Not a Real Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be real about the \u201cSafe Act\u201d that President Trump is trying to force through the US Senate.\u00a0\u00a0The premise of the \u201cAct\u201d is that the American voting system is \u201cunsafe\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The prime example Trump uses is his \u201closs\u201d to Joe Biden in 2020.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, over sixty court cases, recounts and investigations in Georgia and Arizona, all show that Biden actually won.\u00a0\u00a0But Trump can\u2019t stomach that possibility, so somehow the 2020 election must be rigged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To set the record straight:\u00a0\u00a0the main evidence of voter frauds (duplicate voting and or ineligible voters) is kept by the Heritage Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the same group that wrote \u201cProject 2025\u201d for Trump.\u00a0\u00a0The bias there has always been in Trump\u2019s favor.\u00a0\u00a0But the\u00a0Heritage data<\/a>\u00a0shows the following:\u00a0\u00a0since 1982 they document 1,620 cases of voter fraud.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s an average of 37 cases a year, out of hundreds of millions of votes cast.\u00a0\u00a0To simplify:\u00a0\u00a0voter fraud is so rare that it doesn\u2019t impact the outcome of elections.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great Replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, that doesn\u2019t fit with the \u201cGreat Replacement\u201d theory of far-right America.\u00a0\u00a0They posit the following view:\u00a0\u00a0Democrats want \u201copen borders\u201d so more people of color will come into the United States.\u00a0\u00a0Those folks, they think, will more likely vote for Democratic candidates. The theorists fear that will give Democrats unassailable majorities to control the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the disconnect is that even if undocumented migrants are in the United States, they can\u2019t vote.\u00a0\u00a0And the last thing they are going to try to do is vote, as that exposes them as undocumented and puts them in jeopardy of removal.\u00a0\u00a0So that part of the \u201cGreat Replacement\u201d theory falls apart.\u00a0\u00a0But there is a more insidious underpinning to their idea.\u00a0\u00a0Many of the immigrants that come to the United States, legally or illegally, might want to become citizens.\u00a0\u00a0And, if they gain US citizenship, then they would be able to vote, just as waves of migrants have earned that right in the past.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the \u201cGreat Replacement\u201d folks don\u2019t want them to become citizens either.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s because many of them are advocates of a \u201cWhite America\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And they are up against a demographic reality.\u00a0\u00a0Within the next two decades, whites in America will become the largest \u201cminority\u201d, but not the majority anymore.\u00a0\u00a0So keeping people of color from gaining citizenship is a ploy to keep the white people that the Great Replacement folks claim to represent in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim Crow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0and beginning of the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0century, white people in America tried to maintain power through the \u201cJim Crow\u201d laws.\u00a0\u00a0Many of those were aimed at keeping black people, US citizens, from voting.\u00a0\u00a0The idea was that as long as the \u201cvote\u201d remained among the \u201cchosen\u201d white people, then the existing power structure could continue.\u00a0\u00a0The people of color were denied the vote by law. They used\u00a0\u201cgrandfather clauses\u201d (if your grandfather couldn\u2019t vote, you can\u2019t vote) or literacy tests (not required of white voters) or a fee to vote (a poll tax).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, those people who tried to enforce voting rights were threatened, attacked, and killed.\u00a0\u00a0In many places, law enforcement was on the side of the racists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s simple:\u00a0\u00a0if you can\u2019t win a free election with all eligible voters participating, then reduce those that can participate.\u00a0\u00a0And that\u2019s what the \u201cSafe Act\u201d would do.\u00a0\u00a0It would take perfectly legal voters, and deny them the right to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Safe Act isn\u2019t just a photo-ID law, requiring voters to present state ID at the polls.\u00a0\u00a0(Though even that law, a regulation here in Ohio with the strictest voter laws in the country, does deny the vote to otherwise eligible voters).\u00a0\u00a0In many states, the \u201cSafe Act\u201d paperwork would require that voters get a \u201cnational ID\u201d, like a passport.\u00a0\u00a0Currently, 50% of Americans do not have that document (USA Today<\/a>) which costs $165.\u00a0\u00a0If that is required, it creates a \u201ccost to vote\u201d, otherwise known as a poll tax, which is banned by the 24th<\/sup>\u00a0Amendment to the US Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, for a large number of legal American citizens, a tremendous amount of documentation would be required.\u00a0\u00a0The basic legal document for citizenship is a birth certificate.\u00a0\u00a0But 21.3 million Americans don\u2019t have access to their birth certificates (NPR<\/a>). Those citizens have used other forms to prove citizenship for voting registration.\u00a0\u00a0Under the \u201cSafe Act\u201d they would have to locate original documents.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, if their name has changed since birth (adoption, marriage, legal change) they would have to have certified copies of those documents as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authoritarian Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s not about making voting safe, it\u2019s about reducing the number of voters. In the Jim Crow days, there were poor white folks who were also unable to vote.\u00a0\u00a0But the powers were fine with that, as long as the vast number of people of color were denied too.\u00a0\u00a0Now, a large number of Trump supporters might not be able to vote.\u00a0\u00a0But Safe Act folks today are fine with that as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cSafe Act\u201d isn\u2019t making elections safer.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not a real problem.\u00a0\u00a0It is a scheme to keep opponents of the current administration from winning electoral majorities.\u00a0\u00a0Just like the Jim Crow Era, it\u2019s a way of cheating Jefferson\u2019s Declaration of Independence thesis:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThat\u2026governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Safe Act makes sure those just powers will be chosen by those governing, not the governed.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not a democracy (or even a Republic \u2013 for those still hanging on the difference).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a government of the few:  authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
