{"id":8078,"date":"2025-08-24T10:46:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T14:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8078"},"modified":"2025-08-24T10:46:57","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T14:46:57","slug":"an-american-atrocity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/08\/24\/an-american-atrocity\/","title":{"rendered":"An American Atrocity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>One of the more forgotten aspects of Second World War history is the internment of foreign nationals and American citizens within the Lone Star State. These internment camps were located in five places: Crystal City, Seagoville, Kenedy, Dodd Field, and Fort Bliss. Through four Japanese American Confinement Sites Program (JACS) grants between 2009 and 2015 the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has worked to preserve the history of all five internment camps&nbsp;&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/preserving-wwii-internment-history-in-texas.htm\">NPS.Gov<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pearl Harbor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">December 7<sup>th<\/sup>, 1941, was, \u201c\u2026a day that shall live in infamy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A Japanese air assault caught the American forces at Pearl Harbor completely by surprise.\u00a0\u00a0Five battleships, the pride of the US Navy, were sunk or severely damaged.\u00a0\u00a0The USS Arizona went down in a huge explosion, with 1177 officers and crew killed.\u00a0\u00a0The USS Oklahoma capsized, with 429 killed.  And the USS California, Nevada, and West Virginia, damaged and sunk, were later re-floated to play a part in the Second World War.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Three other Battleships were also damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The destruction of the US Pacific Fleet went far beyond the loss of the Battleships.\u00a0\u00a0Eleven other ships were damaged, 348 aircraft destroyed or damaged, and 2,403 killed in the attack.\u00a0\u00a0The one \u201csaving grace\u201d for Americans;\u00a0\u00a0three aircraft carriers were out at sea at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Up until the moment of the attack, America was divided over World War II.\u00a0\u00a0The battle in Europe had been going since September of 1939. While the United States gave material aid to Great Britain, generally Americans opposed getting directly involved in the battle.\u00a0\u00a0Japan waged a war of conquest in China since 1937, and with Europe effectively removed from the Pacific front, the United States stood as the only blockade to Japanese expansion.\u00a0\u00a0If they could take the US Navy \u201coff the board\u201d, their conquest of the Pacific could continue unfettered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">War with Japan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The attack on Pearl Harbor changed everything.\u00a0\u00a0As President Franklin Roosevelt correctly pointed out in his address asking for a Declaration of War, \u201c\u2026the American People, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Congress declared war on Japan, and within days, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States.\u00a0\u00a0America was fully \u201cin\u201d World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There was a clear racial component to America\u2019s reaction to war.\u00a0While German Americans and Italian Americans looked like \u201ceveryone else\u201d, Japanese Americans were easily recognized.\u00a0\u00a0The state of California, left vulnerable by the loss of Pearl Harbor as an effective defense, viewed every Japanese-American; man, woman and child, as a threat.\u00a0\u00a0That included those born in Japan, and the Nisei, American born citizens of Japanese descent.\u00a0\u00a0Within months, Roosevelt issued Executive Order #9066. He authorized a forced removal from the West Coast \u201czone\u201d, to be held in \u201crelocation camps\u201d.  It didn\u2019t matter  their citizenship status:\u00a0\u00a0Nisei or Japanese; they were rounded up. \u00a0Many were held for three years in camps scattered throughout the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the early detention camps was located at Fort Bliss, just outside El Paso, Texas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fort Bliss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">El Paso, Texas, is a center of the migration \u201ccrisis\u201d on the US Southern border.\u00a0\u00a0While the city itself enjoys a warm and cooperative relationship with Ciudad Juarez across the border in Mexico, the pressures of migration influences both towns.\u00a0\u00a0They are well aware of their location as a major border crossing for Central and South Americans\u2019 trying to enter the US.\u00a0\u00a0And when there is no legal method to cross, those migrants become prey to \u201ccoyotes\u201d who send them out into the surrounding desert to \u201ccross the line\u201d illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Nearby Fort Bliss has been used to house some of those migrants in the past.\u00a0\u00a0The first Trump Administration temporarily housed \u201cunaccompanied minors\u201d there, and the Biden Administration used it as an \u201cemergency intake center\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Today, ICE is building a huge detention facility and bringing in detainees from all over the Nation.\u00a0\u00a0Like Japanese-Americans, many were denied legal due-process, and simply swept off the streets and transported far from their homes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1944, the US Supreme Court ruled in\u00a0<em>Korematsu v United States<\/em>\u00a0that Executive Order #9066 and the internment process were a \u201clegal exercise\u201d of Presidential authority in time of war.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, it took until 2018, in\u00a0<em>Trump v Hawaii,\u00a0<\/em>for the Supreme Court to repudiate that decision.\u00a0\u00a0Congress took decades to apologize as well, in the\u00a0<em>Civil Liberties Act of 1988.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trump Administration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Donald Trump used the migrant issue as the single basis of his political rise to prominence.\u00a0\u00a0It was the core of his introduction, the speech at the bottom of the \u201cgolden escalator\u201d at Trump Tower in 2015.\u00a0\u00a0But, during his first administration he ran into Congress and the Courts, \u201cimpeding\u201d his desire to attack migrants here in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So when he returned in 2025, Trump successfully (at least, so far) overwhelmed opposition. He declared a \u201cwar\u201d on Central and South American \u201cgangs\u201d as a predicate to action. He\u2019s used Executive Orders, a Congress willing to relinquish authority, and an overwhelmed Federal Court system, to drive his program.\u00a0\u00a0Billions of US dollars are going to finance an ICE \u201cArmy\u201d, patrolling the streets looking for so-called \u201cillegals\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Trump\u2019s co-conspirator, Stephen Miller, set a \u201cquota\u201d of 3000 arrests a day (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/may\/29\/trump-ice-arrest-quota\">Guardian)<\/a>. They have to go somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mark Twain\u2019s saying goes:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHistory doesn\u2019t repeat itself, but it often rhymes\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Trump is trying to recreate the racial bias of 1941, by ginning up a crisis:\u00a0\u00a0sending the National Guard to American cities, the ICE Army to snatch \u201cbrown people\u201d, and now, detention centers.\u00a0\u00a0They are even using some of the same locations. And, for the same reason; the isolation, and the hopelessness.\u00a0\u00a0Fort Bliss isn\u2019t the first, and it isn\u2019t the biggest.\u00a0\u00a0But it is symbolic.\u00a0\u00a0From Nisei to migrants,\u00a0\u00a0the camps are filled and the US Constitution be-damned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">How long will it take America to apologize for this atrocity?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the more forgotten aspects of Second World War history is the internment of foreign nationals and American citizens within the Lone Star State.
