Song for this essay – For What It\u2019s Worth<\/a> \u2013 Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spirit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I am a terrorist.\u00a0\u00a0I hate America. I am, believe or not, against fascism.\u00a0\u00a0I guess that makes me ANTIFA (anti-fascist).\u00a0\u00a0At least, that\u2019s what the President and his MAGA-Republicans in Washington are telling me.\u00a0\u00a0Next Saturday, many Americans will protest against the fascist\/authoritarian actions of the Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0My family and friends and my spirit will be marching with them.\u00a0\u00a0The Republican leaders may call them terrorists and America haters, but those marching are acting in the spirit of America, as old as the Boston Tea Party, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s get a few of things straight.  I\u2019m working on Saturday, at an all-day Cross Country meet, and I will be unable to join the \u201cNo Kings\u201d march here in Central Ohio.  And that\u2019s annoying, but a commitment I made months ago, before the march was announced.  While I\u2019ll wear the \u201cblack and white\u201d of track official on top, underneath, nearer my heart, will be a \u201cNo Kings\u201d T-shirt.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The government cannot makes laws, or act, against the freedom of political expression.  They cannot make laws or act against the right to assemble.  And, they cannot deny the right of citizens to petition the government for redress of grievances.  If those words all sound familiar, they should.  It\u2019s the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, three of the five guaranteed restrictions on the Government (religion and the press are the other two). It\u2019s the first thing the Founding Fathers added to the original document.  So citizens gathering in the public \u201csquare\u201d, speaking out against government action, and asking for change, are directly protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I participated in the first \u201cNo Kings\u201d March last spring.  It was a picture of America.  There were \u201cradicals\u201d, who want dramatic change, even Socialists (Oh MY!!).  There were little kids, running around in red-white-and-blue t-shirts.  I saw lots of young folks who were driven to the street by the injustice they saw on their phone screens every night.  And, there were a lot of \u201cBoomers\u201d, my generation.  So what are all of those Medicare recipients doing out in the street, \u201c\u2026singing songs and carrying signs\u201d? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boomer Guilt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The answer is pretty simple.  We know what America should be, and we know what America looks like right now.  Us \u201cBoomers\u201d feel an obligation (and guilt) that the country we had so much hope for descended so quickly into the authoritarian abyss we see today.  We owe the next generations a better place. Our country, that just a few short months ago seemed \u201c\u2026on the long arc of the moral universe, bending towards justice\u201d is now bending backwards.  We need to straighten that arc out, again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, deep in the \u201cBoomer Memory\u201d (maybe easier to remember than the location of our glasses, phone and car keys) are the marches of our youth.\u00a0\u00a0They (the Government) didn\u2019t want us out in the streets then either, back in the 1960\u2019s and early 70\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0We marched against a useless war, and called for political change.\u00a0\u00a0We wanted civil rights for all Americans, regardless of the color of their skin.\u00a0\u00a0We learned that civil \u201caction\u201d can lead to change, even with the most conservative leaders like President Nixon or Governor Rhodes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Really, I want to get a \u201cfrog suit\u201d and join the protests in Portland.  I want to dance in the streets in front of the ICE \u201cagents\u201d (are they really trained Federal officers, or just contracted thugs?).  If that\u2019s what ANTIFA does, I\u2019m all-in.  And if the Federal Government decides to attack the Frogs, as \u201cdangerous interference with ICE operations\u201d, then who is the real loser in that encounter?  The frog dancers, or the bullies with zip-tie handcuffs, trying to bind frog-arms?  Does Portland really need the National Guard to \u201cput-down\u201d a costumed protest?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all seriousness, the United States is in crisis.\u00a0\u00a0The President is sending armed troops into American cities without the \u201cconsent of the governed\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Rumors of this Administration actually invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807, and using the regular US military in the streets of American cities, abound.\u00a0\u00a0The President chooses \u201ccrime\u201d as his excuse for action.\u00a0\u00a0But \u201ccrime\u201d is down in all of those cities, and, in fact, is \u201cup\u201d in Republican \u201ccontrolled\u201d areas.\u00a0\u00a0And what crime are the frog dancers committing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boiling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s a whole scenario of Federal suppression of the First Amendment rights that seems to be on the table.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a \u201cboiling frog\u201d analogy:\u00a0\u00a0the more Americans get accustomed to seeing troops in the streets, cities governed by martial law, and direct Federal intervention, the more likely it is that those same troops will \u201cprotect\u201d the elections in 2026.\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019ll make sure that the vote is \u201cprotected\u201d from opposition. Especially those costumed protestors mocking ICE in Portland.\u00a0\u00a0By the time the general citizenry realizes what\u2019s happened, it might be too late. And then, democracy itself will be cooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 18th<\/sup>\u00a0is another opportunity for millions of Americans to \u201cpetition the Government for redress of grievances\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0As Lincoln said, \u201cIt is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And if that threatens the MAGA-Republicans:\u00a0\u00a0maybe they should look closer at what\u00a0they<\/span>\u00a0are doing to America.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
