{"id":8477,"date":"2026-03-23T10:03:59","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T14:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8477"},"modified":"2026-03-23T10:04:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T14:04:03","slug":"eyes-on-us-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/03\/23\/eyes-on-us-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Eyes on Us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let\u2019s see:\u00a0\u00a0standard references for essays on \u201cOur America\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s the US Constitution (the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/constitution\">Cornell Law School<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0site).\u00a0And there\u2019s the Declaration of Independence (<a href=\"https:\/\/avalon.law.yale.edu\/18th_century\/declare.asp\">the Yale Law School site<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0But probably the next reference most used is the musical \u201cHamilton\u201d, that has placed it\u2019s imprimatur on every phase and side of American politics in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century.\u00a0\u00a0Who has \u201ceyes on us\u201d \u2013 well, as Washington sang in the production:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ws_pklV1cP8\">History has its eyes on you<\/a>\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was a public school teacher for twenty-eight years (high school Dean of Students for eight more after that).\u00a0\u00a0I taught history and government, middle school and high school, with a smattering of other social studies topics.\u00a0\u00a0So when I hear Chris Jackson sing \u201cHistory has its eyes on you\u201d, I know what that looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I was in elementary school, my older teachers (in their forties) were World War II veteran aged.\u00a0\u00a0To them, that global conflagration didn\u2019t seem like history, it felt more like current events (my parents as well).\u00a0\u00a0I think every Junior High and High School had a \u201cSergeant Miller\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We had one in Kettering\u2019s Van Buren Jr. High, though I didn\u2019t have class with him.\u00a0\u00a0He taught World War II from his perspective, a soldier on the ground.\u00a0\u00a0His classes were ready to \u201cdive for cover\u201d in many lessons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In high school, I watched as my sister\u2019s friends agonized over the Vietnam War.\u00a0\u00a0Some were drafted, some volunteered, and some disappeared (headed for Canada).\u00a0\u00a0Vietnam was a war \u201cin living color\u201d in our living room.\u00a0\u00a0We were \u201clive\u201d every night, as NBC\u2019s Huntley-Brinkley Report, shared a firsthand view of the struggle (NBC &#8211; even then \u2013 loyalty and habits die hard).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vietnam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what hit me hardest about Vietnam, was seeing one of our music teachers have an emotional breakdown when she got the news that her brother wasn\u2019t coming back from the battle.\u00a0\u00a0She finally left the school for the year, overcome with grief.\u00a0\u00a0Vietnam was current events for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my generation, lots of things were defined by what you did during Vietnam.\u00a0\u00a0Bob Mueller passed away last week. He was the former FBI Director and Special Counsel investigating the 2016 election.\u00a0\u00a0But during Vietnam, he left his cushy Princeton education and went to war as a Marine Lieutenant.\u00a0\u00a0On the other hand, Donald Trump, the current President of the United States, did what many others of means did.\u00a0\u00a0He found a way out of the draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I started teaching, there was a whole cohort of teachers just a few years older, who got deferred by going into the classroom.\u00a0\u00a0They found their way out of \u201cservice\u201d in the war.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Vietnam wasn\u2019t quite history in 1978, it was, what we would say in modern parlance, \u201ctoo soon\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Grandparent\u2019s War<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time I left the classroom in 2006, Vietnam was definitely history.\u00a0\u00a0It was the kids\u2019 grandparents\u2019 war.\u00a0\u00a0Those kids had a whole litany of wars to think about before they got back to Vietnam: The Cold War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the First Iraq War, 9-11, the War in Afghanistan, Iraq War II.\u00a0\u00a0Each time the question left over from Vietnam had to be answered.\u00a0\u00a0Does the United States belong in this war?\u00a0\u00a0Where do you stand?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the lessons we learned from Vietnam was this. No matter how opposed to a war you might be, don\u2019t take your opposition out on the soldiers fighting the battle.\u00a0\u00a0Save it for the policy makers who put our troops in harm\u2019s way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s going on in classrooms today?\u00a0\u00a0America is in a \u201cwar\u201d in Iran.\u00a0\u00a0The word \u201cwar\u201d is quoted, because US actions have been called an \u201cintervention\u201d, an \u201cexcursion\u201d, a \u201cwar of choice\u201d and a \u201cresponse to imminent threat\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It would be more than scary (<em>another Hamilton reference<\/em>) to be the teacher in that room.\u00a0\u00a0Politics are the \u201cthird rail\u201d of American education.\u00a0\u00a0For a teacher to lead a discussion about the terms above, puts them dangerously close to being \u201czapped\u201d.
