{"id":7912,"date":"2025-06-16T09:14:53","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T13:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7912"},"modified":"2025-06-16T09:14:54","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T13:14:54","slug":"start-listening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/06\/16\/start-listening\/","title":{"rendered":"Start Listening"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chaos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The past few days are a microcosm of what America lives through in a Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0The chaotic and frenetic pace of events far outruns analysis.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not just hard to keep up, it\u2019s impossible to think through one event, when five more slam into it before you can reach a conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Given all of that, here\u2019s some thoughts on the past few days.&nbsp;&nbsp;We started the weekend with ICE immigrant sweeps in Los Angeles.&nbsp;&nbsp;ICE wasn\u2019t rounding up criminals, they were dropping in and grabbing undocumented workers, criminal or not.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, to get by the Trump \u201churdle\u201d, that all undocumented migrants are \u201ccriminal\u201d; I call BS.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s like calling all folks with a speeding ticket \u201ccriminal\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yes, the undocumented likely violated the civil immigration regulations.&nbsp;&nbsp;That does not make them \u201ccriminals\u201d in the legal sense.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have an unpaid parking ticket in Iowa from 1987.&nbsp;&nbsp;If I go back to Iowa, I guess I need to worry.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m sure there\u2019s fines and interest due.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But I\u2019m not a \u201ccriminal\u201d non-payer!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Which takes us to \u201csanctuary cities\u201d, like Columbus, Ohio, or Los Angeles.&nbsp;&nbsp;A \u201csanctuary city\u201d doesn\u2019t harbor criminals.&nbsp;&nbsp;They simply don\u2019t help ICE enforce the civil penalties for violating immigration regulations,&nbsp;&nbsp;just like our local Pataskala Police don\u2019t enforce Iowa parking tickets, or collect unpaid IRS taxes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both Columbus and Pataskala have enough to do to deal with \u201creal\u201d criminals, without creating more work on civil matters.&nbsp;&nbsp;So they stay out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jurisdiction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are two issues of \u201cjurisdiction\u201d that \u201carise\u201d in Los Angeles.\u00a0\u00a0The first is the jurisdiction of ICE, who are charged with enforcing immigration laws.\u00a0\u00a0 They can  go into a Home Depot or a local garment factory and take \u201ccustody\u201d of undocumented workers.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s just not making the world safer.\u00a0\u00a0They aren\u2019t getting the real criminals.\u00a0\u00a0But they are filling the quota of undocumented set by Trump aide Stephen Miller, of 3000 rounded-up a day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I want ICE to go get real criminals, the gang members trafficking in fentanyl or humans.&nbsp;&nbsp;But that\u2019s hard police work; those criminals are well insulated and protected.&nbsp;&nbsp;To make their \u201cquota\u201d for Miller, they have to take the \u201ceasy\u201d migrants, like the hard-working folks picking vegetables in the hot sun of the Central Valley of California.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s similar to the speed trap that used to be in the nearby village of Alexandria:&nbsp;&nbsp;they\u2019d pick you up for doing twenty-six in a twenty-five zone (I\u2019ve got the ticket to prove it).&nbsp;&nbsp;Sure, it\u2019s \u201clegal\u201d, but it\u2019s really just filling the \u201cquota\u201d for the officers, and the coffers of the Village.&nbsp;&nbsp;No one is safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Streets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And then there were protests against the ICE actions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Not surprisingly, there are lots of folks upset that their family, friends, and neighbors are going to work, and not coming home.&nbsp;&nbsp;And they are going out into the streets to make their feelings known.&nbsp;&nbsp;Controlling protests in the street is the job of local jurisdictions.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I marched in Cleveland this past weekend, the Cleveland Police were all around us.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, they made sure the roads were clear, and that we were safe from threatened attack. (In Virginia a van drove into a march, and in Salt Lake City a shooter killed a protestor).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And in protests here in Columbus, the City police are there to maintain safety.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can march on the sidewalk anyway we want, but, without a \u201cparade\u201d permit, we need to stay out of the street.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Cleveland, there was a permit.&nbsp;&nbsp;The marching chant, \u201cWhose streets?&nbsp;&nbsp;Our Streets!\u201d was absolutely true.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Columbus, just get a permit, and it\u2019s true here too; no need for confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If the police can\u2019t handle a situation, they call in backup.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s just like a five-alarm fire, when one department runs out of engines, other departments come to help.&nbsp;&nbsp;And if the situation really gets bad, then the state militia, the National Guard, may be sent in.&nbsp;&nbsp;Remember the Vietnam era picture of the \u201cflower child\u201d putting flowers in the barrels of soldiers\u2019 guns?&nbsp;&nbsp;Those soldiers are&nbsp;&nbsp;the National Guard.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"281\" height=\"179\" data-attachment-id=\"7913\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/06\/16\/start-listening\/flowerpower\/\" \u201cbackup\u201d shows up without invitation?&nbsp;&nbsp;What if the President ignores the local authorities or even the state governor, and \u201cfederalizes\u201d the National Guard?&nbsp;&nbsp;Then there\u2019s a big cross-wiring of authority \u2013 who\u2019s in charge?&nbsp;&nbsp;And there\u2019s an even bigger issue:&nbsp;&nbsp;if the National Guard is Federalized, and ICE is the Federal Government enforcing immigration laws, then the National Guard becomes the \u201ctarget\u201d of the protestors \u2013 after all, it\u2019s not ICE out there trying to hold them back.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s definitely pouring gas on a fire, using the Guard instead of the local police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Of course, that\u2019s exactly what the Trump Administration wants \u2013 gas on a fire to make a conflagration.&nbsp;&nbsp;It proves their point, that \u201cDemocrat Cities Can\u2019t Control their Citizens\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listen&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And the local authorities are still trying to control protest, while protecting civil rights.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yesterday it seemed clear that the Los Angeles City Police were trying to \u201cserve and protect\u201d and the Los Angeles Sheriff\u2019s Department was trying to provoke violence.&nbsp;&nbsp;And what about the National Guard and even the US Marines now on site?&nbsp;&nbsp;Well, they are \u201changing out\u201d, with their thumbs stuck firmly up their\u2026webbed belts.&nbsp;&nbsp;But they make \u201cattractive\u201d targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, millions made their feelings clear all across America.&nbsp;&nbsp;From blue states to red, big cities to small towns, Americans took to the streets to protest the wide range of Trumpian usurpations in the \u201cNo Kings\u201d marches.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whether it was 5 million or 11 million (estimates vary):&nbsp;&nbsp;it was a whole lot of people willing to \u201cRise Up\u201d in protest about what\u2019s going on.&nbsp;&nbsp;And other than the two attacks on the protestors (noted above), and the Sheriff\u2019s Department violence in Los Angeles, the millions were notably peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What\u2019s different today, after \u201cNo Kings\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0We know that there truly are Americans, in every niche of our country, who don\u2019t like what\u2019s going on.\u00a0\u00a0From Newark to Mansfield, from Maine to California, in Ruby-Red Nebraska, and in overheated Texas:\u00a0\u00a0Americans want something very different from the Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, Stephen Miller isn\u2019t listening.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0But the Republican Congressmen and Senators up for election next year
