Violent Encounter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A car stops on an open road, blocking both lanes.\u00a0\u00a0Armed occupants leap from the vehicle, and race back to the car behind them.\u00a0\u00a0Inside that blocked vehicle, a woman confronts masked, unidentifiable armed men surrounding her, ordering her out of the car.\u00a0\u00a0She doesn\u2019t give in.\u00a0\u00a0She videos the encounter, she calls the police, the real police, for help, and she tells them she is not violating the law, just observing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the armed men open the driver\u2019s door, and drag her from the car.\u00a0 Her husband arrives. He sees the car being searched, and demands to know where the warrant is. The two sides bicker over the US Constitution, and whether unidentified men can take a person into custody for the offense of \u201cfollowing their car\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s tough to make a real obstruction charge, when she physically wasn\u2019t obstructing.\u00a0\u00a0The true charge would be \u201cannoyance of so-called Federal agents\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But that one isn’t written in the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Detention Facilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This story is not from an apocalyptic movie of the 1970\u2019s, about a dystopian future when armed thugs wander the streets.\u00a0\u00a0This scene is actually from yesterday\u2019s news.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s happening all over America.\u00a0\u00a0Federal \u201cagent\u201d brutality is only one side of the what America looks like today.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cBig, Beautiful Bill\u201d\u00a0\u00a0that Congress passed last year, allocated $165 Billion to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s almost 20% of what the Department of Defense gets to run all of the Armed Services:\u00a0\u00a0Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Space Force and build ships and planes and a “Golden Dome” defense system that Ronald Reagan dreamed about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ve more than doubled the number of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) agents, to 22,000.\u00a0\u00a0And they are contracting for detention facilities (camps, jails, areas) throughout the US, to the tune of $45 Billion.\u00a0\u00a0To put that into some perspective:\u00a0\u00a0our local school district recently built a big, beautiful new high school designed for 1500 kids.\u00a0\u00a0It cost around $100 million (and it\u2019s already at capacity).\u00a0\u00a0Homeland Security is building detention facilities that are the equivalent of 450 of those big high schools throughout the country, to house \u201cdetained\u201d migrants.\u00a0\u00a0And I\u2019m sure they aren\u2019t worried about keeping a \u201cthree foot interval between desks in a classroom\u201d that the new school has.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Million a Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Trump Administration leaders (Stephen Miller at the fore) are interested in deporting a million people a year. They want to wipe America clean of what they call \u201cillegals\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0(Note:\u00a0\u00a0illegal implies that they are criminals, which the vast majority of undocumented are not.\u00a0\u00a0Crossing the border without permission is a \u201ccivil\u201d offense, akin to getting a traffic ticket.\u00a0\u00a0Many entered the United States with permission, and even the help, of the government. We don\u2019t call speeding or even serial parking violators criminals, do we<\/em>?).\u00a0\u00a0But Miller is going farther than that.\u00a0\u00a0With little notice, he has ordered DHS to revoke the \u201cTemporary Protective Status\u201d (TPS) from Haitian immigrants.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s in spite of their homeland being ruled by ruthless, murdering gangs, and still suffering from the twin economic disasters of earthquake and hurricane.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those Haitians have lived for years in the US, built lives, and powered the economic re-birth of American towns like Springfield, Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0Now they will be uprooted.\u00a0\u00a0And if they do not leave the United States immediately, then they will be considered \u201ccriminal\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0While a Federal Judge has granted a temporary reprieve, soon, ICE and CBP will start wandering the back roads of Springfield, looking for a black man at the wheel, or a black woman in the grocery line, and demanding \u201cpapers\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0If they don\u2019t produce the papers, or are \u201crevoked\u201d TPS Haitians; they could end up in one of the camps, jails, areas, facilities that DHS is building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History Remembered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve been here before in America.\u00a0\u00a0Soon after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, many Americans looked at people of Japanese ancestry as \u201cthe enemy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And it wasn\u2019t just folks with Japanese citizenship, it was US citizens who were descended from Japan as well.\u00a0\u00a0On Hawaii and the West Coast, these AMERICAN CITIZENS were placed into custody, and taken to remote \u201crelocation camps\u201d; far away from their homes and properties.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Men, women, children and the elderly were under armed guard, behind barbed wire, held without due process for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The euphemistically named \u201cJapanese Relocation\u201d during World War II has been a source of American shame ever since. None of the \u201crelocated\u201d were ever convicted of espionage.\u00a0\u00a0And, there were no German or Italian descendants \u201crelocated\u201d, even though war was declared on those nations as well.\u00a0\u00a0It was done purely on a racial, and racist, basis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revisiting Our Shame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0I once had the son of Japanese immigrants, born an American citizen in Los Angeles; speak to my eighth grade classes.\u00a0\u00a0He was the shortstop on his high school baseball team one day, a regular American kid.\u00a0\u00a0The next game was his big concern. But the next day, he was \u201cinterned\u201d as a possible enemy.\u00a0\u00a0He ultimately earned his way out of the camp. He joined the US Army to fight in one of the most highly decorated units of World War II.\u00a0\u00a0But he never forgot how it felt to be \u201ca US kid\u201d one day , and \u201cthe enemy\u201d the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump Administration will argue; \u201cthey aren\u2019t citizens\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But the world has seen what camps: relocation, concentration or refugee, really means.\u00a0\u00a0A majority is trying to \u201ccontain\u201d a minority.\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s happening here, again.\u00a0\u00a0The shameful acts of the Japanese Relocation have become the current blueprint for the Department of Homeland Security.\u00a0\u00a0And they\u2019ve got all the money they need to do it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love America, but I am ashamed of what we are becoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
