{"id":8379,"date":"2026-01-27T09:22:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8379"},"modified":"2026-01-27T09:22:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:22:28","slug":"follow-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/01\/27\/follow-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Follow Them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin was a lawyer and politician in France in the mid-19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Century.\u00a0\u00a0He was an early leader of the French Revolution of 1848, but he later led a \u201cprotest\u201d against the Revolutionary government, one that others called an \u201cinsurrection\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He was exiled.\u00a0\u00a0But what he is famous for is this phrase, the stereotype of a politician :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cThere go the people. I must follow them, for I am their leader.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On Video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFern\u201d is the first snowstorm of 2026.\u00a0\u00a0It dropped more than a foot of snow on Pataskala, and from Saturday night through Monday morning, most folks were stuck at home.\u00a0\u00a0Along with the snow, the temperature dropped through the floor.\u00a0\u00a0As I write this essay, it\u2019s eight degrees outside, with a windchill of\u00a0\u00a0minus fifteen.\u00a0\u00a0Tonight it will be \u201creal temperature\u201d minus four.\u00a0\u00a0So like most folks, we were in the house, mostly watching TV (and taking care of the dogs \u2013 the little one does not like snow above her head!!!).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jenn and I watched as the very real tragedy in Minneapolis unfolded.\u00a0\u00a0It was well documented by phone videos, the essence of protest against ICE.\u00a0\u00a0Americans\u00a0\u00a0who oppose ICE can\u2019t stop their actions in the streets.\u00a0\u00a0All they can do is document, on video, for the world to see.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That documentation is a powerful thing.\u00a0\u00a0Why do most Americans know the name of an obscure place in Selma, Alabama, the Edmund Pettis Bridge?\u00a0\u00a0Because the police brutality in March of 1965 there was documented on film, and quickly shown to the American people.\u00a0\u00a0It interrupted ABC\u2019s \u201cSunday Night Movie\u201d, ironically,\u00a0<em>Judgment at Nuremburg<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cBloody Sunday\u201d became a turning point in the Civil Rights movement, and helped pass the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We all saw what happened.\u00a0\u00a0And no matter what \u201cinterpretation\u201d others tried to force on us, we all believed our \u201clying\u201d eyes.\u00a0\u00a0Alex Pretti did not have a gun in hand, he had a phone.\u00a0\u00a0Alex Pretti was on the ground, face down, with ICE agents on each limb, when his gun was found.\u00a0\u00a0And he was shot in the back, first once, then nine more times.\u00a0\u00a0We watched an execution on the street of Minneapolis, just as we watched a police officer choke the life from George Floyd five years ago, not too far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Politics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The \u201cpolitics\u201d started from the moment the videos went public.\u00a0\u00a0Secretary Noem declaimed Pretti as a \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d, and created a whole false narrative about an attempt to create \u201cmass ICE casualties\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Greg Bovino, the \u201con site\u201d ICE commander, lectured America about \u201cgood and bad choices\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He claimed Pretti \u201cmade a choice\u201d, and got the consequences.\u00a0\u00a0It echoed Defense Secretary Hegseth\u2019s favorite phrase, \u201cFAFO\u201d (F##k around and Find Out).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And many Republican politicians, including Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, hid behind the results of some future investigation. That\u2019s despite ICE itself was running that investigation, not Minnesota authorities or even his own FBI.\u00a0\u00a0But it all rang false, compared to the multiple views of the actual event.\u00a0\u00a0Americans kept watching it, over and over, as the snow piled up and the temperatures fell.\u00a0\u00a0And what we saw wasn\u2019t anything like what they were saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Circles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And there was a second issue.\u00a0\u00a0If we drew a \u201cvin diagram\u201d of American politics, many of those dedicated to Second Amendment protections would fall in the same \u201ccircle\u201d as those who support the actions of the current Administration.\u00a0\u00a0But here was an American citizen, clearly shot because he legally was carrying a gun.\u00a0\u00a0He didn\u2019t \u201cbrandish\u201d it, he didn\u2019t reach for it, the ICE agents wrestling with him didn\u2019t even notice it until Pretti was already face down on the ground.\u00a0\u00a0But ten shots were still fired at him at point-blank range.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And that \u201ccontradiction\u201d has required politicians to change their tune, even those in the White House.\u00a0\u00a0Not only do Americans believe their \u201clying eyes\u201d, but we know the gun wasn\u2019t the issue, even those who circle the President.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Surprise, ten Republican US Senators are questioning ICE actions in Minnesota.\u00a0\u00a0Surprise, Bovino, the \u201cposter boy\u201d of the Trump\/Stephen Miller migrant roundup, is headed back to his post in El Centro, California, and soon to retire.\u00a0\u00a0And surprise, President Trump had a \u201cgood conversation\u201d with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.\u00a0\u00a0It sounds like things will change in Minneapolis, and the ICE \u201cflood\u201d will end.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Republicans are realizing that \u201ctheir people\u201d can\u2019t support what happened in Minneapolis.\u00a0\u00a0Even a Republican running for Governor in Minnesota dropped out of the race.\u00a0\u00a0Sure, he couldn\u2019t accept the \u201cspin\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But he also saw the political reality:\u00a0\u00a0a Republican can\u2019t win in Minnesota right now.\u00a0\u00a0Minnesotans believe their \u201clying eyes\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere go the voters,&nbsp;&nbsp;I must follow them, because I am their leader.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin was a lawyer and politician in France in the mid-19th\u00a0Century.\u00a0\u00a0He was an early leader of the French Revolution of 1848, but he later led a \u201cprotest\u201d against the Revolutionary government, one that others called an \u201cinsurrection\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He was exiled.\u00a0\u00a0But what he is famous for is this phrase, the stereotype of a politician : &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/01\/27\/follow-them\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Follow Them&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8379","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
