{"id":832,"date":"2018-05-06T13:11:17","date_gmt":"2018-05-06T17:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=832"},"modified":"2018-05-06T13:11:17","modified_gmt":"2018-05-06T17:11:17","slug":"pathways-of-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2018\/05\/06\/pathways-of-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Pathways of Resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pathways of Resistance<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump has been President for 1 year, 105 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes and 33 seconds at the moment I\u2019m writing (<a href=\"http:\/\/howlonghasdonaldtrumpbeenpresident.com\/\">there\u2019s a webpage for that<\/a>, surprise!)\u00a0 From that moment of his inauguration, folks who couldn\u2019t believe he was elected President have been saying:\u00a0 what can I do to resist the changes he is making to our country?\u00a0 How can I help to protect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the environment<\/li>\n<li>healthcare<\/li>\n<li>voting rights<\/li>\n<li>Dreamers<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s Rights (including reproductive rights)<\/li>\n<li>Middle Class incomes<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Gun control<\/li>\n<li>Our children from going to war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>America has always had a tradition of loyal opposition.\u00a0 In the past few years, as our politics have grown more divisive, it has become more difficult to see the \u201cloyalty\u201d in the actions of the opponents.\u00a0 Everyone claims to be fighting for the \u201cAmerica\u201d they believe in, but we seem to have an increasingly different view of what that nation looks and acts like.\u00a0 Historically we\u2019ve been here before, most notably in in 1850\u2019s prior to the Civil War, but also in 1800, the mid-1820\u2019s, the late 1880\u2019s, early 1920\u2019s, and the 1960\u2019s \u2013 opposition and resistance are not new nor uncommon and it doesn\u2019t always end in war.\u00a0 Sometimes, it has brought wars to an end.<\/p>\n<p>So in our current climate, what can be done to \u201cResist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First of all, the primary duty of all Americans, vote.\u00a0 Past elections show that the more negative a campaign gets, the fewer people come to the polls.\u00a0 Negative campaigns are designed to drive down the opponents\u2019 votes, and clearly the 2016 election was impacted by the negative ads on both sides.\u00a0 If this year\u2019s primary is any indication, the general election of 2018 (at least here in Ohio) will be one of the \u201cdirtiest\u201d in history.\u00a0 Low voter turnout inevitably favors Republicans, don\u2019t let the trickery of campaign advertising keep you from voting.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind it\u2019s not just advertising on television, radio, or newspapers (for those who still read them.)\u00a0It\u2019s ads in social media, it\u2019s biased or faked news articles, it\u2019s the re-tweeted or shared post that makes outlandish claims.\u00a0 All of these become a part of the decision making process, but, more importantly they create a climate where voters choose not to cast a vote for the \u201clesser of two evils,\u201d but to sit out the whole process.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be \u201cconned\u201d that it doesn\u2019t matter who you vote for:\u00a0 if the election of 2016 taught us anything, it\u2019s that every vote counts, even if it\u2019s a \u201clesser evil\u201d choice.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with advertising and social media, the second duty is to ascertain what is fact and what is propaganda.\u00a0 In our \u2018post-truth\u201d society, reaching some common truths about issues is becoming more difficult.\u00a0 Actual research may be required.\u00a0 As part of finding the truth, resistance means bringing that truth to the public, to your friends and family, even to those who you know disagree with you politically.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be in an obnoxious way, but ultimately \u201cfake news\u201d continues because we passively accept it.\u00a0 If every fake item is called out, then it will be more difficult for it to become \u201creal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, currently Facebook is trending with the claims by opponents of the Iran Nuclear Treaty that Iran lied during the negotiations, and that the American diplomats, notably John Kerry, were fooled.\u00a0 The primary source for this information is a speech by Benjiman Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel.\u00a0 Netanyahu dredged up old intelligence from several years ago about the Iranian nuclear program, information that was well known to the negotiators at the time.\u00a0 It has been presented as a treaty violation, but in reality, it outlined actions that Iran gave up as part of the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>So resist by knowing what is true and what is \u201cfake,\u201d then refuse to accept the premise of the fake.\u00a0Speak truth, even when it has to be whispered softly to friends who believe the falsity.\u00a0 Give them doubts; \u00a0then let those doubts increase as they see a President who willingly lies to America.<\/p>\n<p>Third: participate in the most American of activities, protest.\u00a0 It can change things, from civil rights to Vietnam, from the labor movement to abolitionism to women\u2019s suffrage to the most recent marches of the Parkland kids.\u00a0Step out into the world, make a sign, walk and chant and don\u2019t be afraid to change the world.\u00a0 There will be political campaigns in the fall to help, and there are continual actions going on (particularly in Columbus\u00a0 &#8211; here\u2019s a web calendar of events, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resistancecalendar.org\/?location=43062&amp;orderby=start_date%20desc&amp;range=40234&amp;startDate=2018-05-06T04%3A00%3A00.000Z\">Resistance Calendar<\/a>.)\u00a0 If marching isn\u2019t for you, then make your voice heard by writing about what issue concerns you most and putting it out on social media, or as a letter to Congress, or to the news media.\u00a0 Or, write a blog (here\u2019s mine \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dahlman.online\/\">Trump World<\/a>).
