry in exchange $1 Billion in campaign finances?&nbsp;&nbsp;That would be Donald Trump (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/05\/09\/trump-asks-oil-executives-campaign-finance-00157131\">Politico<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fox News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s not often that I actually listen to&nbsp;<em>Fox News.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;I do read their \u201cnews\u201d app on my phone from time to time, but I think the last time I heard Fox anchor Brett Baier was when he interviewed then-Vice President Harris during the campaign.&nbsp;&nbsp;But I was driving, and tired of&nbsp;<em>MSNOW,&nbsp;<\/em>so I flipped over to see what\u2019s up on&nbsp;<em>Fox.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Baier was doing his show from the Speaker\u2019s balcony in the Capitol.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, of course, his lead interview was with the Speaker himself, Mike Johnson of Louisiana.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sometimes it\u2019s good the hear the other side.\u00a0\u00a0Johnson claimed that Democrats caused the TSA shutdowns and emergencies in US travel.\u00a0\u00a0He proudly boasted that the House voted several times to re-open TSA, and ignored Democratic Senators attempts to do the same.\u00a0\u00a0Even I agree:\u00a0\u00a0that\u2019s just politics.\u00a0\u00a0Most Americans know what the TSA controversy is all about, and what the \u201cdeal\u201d will be to end it.\u00a0It&#8217;s all about ICE and the illegal actions they\u2019ve been taking across the country.\u00a0\u00a0That will have to end:\u00a0\u00a0it\u2019s not a matter of outcome, it\u2019s a matter of how much time and suffering it will take to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criminal and Illegal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Then Mike Johnson moved to the \u201cSafe America Act\u201d, and made an outlandish claim as a statement of \u201cfact\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Johnson said this:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cDemocrats can\u2019t win elections without the help of \u201ccriminal, illegal immigrants\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I know that\u2019s the Republican talking point around the \u201cSafe Act\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But I didn\u2019t think the Speaker, second in line for the Presidency, would out-right and knowingly lie to America. (That makes me sound terribly na\u00efve).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Johnson doesn\u2019t have to look far to get the \u201creal\u201d story.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, it\u2019s all on the website of the Heritage Foundation, a central \u201cthink-tank\u201d of the MAGA and Republican world, the authors of &#8220;Project 2025&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0The Heritage website on election fraud is considered a solid source, unusual for Heritage.\u00a0\u00a0And here\u2019s what they say:\u00a0\u00a0since 1982, there have been 1620 cases of voter fraud.\u00a0\u00a0Over forty-four years, eleven Presidential elections, literally more than a billion votes cast, only 1620 cases, an average nationwide of 36 per year\u00a0\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/electionfraud.heritage.org\/search\">Heritage)<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheaters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No candidate or political party is \u201ccheating\u201d in elections to get elected.\u00a0\u00a0There are multiple levels of law enforcement to stop that.\u00a0\u00a0And, as Heritage points out, what cheating there is extremely limited.\u00a0\u00a0But Johnson knowingly follows propaganda rather than the facts.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, there\u2019s the other possibility.\u00a0\u00a0One mark of the Trump Administration is to attack an action which is really something they\u2019ve already done.\u00a0\u00a0Johnson may simply be playing his \u201crole\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We need leaders in Washington, not role players.\u00a0\u00a0That won\u2019t change until the next election.\u00a0\u00a0Then, as long as it\u2019s a fair election, we can expect that the Speaker won\u2019t be Mike Johnson, and maybe even the Leader of the Senate won\u2019t be Republican John Thune.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That would be a start.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was a busy day in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0The President let us know that Americans don\u2019t have to worry about oil \u2013 we have more than enough.\u00a0\u00a0And the Speaker of the House said in clear English said that Democrats can\u2019t win without \u201ccriminal, illegal immigrants\u201d voting.\u00a0\u00a0 Who Pays?
