{"id":8217,"date":"2025-11-06T09:04:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8217"},"modified":"2025-11-06T09:04:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:04:44","slug":"welcome-back-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/11\/06\/welcome-back-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome Back America"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special Report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When I was a kid, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2NG4nm3HTTs\">NBC Special Report<\/a>\u201d logo and music held a special terror.\u00a0\u00a0From the time I was six, a \u201cSpecial Report\u201d meant risk or tragedy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cSpecial Report\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0missiles in Cuba.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cSpecial Report\u201d Kennedy assassinated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cSpecial Report\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower; dead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And that was all when I was younger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The mid-sixties were worse:\u00a0\u00a0Apollo I burned on the launch pad, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy shot and killed; the summer riots, the Chicago Democratic Convention, Four Dead in Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0It was like a morbid version of\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g\">We Didn\u2019t Start the Fire<\/a>\u201d by Billy Joel.\u00a0\u00a0I still get a special \u201ctwitch\u201d when the \u201cmagic\u201d words are intoned:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<em>We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming for an NBC Special Report<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Who\u2019s dead; what\u2019s crashed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In recent years though, that \u201cspecial report\u201d music has less impact on me.\u00a0\u00a0Now, it\u2019s the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fseKuEKOoLc\">election music<\/a>\u201d that gives me a traumatic reaction.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s weird; I\u2019ve been involved in politics all of my life (at least since I was three).\u00a0\u00a0Elections were exciting; like the final game of football season or the state championships in cross country.\u00a0\u00a0There was always that energy, that magic moment right before election day, when everything is possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stages of Grief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But since November of 2016, \u201celection music\u201d doesn\u2019t create the same sense of anticipation.\u00a0\u00a0Now, it\u2019s more like the dread of the old \u201cSpecial Report\u201d. It\u2019s been since that long Tuesday night\/Wednesday morning when we discovered that  the polling was wrong and Hillary did not \u201cbreak the final glass ceiling\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For a Democrat like me, it was unimaginable.\u00a0\u00a0And, after going through the stages of \u201cgrief\u201d;\u00a0<strong>Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance\u00a0<\/strong>(maybe never acceptance), we sat and watched President Obama and Michelle, with ultimate dignity, hand the \u201ckeys of the nation\u201d to Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Come to think of it, maybe we never got much past the \u201canger\u201d stage of grief.\u00a0\u00a0And that anger came out in record strength in 2018, when Democrats regained control of the Congress, and stood up to Trump\u2019s demands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2020 there was excited anticipation for the vote.\u00a0\u00a0But there was still that lurking dread that we might have to relive 2016 again.\u00a0\u00a0So it was with relief rather than joy that we accepted the results of the Biden Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0It took four days, until Saturday, to be sure Trump was \u201cover\u201d. Besides, we were in the throes of Covid and celebration was a mostly solitary activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But then there was a \u201creturn to normalcy\u201d; perhaps too quickly.\u00a0\u00a0We grew complacent in the \u201cregular order\u201d, the \u201cnorms\u201d of politics and government.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We thought it was 2012, not 2024.\u00a0\u00a0I would say that many Americans underestimated the power, the attraction, and the desperation that drove Donald Trump back into the Presidency. I surely did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Again the polls mislead us.\u00a0\u00a0Kamala Harris lost every swing state, and the disbelief of November 2016 came crashing back.\u00a0\u00a0We knew that this time, there were no guardrails or norms, that if Donald Trump was \u201crestrained\u201d back in 2017, he wouldn\u2019t be now.\u00a0\u00a0There would never be an \u201cacceptance\u201d phase in this grief; we were trapped in \u201cdepression\u201d, watching the democracy we loved almost instantly altered beyond recognition.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Music Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Tuesday night the \u201celection music\u201d played once again.\u00a0\u00a0Depression fiercely guards against false hope.\u00a0\u00a0Allowing that would make the \u201cfall\u201d even worse.\u00a0\u00a0So Tuesday\u2019s MSNBC (MSNOW??) no longer elicits joy and excitement.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, it serves as a warning of bad news to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But that didn\u2019t happen. Tuesday was a resounding Democratic victory, from New Jersey to California,\u00a0\u00a0from Pennsylvania to ruby-red Mississippi.\u00a0\u00a0Sherrill won in New Jersey, Mamdani\u00a0\u00a0won New York, Spanberger won Virginia, and the California re-districting amendment passed overwhelmingly.\u00a0\u00a0Even in the Virginia Attorney General race the Democrat won.\u00a0\u00a0Jay Jones, hamstrung by a stupid text sent three years ago, (in the middle of a gun control debate, he suggested that the Republican Assembly leader should get \u201cbullets to the head\u201d).  He still pulled off a narrow victory over the Republican incumbent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So what does this all mean?\u00a0\u00a0Trumpism, MAGAism isn\u2019t over.\u00a0\u00a0The battle will continue day-to-day; by Governors, the Democratic minority in the Congress, and in the Courts. And by \u201ceveryday Americans\u201d (I hate that phrase) who will to stand for their beliefs and march in the streets.\u00a0\u00a0But there is a twinkling \u201cnew dawn\u201d in America.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe the dread of \u201celection music\u201d will return to an anticipation of success.\u00a0\u00a0Or, as Winston Churchill so loquaciously put it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Now this is not the end.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>It is not even the beginning of the end.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special Report When I was a kid, the \u201cNBC Special Report\u201d logo and music held a special terror.\u00a0\u00a0From the time I was six, a \u201cSpecial Report\u201d meant risk or tragedy.\u00a0\u00a0 And that was all when I was younger.
