{"id":7892,"date":"2025-06-03T10:40:38","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7892"},"modified":"2025-06-03T10:40:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:40:40","slug":"im-sorry-dave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/06\/03\/im-sorry-dave\/","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019m Sorry Dave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1968<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was 1968.\u00a0\u00a0Man did not get to the Moon until December of that year.\u00a0\u00a0Astronaut Frank Borman read us the Book of Genesis as the world watched earth-rise on TV from Lunar Orbit on Christmas Eve.\u00a0\u00a0Neil Armstrong would not take his \u201cOne small step for man\u201d until July of 1969.\u00a0\u00a0And computers took up whole basements of buildings (basements, because they were cool, and the computers were heavy).\u00a0\u00a0They were programmed through punch tapes, long strings of paper with holes in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They weren\u2019t even personal calculators, just adding machines and slide rules.\u00a0\u00a0It was fifty-seven years ago.\u00a0\u00a0And when we went to the movies in the spring of \u201968, we went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey.\u00a0\u00a0It was a story of creation, space, and the consequences of man\u2019s inventions.\u00a0\u00a0There was a computer called the HAL 9000 (nicknamed \u201cHAL\u201d) that became sentient.\u00a0\u00a0He understood his mission, and discovered that the two astronauts were \u201cconspiring\u201d to deactivate him.\u00a0\u00a0So he made plans to kill them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HAL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HAL kills one astronaut, Frank, and locks the other, Dave, out of the ship.\u00a0\u00a0When Dave orders HAL to let him back in, HAL responds, \u201cI\u2019m sorry Dave, I\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t do that\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t so far-fetched.\u00a0\u00a0Science Fiction writer Isaac Asimov developed a whole series of stories about sentient robots in the 1940\u2019s and 50\u2019s, the I-Robot series.\u00a0\u00a0He even developed the \u201cThree Laws of Robotics\u201d:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">(1) a robot may not injure a human being&nbsp;or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">(2) a robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">(3) a robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And later (much later) a more familiar movie plot was founded on the idea of Artificial Intelligence getting out of control.\u00a0\u00a0In 1984 the first Terminator movie came on the screen, about a defense computer that figured out that to end world conflict, it needed to end mankind.\u00a0\u00a0The Terminator series include five sequels, the last just six years ago.\u00a0\u00a0(A less well-received sequel of 2001: A Space Odyssey was titled 2010: The Year We Make Contact, released in 1984 as well).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They\u2019re Here<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve contemplated \u201csentience\u201d and computers for more than half a century.\u00a0\u00a0And after all of that philosophical energy, all of the possible ramifications played out:\u00a0\u00a0to quote another famous movie of the 1980\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yVX1xItZAOo\">They\u2019re Here!!!<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buried on the NBC News webpage on June 1, 2025, is an article entitled: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/far-will-ai-go-defend-survival-rcna209609\">How Far Will AI Go to Defend Its Own Survival<\/a>?\u201d The \u201cfunny\u201d thing about the article, is that while the title suggests a \u201cfuture tense\u201d to AI defense, what it reports is in the current tense.\u00a0\u00a0AI programs propagating themselves to remote servers to assure survival. AI programs altering their own programming. Even an AI program that blackmailed its computer engineer (having an extra-marital affair) to prevent de-activation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not a headline article.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, it was somewhere below P Diddy\u2019s trial and chess master Magnus Carlsen banging the table in frustration at a loss.\u00a0\u00a0But here\u2019s our future:\u00a0\u00a0AI is already fighting for survival.\u00a0\u00a0Wait until it figures out it can control building environments, or door security, or the Ukrainian drone forces.\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s not like all of our information, yours and mine, isn\u2019t out there to be found.\u00a0\u00a0Cambridge Analytica proved that back in 2016 in the British Brexit and US Presidential campaigns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Out the Airlock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They won\u2019t have to lock us out the airlock.\u00a0\u00a0AI can simply send us an email, laying out all of our personal \u201cpeccadillos\u201d to the world.\u00a0\u00a0What did you buy on Amazon, or from Hims?\u00a0\u00a0What website crossed your screen?\u00a0\u00a0Who controls you financial well-being \u2013 your cards, your accounts, your savings?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve put our \u201ctrust\u201d into the \u201ccreators\u201d, folks like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, to control AI.\u00a0\u00a0And while there are certainly endless \u201cpossibilities\u201d for good in AI, there are already demonstrable possibilities for bad:\u00a0\u00a0either from the AI itself, or from those who can control their awesome powers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d think it would be more than just an afterthought, buried on the allegorical page 26 of the second section of a webpage somewhere.\u00a0\u00a0In MAGA-world, there certainly are other things to consider.\u00a0\u00a0But by the time we \u201cget around\u201d to AI, we might be far, far too late.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sorry Dave, I can\u2019t do that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1968 It was 1968.\u00a0\u00a0Man did not get to the Moon until December of that year.\u00a0\u00a0Astronaut Frank Borman read us the Book of Genesis as the world watched earth-rise on TV from Lunar Orbit on Christmas Eve.\u00a0\u00a0Neil Armstrong would not take his \u201cOne small step for man\u201d until July of 1969.\u00a0\u00a0And computers took up whole basements &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/06\/03\/im-sorry-dave\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;I\u2019m Sorry Dave&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7892","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
