{"id":8193,"date":"2025-10-20T10:10:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T14:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8193"},"modified":"2025-10-20T10:10:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T14:10:16","slug":"feeling-the-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/10\/20\/feeling-the-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeling the Pain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">\u201c<em>Where Oh Where, Is Congress tonight?\u00a0\u00a0Why did you leave us here all alone?\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve searched the world over looking for Government, but you\u2019re dodging problems, so \u2018poof\u2019 you is gone.<\/em>&#8221;   <em>Borrowed from Ronnie Milsap and the TV show\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DS4LPNxJtFI\">Hee Haw<\/a>, &#8211; 1977.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Speaker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has a dilemma.\u00a0\u00a0He can stay in Washington, refusing to negotiate with Democrats and look helpless at the government closure.\u00a0\u00a0Or he can send his GOP majority home, so the Democrats don\u2019t have anyone to talk to (and his own majority party won\u2019t pressure the Speaker to actually do something). It\u2019s Fall Break for the MAGA members, as their Republican boycott of the House is on its fifth week.\u00a0\u00a0No undergrad ever had it so good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Speaker of the House is second in line to be President, right after the Vice President.\u00a0\u00a0When Nancy Pelosi held the gavel, she was the most powerful woman in the Nation, able to run her slim majority with an iron hand in a velvet glove.\u00a0\u00a0Many would argue that she was so powerful that she brought down her own President, Joe Biden, only weeks before the Democratic Convention in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0Pelosi, like her or not, was a giant; diminutive Johnson, not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Johnson deeply understands that he holds his job at the whim of Donald Trump.\u00a0\u00a0As long as he toes the Trump line, the President remains in support.\u00a0\u00a0But should Johnson actually try to do something outside of Trump\u2019s dominion, he could go the way of other \u201cformer\u201d Republicans leaders like Kevin McCarthy.\u00a0\u00a0As the Washington saying goes:\u00a0\u00a0it will be time to go &#8220;write your book&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Trump Wants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So what does Trump want?\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s pretty simple, actually:\u00a0\u00a0to be unfettered by Congressional controls.\u00a0\u00a0Biden struggled to pass legislation, to make deals with \u201cthe other side\u201d to get things done.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s a list: the CHIPS Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan, and the Infrastructure Act.\u00a0\u00a0Trump chooses to govern by executive order.\u00a0\u00a0He wanted his \u201cBig, Beautiful Bill\u201d(BBB), essentially a massive tax cut for the rich, and was able to bully even the fiscal conservatives in the Republican Party who ultimately fell in line.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s all he wanted from Congress, and now that he\u2019s got it, they can remain on \u201cbreak\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Democrats are still fighting the battle of the \u201cBig, Beautiful Bill\u201d, now through the \u201cenabling legislation\u201d, the budget.\u00a0\u00a0They have found the \u201csoft spot\u201d in the Republican plan.\u00a0\u00a0In the next three weeks, health insurance renewal notices will go out nationwide.\u00a0\u00a0And with the funding cuts of the BBB, those bills are going to be a lot higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump was elected by the post-Covid inflation.\u00a0\u00a0He was able to argue that it was \u201cBiden\u2019s fault\u201d (and Harris\u2019s fault too) that prices went so high.\u00a0\u00a0But now, Trump \u201cowns\u201d high prices.\u00a0\u00a0Today, a 16 ounce Ribeye at the local Kroger\u2019s cost $21.99.\u00a0\u00a0Gas prices still hover around $3.00\/gallon.\u00a0\u00a0But if health insurance costs go up dramatically, a lot more Americans are going to \u201cknow the pain\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Does Trump care:\u00a0\u00a0probably not.\u00a0\u00a0He doesn\u2019t have to run for election again.\u00a0\u00a0(<em>OK, there\u2019s the whole \u201cthird term\u201d thing, but if he\u2019s going to ignore the Constitution, then clearly finding enough votes to win won\u2019t be the problem).\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>But all those vacationing Republican members of Congress do.\u00a0\u00a0And the pressure is growing on them to come on back to DC, and work out a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excuses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can hear it in Johnson\u2019s excuses.\u00a0\u00a0First it was all about \u201chealth care for illegals\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0After that was disproved, then it was all about \u201chealth care for folks who don\u2019t work\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Now that\u2019s kind of disappearing as well.\u00a0\u00a0This week their tactic is; \u201cDemocrats made the Affordable Care Act, and it was never affordable.\u00a0\u00a0Now Republicans have to fix it\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019ve been trying to \u201cfix\u201d the ACA since 2012, with no success.\u00a0\u00a0(Facts are: Democrats made the Affordable Care Act with multiple sources of funding, which Republicans and the Republican Supreme Court consistently cut).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the political pressure of those insurance bills is unrelenting.\u00a0\u00a0John Thune, the Republican Senate Majority Leader, is now hinting that it\u2019s time to \u201cnegotiate\u201d with Democrats.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s really a simple deal:\u00a0\u00a0it takes sixty votes to get the budget through the Senate.\u00a0\u00a0All fifty-three Republicans voting leaves them seven votes short.\u00a0\u00a0Three Senators, two Democrats and an Independent have \u201ccrossed over\u201d, leaving Republicans\u00a0\u00a0still in need of four votes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Momentum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The original \u201cdemand\u201d was that the Democrats \u201chave to vote\u201d for the budget to re-open the Government.\u00a0\u00a0But the onus is on the majority to find the requisite votes.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s what politics is all about, making a deal.\u00a0\u00a0And even if the Senate reaches a compromise (likely to happen), then the House would have to agree (not so likely).\u00a0\u00a0But the biggest problem is that neither Thune nor Johnson are free to negotiate, without the permission of Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It&#8217;s October 20<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0The shutdown began on October 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s major economic ramifications of a massive Federal workforce not getting paid, and most not even able to continue doing their jobs.\u00a0\u00a0The United States is like a big oceangoing passenger ship.\u00a0\u00a0It can coast for a long time without engines, simply on momentum.\u00a0\u00a0But it will gradually slow to a stop, and so will the American government, with huge economic impact.\u00a0\u00a0And meanwhile, the Republican members of Congress hide out at home, and the American people dread going to the mailbox.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That insurance bill is going to hurt, and vacationing GOP Congressmen and Senators are likely to feel the pain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhere Oh Where, Is Congress tonight?\u00a0\u00a0Why did you leave us here all alone?\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve searched the world over looking for Government, but you\u2019re dodging problems, so \u2018poof\u2019 you is gone.&#8221;
