Car Wreck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I hate to admit it, but, I watched Donald Trump\u2019s State of the Union \u201caddress\u201d last night.\u00a0\u00a0I know, we weren\u2019t supposed to.\u00a0\u00a0In Trump\u2019s world, television ratings are almost as important as billion dollar \u201cpresents\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We were supposed to watch the \u201calternative\u201d State of the Union programming.\u00a0\u00a0But, there are those of us who watch NASCAR to see the wrecks.\u00a0\u00a0And when an Olympian drops down into the halfpipe, or speeds down the mountain at seventy-plus miles an hour, there\u2019s always the \u201cagony of defeat\u201d to go along with the \u201cthrill of victory\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I watched \u201cCircus Trumpius\u201d last night.\u00a0\u00a0There wasn\u2019t a single car wreck. But there wasn\u2019t much of a State of the Union either.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, it became the, record setting, award giving, heart-rending, bloodletting, \u201cgood versus evil\u201d, Trump show.\u00a0\u00a0It didn\u2019t have much to do with where our country is going.\u00a0\u00a0But it said a tremendous amount about where our country is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bingo!!!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Talk about a game:\u00a0\u00a0I even had my Gavin Newsom produced \u201cbingo card\u201d for canned Trump phrases.\u00a0\u00a0I didn\u2019t get \u201cBingo\u201d, but I did fill in the majority of my squares.\u00a0\u00a0He lied about tariffs (we do pay for them). He talked about the stock market (\u201cnever been anything like it\u201d). Trump said how good a soldier looked in his uniform (always a little creepy).\u00a0\u00a0And he blamed Biden and Obama for almost everything.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t know how he missed out on \u201cclean coal\u201d or using the term \u201cwoke\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And by my own personal count, there were twenty-eight major, outright lies.\u00a0\u00a0There were numbers made up out of thin air, or reversed from the real answer.\u00a0\u00a0And then there\u2019s that 600% less thing, a mathematical impossibility (after 100% less, it\u2019s zero).\u00a0But there were lots of medals.\u00a0\u00a0Trump likes medals. In fact, he joked about giving himself the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest military award for heroism.\u00a0\u00a0But he didn\u2019t do that.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, he awarded two. One was to a helicopter pilot wounded in the Venezuela raid that captured Maduros. The other was to a World War II vet, 100 years old.\u00a0\u00a0And to be clear, they both did a lot to\u00a0\u00a0earn our Nation\u2019s highest honor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump likes to \u201crub up\u201d against winners.\u00a0\u00a0And that \u201crubbing up\u201d seems to sully the value of the awards.\u00a0\u00a0There was also a Purple Heart to the West Virginia National Guardsman shot on the streets of Washington, DC. And he’s giving a Presidential Gold Medal to the goalie of the US Olympic Hockey Team.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, most of the team was there, wearing their Olympic Gold, and basking to the applause and the chants of \u201cUSA, USA, USA\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it almost felt like an\u00a0Oprah Show<\/em>\u00a0rip off.\u00a0\u00a0Kind of a, \u201cHey, up in the balcony, look under your seat and see \u2013 yes, you\u2019ve won the Congressional Medal of Honor!!!!\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Or maybe\u00a0The Price is Right<\/em>, \u201cWould the Olympic Hockey Team, or the freed Venezuelan dissident, \u2018Come on down\u2019\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all reminds me of Donald Trump, 2015. He liked \u201cwinners\u201d who didn\u2019t get captured, not \u201closers\u201d like John McCain who spent years in a North Vietnamese prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good v Evil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who was good?\u00a0\u00a0The team, the medal winners, Melania, Jared, the Cabinet, and the Republicans in the room who got a great plyo workout, jumping up and down to cheer on the President.\u00a0\u00a0Who was bad?\u00a0\u00a0Well, you know:\u00a0\u00a0Obama, Biden, the \u201ccriminal illegal aliens\u201d, all of the Democratic cities, and, all of the Democrats in the room. \u00a0All Trump needed to do was give a \u201cthumbs down\u201d, and you felt like the ICE guys would rush in and take them away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did Trump want?\u00a0\u00a0He wants to restrict voting access, to stop an imaginary flood of illegal voting that even his own think-tank, the\u00a0Heritage Foundation<\/a>, says does NOT exist.\u00a0\u00a0The Trump team thinks that the fewer people allowed to vote, the better Trump and MAGA candidates are likely to do.\u00a0\u00a0So, strict voter ID, proof of citizenship, little or no mail in ballots, and all sorts of security around election sites are their \u201cplan\u201d to protect (or win) elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Records<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I remember when Bill Clinton set the old record for the length of the State of the Union message: almost an hour and a half.\u00a0\u00a0Clinton\u2019 Arkansas accent covered us with \u201cmolasses\u201d, and frankly, was the best antidote for insomnia.\u00a0\u00a0But Clinton had a lot to talk about, lots of plans for the future, to make America a better place. Many of us slept through parts of his speech, because we weren\u2019t worried about when the next \u201ccar wreck\u201d would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I suspect everyone was wide awake last night, waiting for \u201cthe other shoe to drop\u201d through the one hour and forty-seven minute ramble.\u00a0\u00a0And give Trump credit:\u00a0\u00a0he stuck to the speech, he didn\u2019t dance on the stage, and I didn\u2019t get to check the box that he \u201c\u2026slurs his words\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eggs and Epstein<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump told us the price of eggs and gas is down, and that everyone is doing better. It’s kind of like the ICE shootings in Minneapolis. We aren’t supposed to believe our “lying eyes” or our “lying wallets”. But he didn\u2019t mention the word \u201cEpstein\u201d, even though his Justice Department was accused of covering up damaging information directly against Trump, just yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he did say that he didn\u2019t need Congress to raise tariffs, in spite of the Supreme Court ruling.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, and what will he do with all that tariff money that he can\u2019t get right now?\u00a0\u00a0Well, he suggested that we wouldn\u2019t need income tax anymore, implying that tariffs from other countries could pay all of our national costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So he lied, again.  Other countries don\u2019t \u201cpay\u201d tariffs, we do, in increased prices.  But there\u2019s always a good story on the \u201cCircus Trumpius\u201d show.  No truth is required.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
