{"id":8170,"date":"2025-10-05T10:19:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T14:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8170"},"modified":"2025-10-05T10:19:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T14:19:21","slug":"war-what-is-it-good-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/10\/05\/war-what-is-it-good-for\/","title":{"rendered":"War &#8211; What Is It Good For?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><em>\u201cI said, war, huh<\/em><em>,&nbsp;What is it good for?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><em>&nbsp;Absolutely nothing, say it again\u2026\u201d \u2013 War, The Temptations<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declaring War<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ask Donald Trump:\u00a0\u00a0the United States is at \u201cwar\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We are at \u201cwar\u201d with narco-terrorism.\u00a0\u00a0We are at \u201cwar\u201d with domestic \u201cleft\u201d extremists.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, we are at \u201cwar\u201d with undocumented migrants and on \u201ccrime\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The Executive Branch of the American Constitutional Government is \u201cdeclaring\u201d War after War, War, and taking action based on those \u201cdeclarations\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ICE, the \u201cfront line\u201d in the \u201cwar on the undocumented\u201d, is expanding from 6500 to 16500 agents.\u00a0\u00a0The President is Federalizing the National Guard in certain \u201cBlue\u201d states, Oregon, Illinois, and California, in order to \u201ccontrol the streets\u201d of \u201cDemocrat Run\u201d cities.\u00a0\u00a0The US military is blowing up ships on the high seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Those of us raised on \u201cSchool House Rock\u201d, are a little confused.\u00a0\u00a0We thought that the United States Constitution granted the power to declare war to the Congress (Article I, Section 8, Clause 11), not to the President.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s not Congress making all these \u201cdeclarations\u201d, it Donald Trump and his minions, Stephen Miller or Russell Vought.\u00a0\u00a0America is at War, and President Trump is \u201cleading us\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heritage Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It isn\u2019t that the President can\u2019t take action against drugs.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019ve been \u201cwaging\u201d war against drugs for half a century.  Richard Nixon \u201cdeclared war\u201d on drugs in June of 1971.\u00a0\u00a0But Nixon\u2019s \u201cdeclaration\u201d at a press conference was \u201csymbolic\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Nixon really wasn\u2019t planning on waging war, he was simply emphasizing a White House focus on combatting drug use. (In a half century that war continues to be lost).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the Trump Administration has a different \u201cattitude\u201d about the word, \u201cwar\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s technical, based on the Constitution and recent law. And it&#8217;s important to consider as we wage war against such dangerous \u201cundocumented criminal hotbeds\u201d as Chicago and Portland.\u00a0\u00a0(Even the far-right fear of \u201cblack helicopters\u201d is now reality, as masked military-like agents fast-roped down onto a Chicago apartment building).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It all started in the heartbeat of right-wing political thought, the Heritage Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0When the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> Insurrection ended, those \u201cthinkers\u201d were faced with ultimate failure.\u00a0\u00a0Joe Biden was going to be President, and the House and Senate were Democratic.\u00a0\u00a0After four years of the first Trump Administration they were unable to change America to what they wanted, and now Democrats were bringing things \u201cback to normal\u201d once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They had years of political \u201cexile\u201d to think through a \u201cdo-over\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0What if they got a second chance to run America?\u00a0\u00a0What could they do differently to really change the fundamental structure of the American government, and make America \u201cGreat\u201d (White?) again?\u00a0\u00a0And while they publicly pressed a \u201cstates\u2019 rights\u201d agenda (ask the Governor of Texas), privately they were developing a whole theory based around a \u201cunitary executive\u201d, that gave the President unprecedented power and control over the entire Federal government.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They were even willing to risk extending some of that power to Joe Biden.\u00a0\u00a0The right-wing majority on the Supreme Court created a brand new Presidential perk during the Biden Administration; absolute immunity from prosecution for any \u201cofficial act\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Biden didn\u2019t take advantage of a power he didn\u2019t want or believe in, but if Trump could get back in, that could \u201cexcuse\u201d any action he took.\u00a0\u00a0It simply had to be \u201cofficial\u201d, and nothing is more official than an \u201cExecutive Order\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Congress still has the power to declare war.\u00a0\u00a0But, Congress hasn\u2019t \u201cdeclared war\u201d since the days after Pearl Harbor in 1941.\u00a0\u00a0Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Lebanon, the invasion of Panama, the Persian Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, all took place without declaration, but simply with Congressional authority ceded to the President.\u00a0\u00a0The AUMF (authorization of use of military force) from 9-11 is still in effect, twenty-four years later.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s a specific reason that the Trump Administration uses the words \u201cnarco-terrorism\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Terrorism is a defined term in the AUMF, so the President can claim to take \u201capproved\u201d war action against \u201cnarco-terrorists\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">War gives the President expanded authorities.\u00a0\u00a0During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, the right to have a hearing in court if arrested, for some parts of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0During the Second World War, Roosevelt rounded up American citizens of Japanese descent and put them in \u201crelocation\u201d camps.\u00a0Those clear violations of citizenship rights were tolerated, because \u201cwe were at war\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The geniuses at the Heritage Foundation want to expand those Presidential War powers even farther; against undocumented migrants, and now, against any opposition to their political plans.\u00a0\u00a0We keep hearing the words \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d applied to folks like George Soros and the mysterious \u201cANTIFA\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The President always claims extraordinary powers in times of war.\u00a0\u00a0The other American institutions, Congress and the Courts, have recognized the need to \u201cact swiftly\u201d in wartime, assuming the risk of mistakes that swift action might entail.\u00a0\u00a0But the \u201cnorm\u201d has always been to retract those powers after the crisis was over.\u00a0\u00a0Today, the Heritage scholars are reversing that trend, creating issue after issue where \u201cwar powers\u201d are given to the President.\u00a0\u00a0Congress is unwilling to stand up for themselves, and the Supreme Court majority\u00a0\u00a0is aligned with the Heritage views.\u00a0\u00a0And it doesn\u2019t help that Congress has declared the government, and themselves, \u201cclosed\u201d.
