Little Dictator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newspaper\u2019s used to call it the \u201csilly season\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s August:\u00a0\u00a0folks are on vacation, or finishing up Little League season, or getting ready to go back to school.\u00a0\u00a0Congress is on recess (no, they don\u2019t have swings or a giant slide).\u00a0\u00a0The weather is hot, and humid; and as George Gershwin put it, \u201c\u2026the living is easy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It used to be a time when odd stories about UFO\u2019s, or crazy Amish mothers who try to kill their families, or lost French Bulldogs wandering the countryside led the headlines.\u00a0\u00a0But this is the \u201cAge of Trump\u201d, and there\u2019s no \u201coxygen\u201d left in the room for Amish mothers or \u201cFrenchies\u201d (those are true, sad stories, by the way).\u00a0\u00a0Instead, day after day, the President of the United States puts on his own \u201cshow\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And he fills all the air time; all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Ignatius, a highly respected foreign affairs columnist for the\u00a0Washington Post,\u00a0<\/em>made the point, after yesterday\u2019s edition of the \u201cTrump Show\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Trump talked about everything.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s sending the National Guard into an unwilling Chicago. He\u2019s criminalized US flag burning. And, Trump thinks he stopped \u201cseven\u201d wars in the last six months (it was six, maybe five, and if you ask the nations involved, maybe none).\u00a0\u00a0Then, Trump hinted of a future visit to North Korea. As Ignatius said, \u201ctune in again tomorrow to see Donald Trump with his friend Kim Jong Un!!\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not\u00a0The Apprentice,\u00a0<\/em>it\u2019s more like a modernized\u00a0Little Dictator.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(Oh, yes, he did talk about becoming a dictator as well).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting on the Dock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s overwhelming, and it leaves little time for any other political news in the world. To keep the pressure on, last night Trump claimed to fire a Federal Reserve Governor, one of the board members who helps regulate the economy.\u00a0\u00a0Because he \u201ctweeted it\u201d on Truth Social, why then it must be true, (even if he can\u2019t).\u00a0\u00a0Oh, and there was an executive order to banning cashless bail, another \u201claw\u201d the President doesn\u2019t have the power to enforce.\u00a0\u00a0But it makes a good headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a tsunami of information, like drinking from a fire hose.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a beer-boiled brats overflow of junk on a hot stove. And it\u2019s hard to keep track of what happened, what\u2019s going on, what\u2019s real, and what\u2019s coming up next.\u00a0\u00a0We need summer time, \u201cthe living is easy\u201d; some\u00a0\u00a0\u201cyacht rock\u201d Christopher Cross\u00a0Sailing<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0and a seat on the dock with feet dangling.\u00a0\u00a0Instead we get this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not a coincidence, or a \u201chappenstance\u201d, that this is all happening right now.\u00a0\u00a0Congress is really on recess, and so is the Supreme Court (and many other Federal judges).\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s actually no one on \u201cduty\u201d to counter all of the executive action by Trump, clearly orchestrated by the person in the pale blue suit,\u00a0\u00a0the \u201cright hand man\u201d of the President, Stephen Miller.\u00a0\u00a0So, while Chris Cross croons in the background (you should have clicked the link!!), let\u2019s look at what\u2019s really important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Cities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The President\u2019s attempt to militarize law enforcement is more than scary.\u00a0\u00a0We know that the National Guard in first Los Angeles, and now Washington, aren\u2019t doing more than \u201cappearing\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Sure, there are armored vehicles outside of Union Station, and troops wandering Dupont Circle.\u00a0\u00a0But they look more like sailors on shore leave than \u201cpolice\u201d, and don\u2019t have the legal authority to take action anyway.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what are they doing?\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0\u00a0armed forces on the streets of American cities, even if they can\u2019t do much, is the image that the Trump team wants.\u00a0\u00a0Those \u201ccrime-ridden cities\u201d, run by not just Democrats, but invariably Black Democrats, “are out of control”, they say.\u00a0\u00a0Except, they aren\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0But the presence of Federalized troops in US cities is MAGA\u2019s way of saying, \u201cThere will be no \u2018Blue Bubbles\u2019 of safety.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We, MAGA, will go anywhere, and do anything (ICE) to achieve our goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiananmen Square<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the Democratic state governors and mayors won\u2019t kowtow to Trump, then he will attempt to Federalize their cities.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s all highly extra-legal.\u00a0\u00a0In any normal time, Federal judges up through the Supreme Court would stop this on a dime.\u00a0\u00a0But, this is the age of Trump, and, while we can be sure there will be District Judges who will stand up, we cannot depend on the Supreme Court.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe they will, eventually, but it might be two or three years down the road.\u00a0\u00a0The damage will be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it\u2019s time to pull a\u00a0Tiananmen Square, and lay down in front of a military column moving into Chicago, or Baltimore, or some other city in a Democratic state with a Black mayor.\u00a0\u00a0Direct action seems \u201cright\u201d, but it also is exactly what Mr. Miller wants.\u00a0\u00a0To prove MAGA \u201cmanhood\u201d, he\u2019d order the column to roll right over the bodies, just like China in 1989.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or maybe it\u2019s time for Governors to refuse nationalization of their Guards, like Wes Moore plans to do in Maryland.\u00a0\u00a0And if Stephen Miller tries to use \u201cRed State\u201d Guards to enforce MAGA rule?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
