{"id":8005,"date":"2025-07-25T09:51:27","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T13:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=8005"},"modified":"2025-07-25T09:51:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T13:51:29","slug":"american-narcissism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/07\/25\/american-narcissism\/","title":{"rendered":"American Narcissism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>Narcissism \u2013 excessive interest in oneself&nbsp;&nbsp;(Mariam-Webster)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">In Gaza, over a million Palestinians are at risk of starvation.\u00a0\u00a0Already, folks are dying from lack of food.\u00a0\u00a0The press describes it in the most basic terms:\u00a0\u00a0even their own employees working in Gaza, with jobs and incomes, cannot guarantee their own food needs.\u00a0\u00a0One Palestinian puts the daily search for food bluntly:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe might get killed, but we have to get food\u201d. <em>(BBC<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">At the Thailand\/Cambodia border a growing dispute killed at least sixteen, and tens of thousands are \u201cdisplaced\u201d;\u00a0\u00a0running from the fighting. (<em>BBC<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">In Nairobi, Kenya, clashes between protestors demanding police be held accountable for deaths and injuries, and hired thugs, continue in the streets. (<em>Washington Post<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Climate changes continue, as northern Finland and Alaska both experience unprecedented heat waves.\u00a0\u00a0The Finnish region of Lapland topped eighty-five degrees (Fahrenheit).\u00a0\u00a0(<em>BBC<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">America First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">World War I taught Americans a stark lesson:\u00a0\u00a0Americans dying in foreign fields was difficult to take.\u00a0\u00a0Over 53,000 Americans died in combat during the brief twenty-month period the US was involved.\u00a0\u00a0Even more, over 63,000 died from non-combat causes. Many were lost\u00a0\u00a0to the \u201cSpanish Flu\u201d, a pandemic that actually originated at Fort Riley, Kansas and spread, with the soldiers, world-wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The immediate lesson America learned was:\u00a0\u00a0don\u2019t be involved in world affairs.\u00a0\u00a0George Washington\u2019s farewell address was often invoked:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world\u2026\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And so the America of the 1920\u2019s avoided involvement with the rest of the world, including the League of Nations, proposed to end wars by our own President, Woodrow Wilson.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, we became an insular nation, hiding behind our \u201cimpregnable\u201d oceans, and a stiff wall of import tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extremism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But, like the Spanish Flu, the world was still able to seep through to American life.\u00a0\u00a0When the United States banned the production of alcohol for pleasurable consumption, the borders became opportunities for profit.\u00a0\u00a0Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean; all became channels for high-risk, high-profit smuggling.\u00a0\u00a0The first big rise of organized crime in the United States came from supplying Americans what they wanted:\u00a0\u00a0bootleggers selling illegal booze.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And when the US economy collapsed in the Great Depression, it took little time for that economic disaster to spread worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0Joblessness that peaked in the United States at 25%, went as high as 33% in other industrial nations.\u00a0\u00a0The  existing governments failed to prevent or resolve the economic issues.  That led to the growth of political extremism on both sides of the spectrum.\u00a0\u00a0Communism became more popular, as did Fascism.\u00a0\u00a0And the United States did little to stop extremism in the world.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, those same views found popularity in the US itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pax Americana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ultimately the world reached out across the \u201cimpregnable\u201d oceans, and the US found itself in World War II.\u00a0\u00a0The authoritarian threats came from both directions:\u00a0\u00a0the Japanese military dictatorship to the West, and Nazism and Fascism to the East.\u00a0\u00a0America could have led the world towards peace after World War I.\u00a0\u00a0That was the intent of the much-maligned Wilson Administration.\u00a0\u00a0But rising isolationism, and Wilson\u2019s own physical infirmity, allowed the US to turn away from leadership.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There was bipartisan belief that this should not happen again after World War II.\u00a0\u00a0And so the United Nations was \u201cborn\u201d in San Francisco, with the specific intent of keeping the world from another global conflict.\u00a0\u00a0And the United States developed and led treaty organizations; NATO, CENTO, SEATO and the rest, to hold firm to the idea that strength could bring peace.\u00a0\u00a0For over seventy years, world conflagration was avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Narcissists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But now the United States has turned inward again.\u00a0\u00a0 The policy of the US Government is based once again on the principle of \u201cAmerica First\u201d.  The tariff wall is going up, and the President talks about the \u201cstrength\u201d of our oceanic borders.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, America, \u201cthe shining city on the hill\u201d of Ronald Reagan, is closing its doors to the \u201chuddled masses yearning to be free\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The Statue of Liberty now represents the \u201clamp\u201d lifted to reveal a \u201cgolden door\u201d bolted shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We Americans are more worried about the \u201cEpstein Files\u201d and the duel between Trump and Fed Chairman Powell, or re-litigating the 2016 election; then we are about starvation in Gaza, or climate change, or potential wars throughout the world.\u00a0\u00a0Our \u201cimportant\u201d issues are ones of politics, culture and religion, not the needs of those throughout the globe.\u00a0\u00a0We are more worried about ourselves than the world we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We are narcissists; only interested in ourselves:  just like our nation&#8217;s leaders today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Narcissism \u2013 excessive interest in oneself&nbsp;&nbsp;(Mariam-Webster) America First World War I taught Americans a stark lesson:\u00a0\u00a0Americans dying in foreign fields was difficult to take.\u00a0\u00a0Over 53,000 Americans died in combat during the brief twenty-month period the US was involved.\u00a0\u00a0Even more, over 63,000 died from non-combat causes.
