{"id":7838,"date":"2025-05-01T09:11:04","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T13:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7838"},"modified":"2025-05-01T09:11:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T13:11:07","slug":"figures-never-lie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/05\/01\/figures-never-lie\/","title":{"rendered":"Figures Never Lie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With a Roar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Donald Trump came into office with a \u201croar\u201d.\u00a0 He put his \u201crichest-man-in-the-world\u201d friend, Elon Musk, in charge of slashing the government.\u00a0\u00a0They even came up with a \u201ccatchy\u201d name for their project:\u00a0\u00a0DOGE.\u00a0\u00a0The Department of Government Efficiency was neither a Department (only Congress can create Departments) nor was it particularly efficient.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, they were nothing if not ruthless and destructive.\u00a0\u00a0There wasn\u2019t any analysis of the \u201cimpact\u201d of the DOGE cuts.\u00a0\u00a0Elon said it best \u2013 he took a \u201cchainsaw\u201d to the US Government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">President Trump is fond of using the \u201cdisease\u201d analogy for the impact of his actions on Americans.\u00a0\u00a0He says that sometimes \u201cthe medicine\u201d makes you feel sicker before you feel better.\u00a0\u00a0But the medical analogy for DOGE is the battlefield hospital in the Civil War, with arms and legs stacked outside the tent, hacked off by bloodied surgeons as quickly as casualties come through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waste, Fraud and Abuse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Musk planned on \u201csaving\u201d $2 Trillion from \u201cwaste, fraud and abuse\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Then, he quickly revised the number to $1 Trillion.\u00a0\u00a0But here we are, one hundred and some days later, and DOGE is \u201cproudly\u201d claiming to have saved $150 Billion, and Musk is going back to save Tesla.\u00a0\u00a0Now, $150 Billion isn\u2019t really \u201cchump change\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the annual cost of climate change on Americans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/30\/economy\/what-150-billion-climate-change-damage-looks-like\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>), or the border crisis according to the Republicans (<a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/the-cost-of-the-border-crisis-1507-billion-and-counting\">House Budget Committee<\/a>), or how much more Congress wants to spend on Defense next year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/150b-extra-defense-spending-one-off\/\">Air and Space<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But DOGE doesn\u2019t come cost free.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, estimates of the cost of DOGE\u2019s cost-cuts, are $135 Billion (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/doge-cuts-cost-135-billion-analysis-elon-musk-department-of-government-efficiency\/\">CBS<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0That means that all the turmoil, all the real, actual, deaths caused by DOGE cuts, all the damage to our government and economy, might have saved $15 Billion.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s just about the cost of one Ford Class Aircraft Carrier (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/01\/25\/1226791291\/middle-east-mission-was-a-chance-to-justify-aircraft-carriers-price-tag\">NPR<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What costs?  There&#8217;s the cost of all the folks who were fired, but promised months of pay (fired in February, paid until September).\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s money paid without work gained.\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s not even counting the cost of defending the myriad of Federal lawsuits DOGE created, argued \u201cfor free\u201d by the Justice Department.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s work created, without funding for it.\u00a0\u00a0And, of course, it doesn\u2019t include the cost of the elderly or Veterans spending hours waiting to get through to Social Security or Medicare or the VA.  And the future costs of unemployment, as the fired Federal workers can\u2019t find jobs in the struggling economy that Trump has created.  That&#8217;s not on the DOGE bill either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big Brother<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, the internal government processes DOGE hacked and cut might never recover.\u00a0\u00a0The actual numbers that track government inventories have been deleted from the files.\u00a0\u00a0Stacks of \u201cthings\u201d, from soup to nuts, are no longer accounted for.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And the data the \u201cDOGE Kids\u201d lifted from the Internal Revenue Service (and yesterday, the Postal Service) may turn up in all sorts of places.\u00a0\u00a0Those of us old enough to remember\u00a0<em>1984<\/em>, the book, recognize the phrase \u201cBig Brother is Watching\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It was all about the eyes of the government on everything you do, public and private.\u00a0\u00a0Well, \u201cBig Brother\u201d has a whole lot more information now, and can cross-check it, \u201charvesting\u201d all the data about you and me.\u00a0\u00a0To mimic my MAGA friends, \u201cThanks Donald Trump!!\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have it Both Ways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And meanwhile, the Trump Administration is literally promising two opposite things from the tariff policy.\u00a0\u00a0On the one hand, they argue that tariffs will raise so much money, that the government might consider wiping out income taxes for those making $200,000 or less.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, since it\u2019s consumers who pay the costs of the tariffs, it\u2019s not really a \u201ctax-cut\u201d; it\u2019s more of a \u201ctax shift\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s a regressive tax shift.    More of the tax burden lands on lower income Americans; forced to pay higher prices for all sorts of imported goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">On the other hand, they promise that the tariffs will be \u201cnegotiated\u201d, and won\u2019t impact prices.\u00a0\u00a0So if the tariffs are negotiated, and therefore not collected at the rates that Trump first imposed, then where will the money be to \u201ccut taxes\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0Republicans in Congress are depending on the tariffs to generate the revenue to cover their proposed budget. That includes more than $1 trillion in deficits without tariff money.  How will all that work?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Congress wants to cut taxes.\u00a0\u00a0Congress wants to spend money.
