{"id":8317,"date":"2026-01-05T10:07:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T15:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8317"},"modified":"2026-01-05T10:07:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T15:07:14","slug":"donroe-doctrine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2026\/01\/05\/donroe-doctrine\/","title":{"rendered":"Donroe Doctrine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAFO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The US invasion of Venezuela last weekend wasn\u2019t about drugs.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t about \u201cnation building\u201d, and it wasn\u2019t about democracy.\u00a0\u00a0By Sunday afternoon, Americans and the world got down to the real reasons for the incursion.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile, as the US bragged about only three Americans wounded, reports are that at least forty Venezuelans were killed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/03\/world\/americas\/venezuela-airstrike-civilian-deaths.html\">NYT<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Under the aegis of Defense Secretary Hegseth\u2019s favorite phrase, the Venezuelans \u201cFAFO\u2019ed\u201d. (F**k Around and Find Out.\u00a0\u00a0He addressed this to the world along with Trump, Rubio, and the Chief of Staff).\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s along with the 115 others killed in the \u201cboat strikes\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/12\/31\/g-s1-104194\/us-military-strikes-drug-boats-survivors\">NPR<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I bet little Pete has \u201chigh score\u201d in his FAFO game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The US military invaded a foreign capital and took the President and his wife.\u00a0\u00a0The two were staged for pictures, then transported to a prison in New York.\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019ll stand trial on drug conspiracy charges, much like Juan Hernandez, the former President of Honduras.\u00a0\u00a0He was sentenced to a forty-five year Federal prison term.\u00a0\u00a0President Trump pardoned him a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Righteous Might<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So why did the United States set the \u201cexample\u201d of using our \u201crighteous might\u201d against a much smaller nation?\u00a0\u00a0President Trump himself said it:\u00a0\u00a0oil.\u00a0\u00a0The Trump Administration wants access to Venezuelan oil reserves, the largest in the world (<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/oil-reserves-by-country\">World Population<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0The inept corruption of the Maduro Administration left that nation with only a trickle of what could\u00a0\u00a0be production outdoing Saudi Arabia.\u00a0\u00a0Trump claimed that the oil in the Venezuelan ground was really \u201cUS oil\u201d, stolen from American companies in 1976 when the resource was nationalized.\u00a0\u00a0At that time, the big multi-national petroleum companies (Exxon, Mobil, Chevron, et al) were compensated; paid more than a billion dollars for their assets.\u00a0\u00a0And they were invited to stay (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caracaschronicles.com\/2025\/12\/26\/the-theft-that-never-was-inside-venezuelas-1976-oil-takeover\/\">Caracas<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And, Venezuela has a vast wealth of \u201crare earths\u201d, minerals to be mined to help fuel the modern world.\u00a0\u00a0Nickel, bauxite, iron ore and many others are potentially available (<a href=\"https:\/\/investornews.com\/market-opinion\/venezuelas-resource-paradox-critical-minerals-oil-and-the-price-of-mismanagement\/\">Investor News<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0But since the Venezuelan government has done little to \u201copen up\u201d that \u201crare earth\u201d wealth, the US is coming in to get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gunboat Diplomacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This isn\u2019t new.\u00a0\u00a0In 1853 US Commodore Matthew Perry sailed a fleet into Tokyo Bay, and pointed\u00a0\u00a0his cannons at the Japanese capital.\u00a0\u00a0He gave them a choice:\u00a0\u00a0negotiate with us, or we will attack.\u00a0\u00a0The Japanese recognized the inevitable, and opened trade discussions with the Americans, and Perry\u2019s action became the prime example of \u201cGunboat Diplomacy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Using force to open up regions to US economic development didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The late 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and early 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century were replete with US examples of military force against smaller nations.\u00a0\u00a0In Central and South America, the US sent in ships and troops dozens of times over the years, often to support US companies, especially oil, mineral and agricultural companies (US Sugar and Anaconda Copper are just two).\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s what the US Marines &#8220;did&#8221; in the late 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So let\u2019s call this invasion what it is:\u00a0the US stealing control of the economic development of Venezuela.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the same reason that Trump blew up at Ukrainian President Zelenskyy during a public\u00a0meeting \u00a0at the White House last year.\u00a0\u00a0Trump wanted Ukrainian \u201crare earths\u201d; Zelenskyy wasn\u2019t willing to give away Ukraine\u2019s resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Century Policy \u2013 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;Century World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump loves the economic policies of the late 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century; tariffs, and now, forced economic development and Gunboat Diplomacy.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cImperial America\u201d is throwing out migrants from South and Central America, and then threatening to take over their birthplaces as well.\u00a0\u00a0Venezuela was first, Columbia and Cuba may be next on the list.\u00a0\u00a0The<em> Gerald Ford Carrier Group<\/em> is still on duty in the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And, in a wholly amoral way, Trump\u2019s view might be successful.\u00a0\u00a0He sees the world as a \u201czero sum game\u201d, either we get the resources or someone else does.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m sure he\u2019s found a way to personally profit from this as well, but in the larger sense, it\u2019s a simplistic economic view that might have some support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But there\u2019s a bigger issue here, in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Century.\u00a0\u00a0If the US can do this, then what prevents other \u201cbig nations\u201d from taking over smaller nations.\u00a0\u00a0How are US actions in Venezuela different from Putin\u2019s action in Ukraine?\u00a0\u00a0What about China,\u00a0looking for any excuse to try to subsume the independent island nation of Taiwan, and the East China Sea?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Where is the \u201cmoral standing\u201d of the United States, if we are doing exactly the same thing in Venezuela, and other countries within our \u201csphere of influence\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0After all, this is the historic \u201c<em>Donroe Doctrine<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/article\/venezuela-trumps-donroe-doctrine-and-three-dilemmas-facing-europe\/\">European Council<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 But, the US has been doing this since John Quincy Adams (the\u00a0Monroe\u00a0Doctrine, that is), back in 1823.
