Fuss at Glastonbury<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I have questions. Is it possible to be appalled with the fate of the Palestinians in Gaza, and also appalled at the Hamas attack in October 7th?\u00a0\u00a0Can I believe in the right of\u00a0both\u00a0Israelis and Palestinians to exist?\u00a0\u00a0And did the Hamas attack of 10-7 give Netanyahu a \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d to kill all the Palestinians to \u201cmake sure\u201d he got every member of Hamas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a British punk\/rap group named\u00a0\u00a0Bob Vylan.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019re not \u201cmy cup of tea\u201d, but at the Glastonbury Festival (think Coachella here in US) Vylan spoke out for the Palestinians. In fact, they had the crowd chanting \u201cDeath to the IDF!!\u201d (Israel Defense Force – the Israeli army).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That created a big fuss in the UK. The Chief Rabbi in London called them anti-Semitic, and the Glastonbury constabulary is investigating charges. There\u2019s no First Amendment in the UK, though freedom of speech is still a right.\u00a0\u00a0But, it is more limited there than in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0And, the BBC was broadcasting the concert live – the chant went over the air internationally.\u00a0\u00a0The United States response was to\u00a0\u00a0revoke Vylans\u2019 visas.\u00a0\u00a0Their next concert in France was cancelled as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Goose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Is calling for an army\u2019s death anti-Semitic?\u00a0\u00a0If Netanyahu says he will destroy Hamas – is that the same as destroy Palestinians?\u00a0\u00a0It seems so to him. There\u2019s an old English expression – \u201cWhat\u2019s good for the goose is good for the gander\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Looks to me like one bird is going free, and one is getting cooked.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t \u201cPalestine will be free, from the river to the sea!!\u201d, a chant clearly aimed at removing the Israelis\/Jews, in the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The IDF is the exact agent aimed at the Palestinian people. Are Ukrainians being racist when they hope to destroy the Russian Army?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Victims<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an essay about the \u201cappropriation\u201d of the term anti-Semitism, \u201dNot His Choice<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0There are a lot of folks, many not Jewish, who are determining what is \u201canti-Semitic\u201d and what is not.\u00a0\u00a0And, at the moment, the term \u201canti-Semitic\u201d seems to be a cloak of invincibility wrapped around the actions of the Israeli government.\u00a0\u00a0Any criticism by, say; a candidate for Mayor of New York City, or the students of Harvard University, or a punk\/rap group in the United Kingdom, are automatically labeled anti-Semitic.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of the time it seems like \u201cthrowing down\u201d anti-Semitism is really more about the political goals of the \u201cthrower\u201d, rather than actually protecting Jewish people from attack.\u00a0\u00a0Does Harvard, and other universities, need to do a better job of parsing free speech and threats?\u00a0\u00a0They absolutely do.\u00a0\u00a0But, for all those American conservatives who complained that they weren\u2019t \u201clistened to\u201d on campuses, it seems like their sudden interest in protecting Jewish students is, at least, convenient. It’s more an intersection of common interest. Actually, it seems more like getting vengeance for their own perceived victimhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends Tell Friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s easy to attack punk\/rappers, and international students, for trying to stand up for the victims they are seeing.\u00a0\u00a0Palestinians in Gaza are starving, mostly because of the actions of the state of Israel, the IDF.\u00a0\u00a0More than 600 Palestinians have been killed just waiting in line for food.\u00a0\u00a0It takes a particular brand of callousness to see their plight as \u201cpayback\u201d for the actions of Hamas.\u00a0\u00a0What\u2019s happening to them is wrong,\u00a0\u00a0just like it\u2019s wrong to see criticism of that starvation, as being an attack on \u201call Jewish people\u201d; anti-Semitism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But politically, Israel is the ally of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0We cooperated in the bombing campaign of Iran, culminating in the dropping of more than $3 Billion worth of bombs by the US in one day of attacks three weeks ago.\u00a0\u00a0And, the US also provides a huge part of the defense \u201cumbrella\u201d for Israel against Iranian responses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US has a lot in common with Israel.\u00a0\u00a0But, sometimes \u201cfriends\u201d need to tell \u201cfriends\u201d when they are wrong \u2013 and what Israel is doing to the Palestinians in Gaza is wrong.\u00a0\u00a0And if that makes me, in some circles,\u00a0\u00a0an \u201canti-Semite\u201d who is 54% Semite; so be it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
