{"id":8273,"date":"2025-12-18T09:47:54","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T14:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8273"},"modified":"2025-12-18T09:47:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T14:47:55","slug":"our-hey-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/12\/18\/our-hey-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Hey-Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"193\" height=\"261\" data-attachment-id=\"8275\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/12\/18\/our-hey-day\/unknown-15\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Unknown.jpeg?fit=193%2C261&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"193,261\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Unknown\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Unknown.jpeg?fit=193%2C261&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dahlman.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Unknown.jpeg?fit=193%2C261&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8275\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">My grandfather was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880, and died there in 1967.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He was a sports editor for the <em>Cincinnati Post<\/em>; an expert on horse racing.\u00a0\u00a0Being an expert, by the way, didn\u2019t mean that he got rich \u201cbetting the ponies\u201d, but he did help \u201cset the odds\u201d with his expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the marvels of Ben Dahlman\u2019s life, was that he was born when the United States was waging war against the Native Americans in the West.\u00a0\u00a0The fastest means of transportation was the railroad, and long distance communication was by letter, or, for shorter messages, telegraph.\u00a0\u00a0The telephone was invented four years before he was born, but wasn\u2019t in use yet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He lived to see the horse drawn trollies down Mitchell Avenue (with strategically placed water troughs &#8211; see photo &#8211;  throughout the city) become gas powered, then electric.\u00a0\u00a0Whole industries like livery stables, \u201cIcemen\u201d delivering for iceboxes, and \u201cMilkmen\u201d delivering daily, disappeared.\u00a0\u00a0The telegraph was replaced by the telephone, then the radio, then the television.\u00a0\u00a0Passenger trains were on the way out when he died in 1967, air transportation and interstate highways took their place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">His lifetime was full of dramatic change.&nbsp;&nbsp;And so is ours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1920\u2019s Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today we have a White House that would have been very familiar in my Grandfather\u2019s \u201chey-day\u201d in the 1920\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0Current US immigration policy is modeled after the one used post-World War I,\u00a0\u00a0when the US was highly restrictive of immigration from anywhere except Northern Europe.\u00a0\u00a0(Of course, we would let folks in from Norway then, too!!). American foreign policy ignored Europe.\u00a0\u00a0We were secure in the belief that the Atlantic and Pacific provided a wall of security against foreign incursions.  They called it &#8220;Fortress America&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">US foreign policy in the twenties was almost constantly engaged with Central and South America, a continuation of the \u201cBanana Wars\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0US military forces were engaged in Nicaragua, Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Honduras.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, the US continued to have border issues with Mexico. We actually launched an invasion of Mexico in 1914, led by General John &#8220;Blackjack&#8221; Pershing. In the 1920\u2019s, those problems continued, often involving immigration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So it shouldn\u2019t be such a surprise that the US military is now nearing a full-on war with Venezuela.\u00a0\u00a0Trump is trying to return to the era when Standard Oil drilled in the Venezuelan jungle, back in 1921.\u00a0\u00a0The President has threatened direct military intervention in Mexico against \u201cnarco-terrorism\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, over ninety men are dead from US attacks on boats supposedly smuggling drugs, perhaps even headed to the United States.\u00a0\u00a0As far as Europe is concerned, the Trump Policy has a familiar name:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cAmerica First\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the same name taken by those who opposed involvement in Europe before both World War I and World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industrial Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Like my grandfather\u2019s era, we are looking at dramatic changes in industry.\u00a0\u00a0The current tariff policies, targeted to bring companies back to the United States; will take decades to, maybe, be successful. (And only if future administrations continue it).\u00a0\u00a0But even if many industries do return to US soil, they won\u2019t bring the \u201cgood old factory\u201d jobs back.\u00a0\u00a0Like a lot of our society, much of the industrialization, from building cars to making tires, is now automated.\u00a0\u00a0But Trump replicates the tariff policies of the 1920\u2019s, with stiff \u201cprotective\u201d tariffs against foreign competition.\u00a0\u00a0Those tariffs helped slow European recovery from World War I, making it more vulnerable to the economic disaster of the Great Depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In fact, the next big change in our lives will be the impact of artificial intelligence on employment.\u00a0\u00a0Think of it this way:\u00a0\u00a0right now, I could \u201cassign\u201d an artificial intelligence program to write this essay comparing the foreign policies of the 1920\u2019s and the 2020\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0It might do a better job.\u00a0\u00a0Last week, I ran into a former teacher who left the classroom to write learning objectives for an educational software developer.\u00a0\u00a0She lost her new job this past year:\u00a0\u00a0AI can do it, without a paycheck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The loss of industrial jobs in the 1970\u2019s and 1980\u2019s had a tremendous impact on American society.\u00a0\u00a0What used to be jobs that paid for a middle class lifestyle, were gone overseas.\u00a0\u00a0Those same jobs are not coming back.\u00a0\u00a0And, with Artificial Intelligence, a whole new class of jobs will go the way of the livery stable, the iceman, the telephone operator or the gas station attendant.\u00a0\u00a0Huge swaths of jobs:\u00a0\u00a0 copy writing, developing educational lesson plans, advertising, basic design and structural development, almost all kinds of information entry and processing; will become an \u201cAI\u201d problem.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cnurse\u201d from your doctor\u2019s office will no longer call with information.\u00a0\u00a0It will be the computer, that doesn\u2019t require health insurance, or weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harding and Coolidge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is the implicit promise of the Trump White House:\u00a0\u00a0we will bring back the \u201chey-days\u201d of the 1950\u2019s, with industrial jobs, and an \u201cidyllic\u201d way of life symbolized by the suburban TV lives of \u201cOzzie and Harriet\u201d and \u201cLeave it to Beaver\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The path he\u00a0\u00a0follows is one blazed by Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover.\u00a0\u00a0They are the \u201cauthors\u201d of the historic actions that Trump finds so promising.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHistory doesn\u2019t repeat itself, but it often rhymes\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And the current \u201crhyme\u201d with the 1920\u2019s ended with the 1930\u2019s:\u00a0\u00a0the Great Depression, the rise of Fascism, and World War II.\u00a0\u00a0We can see the signs already.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0America needs to change the rhyme, the pattern, the rhythm.
