{"id":8283,"date":"2025-12-28T09:10:56","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T14:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8283"},"modified":"2025-12-28T09:10:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T14:10:57","slug":"project-2029-part-the-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/12\/28\/project-2029-part-the-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Project 2029 \u2013 Part the First"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unalterable Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In an essay last week, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/12\/21\/8278\/\">It\u2019s Getting Near Christmas<\/a>\u201d, I proposed that Progressive\/Democrats (or, my favorite label, Liberals) follow the example of our right-wing fellow citizens.\u00a0\u00a0In the interregnum between the first and second Trump Administrations, those right-wingers were distraught at losing the Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0They thought that their \u201clast best chance\u201d to alter America to their own image was lost.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But instead of wallowing in despair, they went to work.\u00a0\u00a0Even as Democrats in power led the way towards \u201cnormalizing\u201d the United States, the \u201cboys\u201d at the Heritage Foundation (few women involved) were dreaming \u201cbig dreams\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Instead of \u201cgiving up\u201d and finding ways to accommodate themselves to the new Biden order, they prepared for total revolution.\u00a0\u00a0And it worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It was a grim happenstance of history. The Trump Assassination plot and Biden\u2019s aging, blended with the nomination of Kamala Harris as the first\u00a0\u00a0Black\/West Asian and woman candidate of a major party for President.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In the end, my <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2019\/04\/29\/put-on-my-foil-hat\/\">foil hat<\/a> theories to the contrary, it was too much for the American people to deal with. They narrowly re-elected Trump.\u00a0\u00a0That opened the door to Project 2025, Stephen Miller and Russell Vought, and a wholesale revamping of American government, and life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I met some friends last week at a Christmas Party.\u00a0\u00a0They read my essays, and feel that I was more than just uncertain about the future of America.\u00a0\u00a0They said, I sounded like I was in despair, and that our \u201clast, best chance\u201d was done.\u00a0\u00a0Looking back at some of those writings, they\u2019re right.\u00a0\u00a0I am concerned about what could happen to America.\u00a0\u00a0I am saddened by what I see Americans doing.\u00a0\u00a0And I am worried that should we fail to stop the Project 2025 \u201cboys\u201d, they will make unalterable changes to the American \u201cstory\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visualization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, I look to a technique I used as a high school track coach.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s simple:\u00a0\u00a0if an athlete can\u2019t envision clearing a bar, or winning a race, or throwing a distance; it&#8217;s unlikely they can achieve it.\u00a0\u00a0My coaching mentor, John McGowan, often wrote it on his \u201cpost-game\u201d reports to the team:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhat the mind can conceive, the body can achieve\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Others put it more simply:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIf you say you can\u2019t, you won\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0If you say you can, you will!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As a coach, my job was to train the body, instill technique, and provide opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0But it was also to convince them that what I was asking wasn\u2019t impossible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">How could a boy clearing 10\u20196\u201d in the pole vault see themselves growing to clear 15\u20190\u201d, if they couldn\u2019t imagine even making 11\u20190\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0They had to see a path, the progression towards a goal.\u00a0\u00a0We simply had to envision it, step by step.\u00a0\u00a0I had them close their eyes and visualize success.\u00a0\u00a0Feel the pole shooting their body into the air. Watch the technique of going over the bar. Hear the air rush with the bar cleared and the long fall towards the pit. Stand and see the bar still up. Feel what it is like to have a goal achieved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conceive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today, we must conceive what victory will look like.\u00a0\u00a0We must envision what needs to be done to make sure that the United States will never be so degraded again.\u00a0\u00a0We must visualize the process, the progression to the America we want it to be.\u00a0\u00a0And, for me, that process is hard to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s taken me a while to figure out why.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve done it before. \u00a0I lived through Nixon, and Reagan and Bush.\u00a0\u00a0But, I\u2019m sixty-nine years old. It will take decades to repair the damage done, decades that I don\u2019t necessarily have.\u00a0\u00a0So, like the boy who couldn\u2019t envision making 11\u2019 and therefore couldn\u2019t see 15\u2019, I see the ultimate goal as beyond my time.\u00a0\u00a0 What I resolved, is to see the path, the progression towards the America I believe we can become.\u00a0\u00a0And, maybe, help get to 13\u20196\u201d before my time is done.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not 15&#8242;, but it&#8217;s a start. \u00a0So let us begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restrain the Presidency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the most difficult things to do is to achieve power, then give it up.\u00a0\u00a0But that\u2019s exactly what the next Democratic President must do.\u00a0\u00a0The Trump Presidencies have proven one thing:\u00a0\u00a0that old saw that \u201cThe Presidency makes the man\u201d is a myth.\u00a0\u00a0The United States depended on norms, precedents, and traditions to restrain our elected leader.\u00a0\u00a0But Trump, and the \u201cunitary executive\u201d theory of the Heritage \u201cboys\u201d, proves that self-restraint is not enough.\u00a0\u00a0So the first thing the President, and the new Congress must do, is codify the powers of the President.\u00a0\u00a0Put them into law, and place boundaries on Presidential power in black and white.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s precedence for that.\u00a0\u00a0After Watergate and Nixon\u2019s resignation, the Congress instituted a series of laws to prevent his kind of corruption.\u00a0\u00a0The Presidents after Nixon did as well, building a legal \u201cwall\u201d between the White House and the Department of Justice.\u00a0\u00a0But that Presidential \u201cwall\u201d was built with \u201cnorms\u201d; unwritten rules.\u00a0\u00a0And clearly the Trump Administration feels no compunction today about breeching all of those norms for their own gain.\u00a0\u00a0So now, it needs to be \u201cBlack Letter Law\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nuclear Threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We need to renew the laws we already have,\u00a0\u00a0ones that were gutted by the Supreme Court.\u00a0\u00a0The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is now a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d, with all of its enforcement mechanisms removed.\u00a0\u00a0Somehow, Chief Justice Roberts and his majority have decided that there is no discrimination in America, and therefore no need to remediate electoral discrimination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s exactly the \u201cjudicial activism\u201d that the Heritage \u201cboys\u201d have been decrying for years.\u00a0\u00a0Congress must step in and make policies to protect minorities in America, a Nation where minorities are in fact, the majority.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The same is true with the Affordable Care Act. The provisions that made it \u201caffordable\u201d were gutted by the same Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And if the Court determines to not give up its power grab, then Congress has remedies, including the \u201cnuclear option\u201d of adding more Justices.\u00a0\u00a0When that was threatened in the 1930\u2019s, the Court was overruling the New Deal legislation to rebuild America\u2019s economy.\u00a0\u00a0While \u201cCourt Packing \u201d never became law, oddly, the existing Justices began to find for the New Deal, instead of against it.\u00a0\u00a0So change can happen, if the right levers of power are exercised.\u00a0\u00a0And there\u2019s always the \u201cnuclear threat\u201d, if need be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Represent People, Not Parties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We need to guarantee that the Congress actually represents America.\u00a0\u00a0Gerrymandering has altered American political life, putting an emphasis on extremism over compromise.\u00a0\u00a0While I agree with Gavin Newsom in fighting redistricting \u201cfire with fire\u201d now, ultimately the United States needs to get beyond this naked political power play of slicing neighborhoods and communities for political gain.\u00a0\u00a0We need to recognize that we are a government \u201cof the people\u201d, not of political parties or geographic expanses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And, as far as the Senate of the United States is concerned, it too should be more representative of our Nation.\u00a0\u00a0Washington DC should become a state, as should Puerto Rico.\u00a0\u00a0If that results in a more permanent Democratic majority in the Senate, so be it.\u00a0\u00a0If the opposition party doesn\u2019t like it, then they should adapt to a new American reality, rather than restrict representation.\u00a0\u00a0Political parties can change:\u00a0\u00a0Republicans used to have liberals, and Democrats used to have conservatives and even segregationists.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Republicans had a complete plan to change after their loss in 2012, but abandoned it with their total sellout to  right-wing forces.\u00a0\u00a0We are all paying the penalty for that now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-Linear Progression<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you need precedent for that, simply look back at our history.\u00a0\u00a0In the years before the Civil War, compromises were constantly made to control Senate membership.\u00a0\u00a0The Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act; all pivoted around the two more seats in the chamber each statehood created.\u00a0\u00a0While they failed to stop a Civil War, they are precedent for change to reflect the Nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are more changes, more proposals to consider.\u00a0\u00a0If Project 2025 ran to 900 pages, Project 2029 may take as many.\u00a0\u00a0Detail is important; it\u2019s a plan, not a dream.\u00a0\u00a0So this is \u201cPart the First\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0I promise to return with more.\u00a0\u00a0In the meantime, visualize what America is learning, and what we can still become.\u00a0\u00a0Our hope for a \u201cmore perfect union\u201d isn\u2019t dead.
