Hubris<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I just caught a glimpse of Secretary of \u201cWar\u201d Hegseth preaching to the top command echelon of the United States military.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ll call it what it is:\u00a0\u00a0pure hubris.\u00a0\u00a0This relatively young man, a combat veteran himself (but most qualified for his current assignment by his \u201cdangerous\u201d Fox News Weekend duties) demanded that ALL of the leaders of the military, from every branch, come to him.\u00a0\u00a0He didn\u2019t want a video link, and he couldn\u2019t send an email.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, he needed \u201cbutts in seats\u201d in Quantico, Virginia, regardless that those leaders had to travel from all over the world. In spite of the literally millions of dollars this exercise in ego cost America, he required them to leave their incredibly important posts.\u00a0\u00a0The US Armed Forces is publicly \u201cdeactivated\u201d, the American military threat-response compromised, for Pete, because he wanted their attention, RIGHT NOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warrior Ethos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pete is a \u201ctrue believer\u201d in the \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s all the rage in the white, male, thirty-something set (though Pete himself is forty-five).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s modeled from what they call \u201cThe Teams\u201d, the near mythical Special Forces who do America\u2019s \u201cdirty work\u201d throughout the world .\u00a0\u00a0Most Americans are familiar with Seal Team Six, who \u201ctook out\u201d Osama Bin Laden back in the Obama Administration.\u00a0\u00a0But younger men know them better from video games like \u201cCall of Duty\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hegseth didn\u2019t want to lead a \u201cDefense\u201d Department.\u00a0\u00a0He wants to be an offensive guy, who gets it; that battles are dirty, and takes\u00a0\u201ctough guys\u201d to win out.\u00a0\u00a0He sees the military as a brotherhood, almost a Priesthood of dedicated men who put on the vestments of the uniform and sacrifice themselves for the Nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a \u201cwar\u201d out there, so we should be a \u201cWar\u201d department.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s all kind of \u201cGeorge Patton\u201d thing. That\u2019s for the Boomers who remember George C Scott\u2019s opening monologue in the movie \u201cPatton<\/a>\u201d, the one that President Nixon watched to steel himself for military decisions.\u00a0\u00a0Hegseth (and Trump) both spoke in front of a US Flag\u00a0backdrop today, identical to the movie set. That’s not a coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brilliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And there is a place for Warriors in the \u201cWar\u201d Department.\u00a0\u00a0But to go back in our history for a moment, Patton is a great example.\u00a0\u00a0He was a \u201cWarrior\u201d in the Hegseth model.\u00a0\u00a0He used profanity to make himself a \u201ccommon guy\u201d like his soldiers. Hegseth just told the mass of Generals in front of him, \u201cFAFO\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He used initials.\u00a0\u00a0(I\u2019d expect a \u201creal\u201d Warrior would just say it: \u201cFuck Around and Find Out\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0Patton led forces successfully into battle. He even mixed an almost childlike Christian religious devotion with his Warrior ethos.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what is easy to forget is that Patton was a tool (yes in both ways).\u00a0\u00a0He was managed by two of the greatest military leaders of any time, Generals Dwight Eisenhower and George Marshall.\u00a0\u00a0Neither of them were part of some physical \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, General Douglas MacArthur called Eisenhower, \u201c\u2026the best clerk I ever had\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Marshall and Eisenhower were brilliant organizers, able to put personnel, materiel, and strategy together to win World War II.\u00a0\u00a0Sure, Patton had his part, but he wasn\u2019t \u201ccritical\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He was the \u201cpoint\u201d of one spear, of the thousands of spears that the brilliant organizers had to put in place to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Defense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We need \u201cWarriors\u201d in the military.\u00a0\u00a0We also need \u201cProgrammers\u201d and \u201cGuidance Specialists\u201d and \u201cSupply Clerks\u201d and \u201cNuclear Engineers\u201d and \u201cResearch Analysts\u201d and “Strategists”. And, to put it bluntly, it doesn\u2019t require testicles to be any of those things.\u00a0\u00a0This \u201cbrotherhood\u201d concept is based on a mythical, video game view of what American defense is all about.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not real \u2013 and never really has been.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0George Washington as a young man was a Warrior.\u00a0\u00a0But, during the American Revolution, he was a strategist, willing to retreat, give away key cities like New York and Philadelphia, and even be a \u201cpolitician\u201d to win the war.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m sure that there are \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d Generals in the military, who are proud of what \u201cyoung Pete\u201d is doing.\u00a0\u00a0And I\u2019m also sure there are generals who recognize that in our modern world, \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d isn\u2019t the key need in American defense.\u00a0\u00a0What is needed:\u00a0\u00a0an ability to use all the \u201ctools\u201d available, men and women of all kinds, physically strong or mentally adept or both.\u00a0\u00a0It was the “odd man” in his bathrobe who \u201cwon\u201d the Battle of Midway, detecting the Japanese code for Midway Island.\u00a0\u00a0It was the gay man who broke the Enigma code for Great Britain. And,\u00a0it was courageous women, like my own mother, who led the fight in Nazi occupied Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They wouldn\u2019t be part of Pete\u2019s vision of the \u201cbrotherhood\u201d.  They aren\u2019t welcome in Pete\u2019s military today.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is a big loss for America.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
