{"id":8189,"date":"2025-10-17T10:09:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8189"},"modified":"2025-10-19T04:03:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T08:03:38","slug":"strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/10\/17\/strike\/","title":{"rendered":"STRIKE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resistance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The resistance is struggling.&nbsp;&nbsp;I can tell, by the whispered conversation in the hallway; by the loud yawn from the staff, waiting to close an empty room.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s faltering:&nbsp;&nbsp;what started out with a vengeance at the beginning of the Trump Administration has slowed.&nbsp;&nbsp;To be truthful, it is low on fuel, almost adrift in a terrifying sea of authoritarianism.&nbsp;&nbsp;What led to this failure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In part, it is fear.&nbsp;&nbsp;Not the \u201cfear itself\u201d, Franklin Roosevelt kind of fear, but real fear, practical fear.&nbsp;&nbsp;What will happen to my job, my family, my life?&nbsp;&nbsp;If I am a \u201cresistor\u201d, will the secret police, dressed in camo and masks, come to my home?  The black helicopters that the crazies on the \u201cother side\u201d always feared, are now theirs.&nbsp;&nbsp;The \u201cinmates are in charge of the asylum\u201d. Ask those poor folks in Chicago, with masked agents fast roping onto their roof.&nbsp;&nbsp;Will my neighbors, just as strong in the belief of the sacredness of their cause, turn on me?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunshine Patriots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In February it seemed like a reasonable risk, a sacrifice that American citizens were obligated to make.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thomas Paine, the Conscience of the American Revolution, said it this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTHESE are the times that try men&#8217;s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It always sounded so compelling.&nbsp;&nbsp;But now we know what the \u201csummer soldier, the sunshine patriot\u201d was thinking.&nbsp;&nbsp;The alternate path, shrinking from the crisis and hiding from the obligation, looks so easy, so safe.&nbsp;&nbsp;People are threatened.&nbsp;&nbsp;They lost their jobs, moved their homes, were forced to hide.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some have even died.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s real, now.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s easy to \u201cshrink\u201d, to \u201cstay small\u201d and hope the storm will pass over.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let someone else be the one that stands.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Came for Me<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>First they came for the Communists.<br \/>And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Communist.<br \/>Then they came for the Socialists.<br \/>And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Socialist.<br \/>Then they came for the trade unionists.<br \/>And I did not speak out, Because I was not a trade unionist.<br \/>Then they came for the Jews.<br \/>And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Jew.<br \/>Then they came for me.<br \/>And there was no one left&nbsp;To speak out for me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German Pastor Martin Neim\u00f6ller wrote this famous poem, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hmd.org.uk\/resource\/first-they-came-by-pastor-martin-niemoller\/\">First They Came<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It spoke of the inevitable outcome of authoritarian rule, spreading from \u201ceasy\u201d targets to everyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even as a Lutheran Pastor and Nazi sympathizer before World War II, Neim\u00f6ller himself ended up in a Nazi concentration camp.&nbsp;&nbsp;He did not \u201cshrink\u201d enough, and the whirlwind finally took him in its grasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s the point.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ultimately, we will all get swept up by the \u201csecret police\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;First they came for the migrants, and I wasn\u2019t a migrant so I didn\u2019t speak out.&nbsp;&nbsp;It isn\u2019t far-fetched at all to see that, in the end, they will come for me.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fatigue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Paine again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhatever is my right as a man is also the right of another; and it becomes my duty to guarantee as well as to possess.&nbsp;Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must,<\/em> <em>like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fear and fatigue go hand in hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was easy to stand up in April, fresh from defeat and hoping to turn the tide.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now it\u2019s October, and the drip-drip-drip of authoritarian action has worn us down.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some are choosing to \u201cgo small\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Choice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The point:&nbsp;&nbsp;we really don\u2019t have that choice.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We must resist, now.&nbsp;&nbsp;We must fight this fight now, or we will certainly have to fight it later when the authoritarian forces gain even more power.&nbsp;&nbsp;General Douglas MacArthur is not even on my top ten list of \u201cfavorite\u201d military leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a General\/Politician, a bad mix of power and ego.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, like most politicians, he had a great speech writer.&nbsp;&nbsp;And when he came back to the Philippines to fight the Japanese conquerors, he said, \u201c<em>I Have Returned<\/em>\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;And he called on the Filipino people to join him in his quest:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026For your homes and hearths, strike! For future generations of your sons and daughters, strike! In the name of your sacred dead, strike! Let no heart be faint.
