{"id":7752,"date":"2025-03-23T09:29:24","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T13:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7752"},"modified":"2025-03-23T09:29:26","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T13:29:26","slug":"controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/03\/23\/controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Control the Issue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There is an old political trick:&nbsp;&nbsp;if you can \u201cname\u201d the issue, you can \u201ccontrol\u201d the issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;The classic example is the ongoing American controversy over abortions.&nbsp;&nbsp;One side is against abortion, the other is for it.&nbsp;&nbsp;But that\u2019s not how we talk about it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our arguments generally accept the language of one side:&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cpro-life\u201d folks are against abortion.&nbsp;&nbsp;And while the other side tried to \u201ccontrol\u201d the language by calling themselves \u201cpro-choice\u201d, in the end, if you\u2019re not \u201cpro-life\u201d, why, then you must be \u201cpro-death\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;And who wants to be \u201cpro-death\u201d?&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s controlling the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here in Ohio we are in a battle to control academic minds.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, we don\u2019t name it that way.\u00a0\u00a0But there is a segment of the state, well over-represented in the state legislature, that believes that public colleges are \u201cbastions of liberal thought\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I just need to point out that if Ohio\u2019s colleges are all so \u201cliberal\u201d, then how-come the voters of Ohio have acquiesced in a political system almost guaranteed to maintain the power of the MAGA-Republican party?&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s like those local community members who claim that school teachers are \u201cindoctrinating\u201d their children in a \u201cliberal &#8211; National Education Association\u201d view of the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indoctrinate students in a political view?&nbsp;&nbsp;Teachers can\u2019t even get kids to stop chewing gum in class, or turn in their homework.&nbsp;&nbsp;If we could indoctrinate, we\u2019d probably start there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But it\u2019s a real issue for the state legislature.\u00a0\u00a0There is a proposal, Senate Bill 1, that is now on the Governor\u2019s desk for signature into law.\u00a0\u00a0It \u201credefines\u201d how public colleges (state schools) can teach.\u00a0\u00a0And they use the \u201cboogie man\u201d of MAGA world, the magic three letters \u201cDEI\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The President of the United States and his billionaire buddies have made \u201cDiversity, Equity and Inclusion\u201d the most terrible thing that ever happened in American history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Why in the world would we want America, a nation of immigrants from all parts of the world, to teach diversity?\u00a0\u00a0Why in a Nation supposedly dedicated to equality, would we want greater representation of different gender, ethnic, and cultural groups?\u00a0\u00a0And, why would we want folks from one of the different groups included with the others?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you think about \u201cDEI\u201d, it\u2019s really about America.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the fight against \u201cDEI\u201d is about America as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;MAGA\u2019s greatest appeal is based on a reality:&nbsp;&nbsp;the changing demographic of our population.&nbsp;&nbsp;Donald Trump, Red MAGA Hats, anti-DEI laws or not; in the next fifteen years white people will no longer be a majority in the Nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s that statistical reality that fuels the MAGA movement, attracting white people, and particularly white men, to claim \u201cvictimhood\u201d to \u201cDEI\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Changing America is taking away the advantage that white men had throughout our history.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the way to fight that, to maintain the advantage, is to stop \u201cDEI\u201d and to export anyone they can who doesn\u2019t \u201cfit\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s why Trump\u2019s draconian and cruel immigration policies are so popular.&nbsp;&nbsp;They aren\u2019t deporting \u201cwhite\u201d people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appropriated Language<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In Senate Bill 1, the MAGA-Republicans have even appropriated the language of their ideological opponents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>On the academic side, each university must declare that its primary function is the \u201cpursuit of knowledge\u201d and \u201caffirm and declare\u201d that it will ensure full intellectual diversity. It must \u201cdemonstrate\u201d intellectual diversity in all course approvals, general education courses, annual reviews, strategic goals for each department and student learning outcomes. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2025\/03\/20\/senate-bill-1-guts-academic-freedom-and-reshapes-ohios-public-universities\/\">Ohio Capital Journa<\/a>l)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s the \u201cmagic word\u201d, diversity.\u00a0\u00a0But in the case of Senate Bill 1, diversity means that the intellectual message of the right must be included in every discussion.\u00a0\u00a0So when a professor talks about climate change, they MUST include the views of those who ignore science and simply don\u2019t believe in it.\u00a0\u00a0And when they talk about the history of Black Americans, they must add in the Ku Klux Klan, because \u201cthere were good people on both sides\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And if a law school professor actually might happen to venture into inherent racism in American law, say, the difference between punishments for crack use versus cocaine use; the old \u201cboogie man\u201d of \u201cCritical Race Theory\u201d will be thrown down like a gauntlet before a duel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intellectual Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When I went to college, I got to learn from liberals and conservatives, Marxists and free marketeers, cutting edge scientists and staid elder statesmen.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s real diversity of thought.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the best part, was that my young mind sponged it all in, and used the differing thoughts and philosophies to synthesize my own intellectual views.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was challenging, and exciting, and sometimes frustrating.&nbsp;&nbsp;But I got to see all sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Some of my professors were \u201ccontroversial\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;But Senate bill 1 states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>A state institution must establish a system to respond to complaints about any administrator, faculty member, staff or student who interferes with the intellectual diversity of another.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, in substance, students can file a complaint against a professor for addressing a controversial topic or stating a historic fact that students find infringing upon their intellectual diversity rights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>The bill defines \u201ccontroversial belief or policy\u201d as \u201cany belief or policy that is the subject of political controversy, including issues such as climate policies, electoral politics, foreign policy, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, immigration policy, marriage, or abortion.<\/em><em>&nbsp;(Ohio Capital Journal).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infringe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In short, if the professor \u201cinfringes\u201d on someone\u2019s personal intellectual MAGA beliefs (something we used to call the \u201cSocratic Method\u201d of teaching), instead of accepting the challenge and defending their views, they become\u00a0\u00a0\u201cvictims\u201d and complain to the administration.\u00a0\u00a0And since the MAGA-Republicans control the budget, that professor, like those students who protest against losing \u201cDEI\u201d programs, are out of luck; and out of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0Governor DeWine, just back from helping President Trump disband the Department of Education, will likely sign it.\u00a0\u00a0And the great benefit of college; exposing students to differing intellectual ideas and beliefs, will be stifled.\u00a0\u00a0Ohio State University and the other fifty public colleges and two-year institutions will carefully teach one party\u2019s \u201cline\u201d, or risk losing all their funding.\u00a0\u00a0It brings a whole new meaning to the cheer, \u201cGo Bucks\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s real
