{"id":8264,"date":"2025-12-11T09:11:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T14:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8264"},"modified":"2025-12-11T09:11:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T14:11:38","slug":"the-new-prohibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/12\/11\/the-new-prohibition\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Prohibition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>The saying goes:\u00a0\u00a0History doesn\u2019t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps Mark Twain said it.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a small historic controversy; \u00a0if he didn\u2019t, he should have.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need a Drink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">History has ample evidence that banning something makes it more popular.\u00a0\u00a0The generational example is the great early twentieth century experiment of the United\u00a0\u00a0States, the Eighteenth Amendment. The term that describes the 1920\u2019s is \u201cthe era of Prohibition\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And while the law banned alcohol, society took an entirely different direction.\u00a0\u00a0It was the \u201cRoaring Twenties\u201d. Rather than \u201cbars\u201d, there were \u201cspeakeasys\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Instead of reducing alcohol use, by the end of the era drinking the United States was almost to 70% of pre-Amendment consumption.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What Prohibition did do was take a social behavior that most thought was acceptable, and make it illegal.\u00a0\u00a0But instead of stopping the behavior (though drinking did drop 70% in the beginning), it made \u201ccriminal\u201d behavior acceptable.\u00a0\u00a0By 1933, when the Twenty-First Amendment passed to repeal Prohibition, many of the \u201cheroes\u201d of the era were the providers of illegal booze.\u00a0\u00a0As I used to teach in history class, America was in the depths of the Great Depression and needed a legal drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Prohibition gave us \u201crum runners\u201d and \u201cbootleggers\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The echoes of Prohibition still exist today, a century later.\u00a0\u00a0America\u2019s most popular motorsport, NASCAR, traces it roots to the transport of \u201cmoonshine\u201d. Drivers were able to outrun the \u201crevenuers\u201d with a trunk load of illegal booze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need a \u201chit\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The \u201crhyme\u201d in our history is the banning of marijuana. (A ban notably supported by the alcohol manufacturers:\u00a0\u00a0drink, but don\u2019t get high!).\u00a0\u00a0Recreational use of marijuana was illegal in every state in the Nation until just thirteen years ago.\u00a0\u00a0But, like prohibition; criminalizing recreational use, didn\u2019t reduce the amount of users.\u00a0\u00a0It simply made that \u201ccriminal behavior\u201d acceptable.\u00a0\u00a0We are still in a difficult phase of legality when it comes to marijuana.\u00a0\u00a0Only twenty-four states allow recreational use, while ten still don\u2019t even allow medical usage.\u00a0\u00a0And the Federal government maintains laws against marijuana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But, we all know where the United States will ultimately \u201cland\u201d on marijuana use.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re just not there yet.\u00a0\u00a0Someday history will teach about the end of this prohibition.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Maybe the \u201cjoke\u201d will be, \u201cDonald Trump was President, and we all needed a \u2018hit\u2019\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need a Chat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Many of my \u201cmedia sources\u201d are excited about the Australian experiment.\u00a0\u00a0This week, their Government banned social media sites from their citizens sixteen years old or under.\u00a0\u00a0They include:\u00a0\u00a0Facebook, Tik-Tok, Instagram, You-Tube, Snapchat, Reddit, Snap and Kick.\u00a0\u00a0The law doesn\u2019t punish children for being on the sites, but it threatens the site-owners with massive fines if they are.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There is an enormous amount of talk about the \u201chorrors\u201d of social media, from bullying to body-shaming to fatalities caused by copying \u201cTik-Tok\u201d videos.\u00a0\u00a0And all that is true, it really happens.\u00a0\u00a0But, as Joe Biden would say, \u201chere\u2019s the deal\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0For the vast majority of teens, Australia took a legal, acceptable behavior and essentially criminalized it.\u00a0\u00a0It took the teens most common way of communicating with their peers, and made it \u201cbad\u201d, so \u201cbad\u201d that it had to be banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smarter Than a Teenager<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the vast majority of those teens  know\u00a0\u00a0their primary means of socialization isn\u2019t \u201cbad\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And, being teenagers, they are more likely to not only take risks, but to have a better understanding of how to get around the legal \u201cbans\u201d than those who are trying to enforce it.\u00a0\u00a0What it definitely does, is push the \u201chorrors\u201d of social media deeper, farther away from the adults who might be able to intervene and protect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While the news from Australia currently is about kids complaining about the ban, there also is the quiet under-current of kids who already are finding ways around it.\u00a0\u00a0The new \u201crisk taking\u201d will become the draw, just like the risk taking of going to the speakeasy, or making a buy for that illegal joint.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019m a \u201cBoomer\u201d, with all of the negatives that come from that term.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m so old that video games weren\u2019t part of my childhood. \u201cPong\u201d came out when I was sixteen.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And even I use social media, from Facebook to X to You-Tube.\u00a0\u00a0It seems to me the teen use ought to be more like the teen use of alcohol.\u00a0\u00a0Sure, no one really wants teens to drink.\u00a0\u00a0But we also recognize it\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0\u00a0The decision then becomes, do we make teen drinking so \u201cunacceptable\u201d that a drunk child can\u2019t call home for a ride?\u00a0\u00a0Or do we balance our desire to control, with the reality of teen risk-taking: please call and I\u2019ll come get you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">History shows us that \u201cprohibitions\u201d are doomed to fail.\u00a0\u00a0When they do, the problems still remain.\u00a0\u00a0Without Prohibition, Al Capone doesn\u2019t exist.\u00a0\u00a0Without the marijuana ban, Cheech and Chong were just bad comics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What will the Australian ban create?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The saying goes:\u00a0\u00a0History doesn\u2019t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps Mark Twain said it.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a small historic controversy; \u00a0if he didn\u2019t, he should have.\u00a0\u00a0 Need a Drink?
