Pasteur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We know the great French scientist of the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0Century, Louis Pasteur, as one of the fathers of \u201cgerm theory\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He created the rabies vaccine, preventing certain death from the bites of rabid animals.\u00a0\u00a0And, he was a practical man.\u00a0\u00a0He developed vaccinations for not just rabies, but also anthrax and cholera.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was a child, I read the \u201cLandmark Book\u201d of Louis Pasteur. He occasionally bent the rules of \u201cscience\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It was only after brief experimentation (fifty dogs) that Pasteur applied his rabies vaccination to a human. He used it on nine-year old Joseph Meister, badly mauled by a rabid dog.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, Pasteur didn\u2019t have a medical license, and so he supervised the process as the actual injections were made by a doctor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it was really a no-lose situation \u2013 if the boy developed rabies it would surely kill him \u2013 it certainly wasn\u2019t up to scientific standards even then.\u00a0\u00a0But the boy survived, and rabies vaccinations today are improved from the original, incredibly painful, seventeen shot series\u00a0\u00a0(one per day) in the stomach.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s now\u00a0\u00a0four or five shots in the arm, similar in pain to tetanus shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germ Theory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pasteur applied his germ theory to prevention of disease.\u00a0\u00a0So, he invented the process named after him, pasteurization.\u00a0\u00a0It raised the temperature of a product, such as milk (and since he was French, wine of course) to kill bacteria.\u00a0\u00a0This allowed for not only safer products, but also increased the shelf life.\u00a0\u00a0Diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, and Q fever were prevented, as well as food poisoning from salmonella, listeria,\u00a0\u00a0and Escherichia coli (Michigan<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0That was in the 1860\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, unless you grew up on a dairy farm and took a \u201cstraight shot\u201d after milking,\u00a0\u00a0all the milk we consume is pasteurized.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And looking at the disease list above, it\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liberty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This week, some Republicans in the Ohio State Legislature are proposing to legalize raw milk production for human consumption.\u00a0\u00a0One of the co-sponsors of the legislation, Kellie Deeter of Norwalk, says the quiet part out-loud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m personally not a raw milk advocate; I’m a liberty advocate,<\/em>” Deeter said. “As long as people understand what they’re consuming<\/em>,\u201d (Newark Advocate<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s a problem.  \u201cIn Florida, 21 people \u2014 including six children younger than 10 \u2014 have suffered infections since January after drinking raw milk from a dairy farm.\u201d(Newark Advocate<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the new MAGA-Republican \u201cmantra\u201d; freedom over science.\u00a0\u00a0So what if non-pasteurized milk can cause all of the diseases.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s all about the \u201cliberty\u201d to make dangerous choices for themselves, their children and even unborn children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raw, unpasteurized milk has a cult-like following in some health food circles.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s one of the recommendations from Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr as part of his \u201cMAHA\u201d (Make America Healthy Again) program.\u00a0Raw milk advocates even have a slick website put together, the\u00a0Raw Milk Institute<\/a>, extolling the virtues of raw milk, and displaying pictures of cute children pouring glasses of it. They claim it\u2019s \u201cjust like human breast milk\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Science <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Science proves it.\u00a0\u00a0Pasteur fixed it, 165 years ago.\u00a0\u00a0But today, science doesn\u2019t \u201ccount\u201d anymore.\u00a0\u00a0After all, there\u2019s a website, and there\u2019s folks with letters after their names (MD, DVM, PhD, MS) that say raw milk\u2019s great!! So who needs to listen to science?\u00a0\u00a0Like pharmaceuticals, they claim it\u2019s \u201cBig Dairy\u201d that\u2019s keeping the “wonder” of raw milk from American consumers; forcing us to drink\u00a0cheap, unsanitary, long-shelf-life \u201cCAFO\u201d milk (CAFO \u2013 Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, a \u201cdirty word\u201d for big dairy farms).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the so-called mystery of our time, the \u201cspecter\u201d of big business, keeping health away from us regular folks in order to sustain their profits\u00a0And while there may be a kernel of truth in that, there\u2019s also a reality:\u00a0\u00a0a product that has known dangers shouldn\u2019t be marketed as a \u201cwonder food\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Remember, cigarettes in the 1930\u2019s were \u201cphysician tested and approved!\u201d (Healio<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Even more, good public health should do whatever it can to mitigate risks.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not just common sense, but financially sound.\u00a0\u00a0Treating folks who get sick costs all of us in one way or another.\u00a0\u00a0If public health can prevent those expenses, it makes all health care a little bit cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
