{"id":8090,"date":"2025-08-31T11:07:19","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T15:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8090"},"modified":"2025-08-31T11:07:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T15:07:21","slug":"a-public-duty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/08\/31\/a-public-duty\/","title":{"rendered":"A Public Duty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Childhood Vaccination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s an underlying theme of America today:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cfreedom\u201d versus \u201cthe public good\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The most obvious example is in our ongoing public health crisis about gun death.\u00a0\u00a0One side correctly points out the Second Amendment.  It states:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c\u2026the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0They want to end the conversation right there.\u00a0\u00a0(Of course, there\u2019s the \u201cmagic \u2026\u201d, the horizontal ellipsis, implying that the amendment said more.\u00a0\u00a0And it does. \u201cA well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State\u2026\u201d, implies that regulation and militia somehow temper \u201cthe right of the people\u201d.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But this is not an argument about guns today.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s about an even more important public health issue, childhood vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron Lung<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When I was a kid, back in the \u201cdark old days\u201d of the 1950\u2019s and 60\u2019s, we all ran the gauntlet of childhood diseases.\u00a0\u00a0I had the mumps, measles, and scarlet fever.\u00a0\u00a0Somehow I missed chicken pox, but that caught up with me in my early thirties.\u00a0\u00a0There were no vaccines for those diseases then, and for most kids, it was a blip in a normal life.\u00a0\u00a0But for some it was life altering, even life ending.\u00a0\u00a0We all read about Helen Keller, blinded and deafened by childhood disease.\u00a0\u00a0So while we \u201cknew\u201d we were likely to get sick, we (and our parents) could only hope we would be okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The great threat to us was polio, the \u201csummer-time\u201d disease. Some recovered from it, some were paralyzed or placed in \u201ciron lungs\u201d, and some died.\u00a0\u00a0Our family\u2019s luck was  right down the street from our home in Cincinnati.  Albert Sabin, who developed the oral vaccine, lived a couple of blocks away.\u00a0\u00a0So while some of my sisters friends risked polio just a few years earlier, by the time I was at risk, I simply had to drink a cherry syrup, and be protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eradication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And, since we travelled back to England to visit Mom\u2019s family, we were also required to get smallpox vaccinations.\u00a0\u00a0I still have the dime-sized scar on my left arm, the mark of \u201cprotection\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Smallpox vaccinations were so successful that the disease was eradicated worldwide in 1980.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The scrouge of mankind for centuries, killing and scarring hundreds of millions without regard to status or financial standing, was wiped out, and no longer a risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Smallpox spread from one human to another.\u00a0\u00a0It took a worldwide program of vaccination to disrupt the cycle of transmission. Once everyone was vaccinated (literally everyone) then there were no \u201ctransmitters\u201d left, and the disease ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weighing the Risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It might sound hyperbolic, but getting a smallpox vaccination wasn\u2019t just protecting yourself, it was protecting the entire human race.\u00a0\u00a0And it worked so well, that kids today don\u2019t even know what the \u201cscar\u201d looks like, or what it was for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today smallpox is \u201cjust\u201d history.\u00a0\u00a0And my generations gauntlet; measles, chicken pox, mumps, scarlet fever, rubella, whooping cough and the rest, are generally avoidable.\u00a0\u00a0There are vaccines that can provide wide protection from all of those, and more.\u00a0\u00a0In being vaccinated, children get personally protected. But they also protect other children whose conditions do not allow them to receive the medications.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If no one in a class gets measles, then, no one in the class risks measles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Public Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are risks in any medical procedure.\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s easy today for parents to get \u201cscared away\u201d from vaccination.\u00a0\u00a0In our online world, it takes only a few keystrokes to find horror stories of measles (actually MMR) vaccine reaction.\u00a0\u00a0Oddly, it difficult to find a reputable \u201cscientific\u201d site warning of those reactions. Instead, it\u2019s someone\u2019s blog, or opinion on Reddit, or some other personal account. Oh, and the law firms who will take your case of \u201cfor free\u201d to sue if there is a vaccine reaction. (Free really means contingency fee based on collecting a settlement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What does the \u201cpublic good\u201d require?\u00a0\u00a0It requires that many assume the tiny risk of vaccine reaction, in order to protect all from the much greater risks of the diseases themselves.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is the public duty, that our internet \u201cinformed\u201d society is struggling to uphold.\u00a0\u00a0And, it doesn\u2019t help that the  worm-damaged brain of the Secretary of Health and Human Services feeds the disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It took a vaccine to get our Nation back to work from the Covid pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0That vaccination, and the, infamous \u201cmask mandates\u201d, helped us avoid the worst of Covid. In fact, it\u2019s estimated that if everyone had followed the mandates, instead of taking \u201cpolitical stands\u201d against them, another 220,000 Americans would have survived (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37093505\/\">NIH<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0Their position was based on \u201cFreedom\u201d, but without regard for the public good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To put it bluntly, some Americans were not only foolish, but selfish.\u00a0\u00a0And they are now the ones running our public health systems today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Childhood Vaccination It\u2019s an underlying theme of America today:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cfreedom\u201d versus \u201cthe public good\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The most obvious example is in our ongoing public health crisis about gun death.\u00a0\u00a0One side correctly points out the Second Amendment.
