You Did It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We definitely live in the age of \u201cwhat-about-ism\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Rather than debate the specifics of an issue, the answer by \u201cthe other side\u201d is almost always, \u201cwhat-about?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Then there\u2019s the litany of statements about when \u201cyour side\u201d did something similar to what the \u201cother side\u201d is doing.\u00a0\u00a0It makes for a frustrating discussion, because it never really gets down to the merits of the issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick example:\u00a0\u00a0the Trump ICE \u201cgang\u201d is going through American cities, rounding up folks who \u201clook like\u201d they might be undocumented migrants.\u00a0\u00a0The take those folks, deny all due process, confine them, and for some, deport them out of the country.\u00a0\u00a0When opponents raise questions about clear violations of Constitutional rights; instead of arguing the Constitution, the response is usually, \u201cwhat-about\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhat-about Obama and Biden, who did the exact same thing?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Well, the answer is, they didn\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Border<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both Democratic Presidents did remove newly arrived undocumented migrants at the border.\u00a0\u00a0They gave them a choice, detention awaiting asylum hearings, or a bus ride back across the border without \u201cprejudice\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That meant those migrants could still wait in line to enter the United State legally.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t the \u201cround-up\u201d in Los Angeles, or Chicago, or Columbus, Ohio; and it didn\u2019t require \u201cdetention facilities\u201d to be built throughout the nation.\u00a0\u00a0It was literally a roadside decision for the migrants.\u00a0\u00a0They got picked up, they decided what to do, and they either went to detention or went back across the border.\u00a0\u00a0Regardless of MAGA what-about, it\u2019s not the same thing as the inhumane treatment by ICE today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s happening with migrants today is a serious question, one that strikes directly at the heart of the United States Constitution. (For more on that, see this earlier essay,\u00a0Black Letter Law<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0But there\u2019s another issue, this most recent \u201cwhat-about\u201d, that is a little less traumatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Democrats, and all folks who find MAGA repugnant, are enjoying the current Administration crisis over the EPSTEIN FILES!!.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not about the atrocious actions of Epstein and Maxwell and their wealthy compatriots.\u00a0Everyone, at least, that I know, finds child molestation abhorrent.\u00a0\u00a0So when I call out the Trump \u201cgang\u201d on the EPSTEIN FILES!!, instead of getting a reasonable discussion about the facts, my MAGA friends immediately resort to \u201cwhat-about\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWell, Joe Biden\u2019s Department of Justice had the EPSTEIN FILES!!. Why didn\u2019t they reveal them?\u00a0\u00a0What-about that?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s an interesting argument, one with enough truth in it to bring a pause to the discussion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here, just this once, is the answer.\u00a0\u00a0Then I\u2019m done with getting in the mud about Epstein.\u00a0\u00a0To everyone involved in the Epstein bacchanals, to quote\u00a0Hamilton, the Musical,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI hope you burn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epstein<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jeffrey Epstein was indicted (for the second time) by the FBI in July of 2019.\u00a0\u00a0That was during the first Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0There was a large amount of evidence amassed from searches of Epstein\u2019s homes, both in the United States and overseas.\u00a0\u00a0The case was more than solid, and Epstein was likely to spend the remainder of his life in jail.\u00a0\u00a0But in August, only a month after his arrest, he was found dead in his cell in the Metropolitan Correction Center in New York.\u00a0\u00a0It was ruled a suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of that was under the \u201cwatch\u201d of Trump appointed Attorney General Bill Barr.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year later, in July of 2020, Epstein\u2019s co-abuser, procurer, and groomer, Ghislaine Maxwell, was arrested by the FBI.\u00a0\u00a0That too, was under Trump\u2019s Department of Justice.\u00a0\u00a0Her Federal trial began in November of 2021, now under the Biden Justice Department, and she was found guilty of varying sex crimes in December of that year and sentenced to twenty years in prison.\u00a0\u00a0No other criminal charges were brought in the cases around Epstein.\u00a0\u00a0This was, in part, because most of the possible charges occurred almost two decades before, and Federal law carries a five to ten year statute of limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to Normal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the avowed goals of the Biden Administration was to get \u201cback to normal\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0This was particularly true when it came to the Department of Justice.\u00a0\u00a0There was the huge controversy created by FBI Director James Comey\u2019s \u201cspeech\u201d announcing that Hillary Clinton was not going to be indicted. In it, he then blamed Clinton for actions that might have broken the law. That speech and his later letter to Congress, violated all past practice and procedure.\u00a0\u00a0Some, including myself, believe that Comey\u2019s statements were a pivotal reason that Trump won in 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So getting \u201cback to normal\u201d meant that Justice would either speak through indictments, or not speak at all.\u00a0Since no one else around Epstein could be indicted, the Merrick Garland Justice Department had nothing more to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 2024 Presidential campaign, neither President Biden nor Vice President Harris even mentioned the EPSTEIN FILES!!\u00a0\u00a0They wanted \u201cnormal\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0the Justice Department couldn\u2019t indict, and that was all there was to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one of the promises of the 2024 Trump Campaign was to \u201creveal\u201d what was in the EPSTEIN FILES!!\u00a0\u00a0They led many voters to believe that all sorts of \u201cDemocrats\u201d were involved in Epstein\u2019s sordid activities.\u00a0\u00a0And they all promised: Trump, Bondi, FBI Director Patel, and most prominently, FBI Assistant Director Dan Borgino, to reveal the EPSTEIN FILES!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until they got in power.\u00a0\u00a0Then, even after Bondi said she that the \u201cfiles\u201d were on her desk, they came back and said there was \u201cnothing there\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t about Epstein or Joe Biden.\u00a0\u00a0This is about lying to your own supporters.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s about the lack of integrity in the Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s what we should be arguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
