{"id":8185,"date":"2025-10-14T09:40:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8185"},"modified":"2025-10-14T09:40:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:40:46","slug":"fiddle-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/10\/14\/fiddle-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiddle About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>Fiddle About \u2013 from the Rock Opera Tommy by the Who<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nixon&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our internet-fueled world moves swiftly.\u00a0\u00a0Yesterday, the least likely President of all achieved a peace deal in the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s an old political phrase, \u201cNixon went to China\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s ironic, because Nixon made his political \u201cbones\u201d by being a rabid anti-Communist.\u00a0\u00a0So when Nixon really did go to China, to sit with arch-Communists Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, he may have been the only American politician with the political ability to do so.\u00a0\u00a0Trump is much the same. Perhaps, for the first time, he really was the \u201conly one\u201d who could solve the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0I hope it lasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile the United States Government remains \u201ctechnically\u201d closed.\u00a0\u00a0Congress has failed to reach a budget agreement, now going on for two weeks.\u00a0\u00a0And because there is no budget, there is no money available to continue government functions.\u00a0\u00a0That used to be a \u201cHUGE\u201d deal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Remember the late 1990\u2019s, when the government shutdown, and all the normal White House staffers were sent home.\u00a0\u00a0Only the senior advisors, and the unpaid interns remained to continue \u201crunning\u201d the government.\u00a0\u00a0One of those interns, a twenty-one year old woman, brought pizza for the senior staff, and ended up having sex with the President. \u00a0We remember how that ended.\u00a0\u00a0As a high school senior government teacher, I had to dance around the meaning of the word \u201cis\u201d, and the meaning of the word \u201csex\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abnormal Times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I don\u2019t see any \u201cfurloughs\u201d in the White House.\u00a0\u00a0They seem to be ignoring all of the \u201ctrappings\u201d of a Government shutdown.\u00a0\u00a0Probably safer for the young interns there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In \u201cnormal times\u201d, there would be on-going negotiations between the majority leaders and minority leaders in the Congress, and a President trying to get the doors open again.\u00a0\u00a0But these are not normal times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump left to go to the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0House Speaker Johnson refuses to talk to Minority Leader Jefferies, and won&#8217;t  allow the House to come back into session.\u00a0\u00a0He won\u2019t even swear-in a newly elected Congresswoman from Arizona. (That might have something to do with a House move to force the Justice Department to reveal the \u201centire\u201d EPSTEIN FILE). And while the Senate is at least in session, they don\u2019t seem to be talking either.\u00a0\u00a0This shutdown feels semi-permanent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blame Game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At first, Republicans blamed the shutdown on Democrats wanting to give \u201cundocumented migrants health care\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But the reality of Federal law snuffed out that argument. Law prohibits spending Federal money on the undocumented, with an exception for hospital reimbursement for lifesaving care.\u00a0\u00a0When that  fell apart, the Republicans simply said that they won&#8217;t spend the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, Democrats are waiting for the November insurance bills to hit American kitchen tables.\u00a0\u00a0The expected increases, Dems hope, will force Republicans to start negotiating.\u00a0\u00a0Pressure has to come from somewhere, and Democrats hope the Republican base will be shocked by the rising costs, and start to push their leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">American leaders are \u201cfiddling about\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Not much is getting done in Congress, and the President seems pleased to be unfettered with the legal niceties of legislative approval.\u00a0\u00a0So what\u2019s the problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real World Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Government workers are facing their first payday without a check.\u00a0\u00a0Their last full payment was on October 1.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s 1.6 million workers in the United States, a big chunk of the economy that will be unable to spend for rent and food.\u00a0\u00a0There are government services curtailed:\u00a0\u00a0social security checks will go out, but processing of new or changed social security benefits is delayed.\u00a0\u00a0TSA agents and FAA air-traffic controllers are required to work \u2013 but they aren\u2019t getting paid.\u00a0\u00a0National Parks remain open, but unsupervised, and un-serviced (think trash and restrooms).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When will the shutdown end?\u00a0\u00a0When the pressure grows so great on the politicians that they are required to talk to each other.\u00a0\u00a0Will that be when the Republican base starts screaming about insurance, or when the pressure on any four Democratic Senators who \u201chold the line\u201d of the shutdown gets so bad, that they decide to fold.\u00a0\u00a0Pennsylvania\u2019s John Fetterman and Nevada\u2019s Catherine Cortez-Masto, along with Maine Independent Angus King, already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We\u2019d expect bleary-eyed Senators to be talking all night.\u00a0\u00a0In other times, we\u2019d have a President locking everyone in a White House conference room until they came out with a deal.\u00a0\u00a0But today, there seems to be no appetite for negotiations, and the Federal doors remain closed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s just another sign of our polarized times; so divided, that we can\u2019t even talk about it.
