Macho-Macho Man<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The new Defense Secretary believes that the US military has lost its \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0\u00a0Pete Hegseth thinks that our military has gone \u201csoft\u201d, worrying more about our societal issues like gender identity, race and ethnic diversity than being \u201cWarriors\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Our modern forces, where the ability to pilot a drone over Afghanistan from Virginia is as important as a High Altitude, Low Opening parachute jump over Korea, now \u201cdepends\u201d on being a \u201cWarrior\u201d according to the Secretary.\u00a0\u00a0(I\u2019m humming the tune \u201cMacho, Macho, Man<\/a>\u201d by the Village People in the background).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Hegseth is waging a war on the US military, a war against the dreaded \u201cDiversity, Equity and Inclusion\u201d, better known by the initials \u201cDEI\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0Hegseth seems convinced that racial and ethnic minorities, women, gay and transgendered soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Guardians (members of the Space Corps) are weakening our defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it\u2019s no surprise that the two highest women in the US Defense establishment, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Franchetti and Commandant of the Coast Guard Admiral Fagan, were fired.\u00a0 \u00a0It also shouldn\u2019t surprise anyone that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Air Force General Brown was fired as well.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s Black, and he spoke out during the George Floyd controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Confederates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What kind of \u201cWarriors\u201d is Hegseth looking for?\u00a0\u00a0 Is his military to be dominated by \u201cgood ol\u2019 boys,\u201d white men, who \u201cknow\u201d how to fight?\u00a0\u00a0How far is Hegseth willing to go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fort Bragg in North Carolina was named after the failed Confederate General Braxton Bragg.\u00a0\u00a0 For over a century, the military celebrated the Confederate \u201clost cause\u201d, naming bases and facilities after generals in \u201cgray\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Recently, Fort Bragg was renamed by Congressional order, Fort Liberty.\u00a0\u00a0But that offended Hegseth\u2019s sense of Warrior Ethos (I guess he remembers Chickamauga, but forgets all of Bragg\u2019s failures).\u00a0\u00a0So he renamed Liberty back\u00a0\u00a0to Bragg, with a \u201cfig leaf\u201d of pretending the name honors a World War II Silver Star recipient, Ronald Bragg.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firing the women and the Black man, reviving good ol\u2019 Fort Bragg, started to right Hegseth\u2019s world. \u00a0\u00a0But to really build his \u201cWarrior Ethos\u201d military, he wants a thorough cleansing of the military image.\u00a0\u00a0Posters of women and minorities in combat roles were ripped down throughout the country.\u00a0\u00a0The words \u201cgay\u201d and \u201ctransgendered\u201d were scrubbed from the military manuals and online materials.\u00a0\u00a0He wants our Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines (and Guardians too) totally focused on being \u201cWarriors\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0I guess that means they are supposed to be mostly White men, who like women \u2013 to Hegseth that clearly matters (ask the woman he \u201cenjoyed\u201d, or assaulted, in 2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erasing History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So I guess we shouldn\u2019t be surprised that the \u201cthought police\u201d of the civilian defense establishment, (kind of like the DOGE kids) reached out to change history.\u00a0 \u00a0The \u201cthought police\u201d are busy erasing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, the courageous black men who broke the color barrier for fighter pilots in the US Army of World War II.\u00a0\u00a0And while they\u2019re \u201cchanging history\u201d, they are attacking another fundamental fact of World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0You see, one of the most famous aircraft in history has a \u201cDEI\u201d name:\u00a0\u00a0the Enola Gay.\u00a0\u00a0On August 6th<\/sup>, 1945, a US B-29 bomber took off from Tinian Island, a speck in the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 \u00a0It was piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets, the commander of the 509th<\/sup>\u00a0Bomb Group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The four engine aircraft was bound for Japan, to drop the first atomic bomb, nicknamed \u201cLittle Boy\u201d on Hiroshima.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tibbets was well aware of the gravity of this action.\u00a0\u00a0He even replaced the normal pilot of the B-29, taking direct control himself.\u00a0 \u00a0And he renamed the particular aircraft that would go down in world history after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all know \u201cthe rest of the story\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrong Thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But what is the Defense Secretary going to do?\u00a0\u00a0Here, written in a flash of light and the instant death of thousands is his most hated word:\u00a0\u00a0Gay.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Can there be anything more \u201cmacho\u201d more \u201cwarrior\u201d, than dropping an atom bomb?\u00a0\u00a0But there it is, \u201cEnola Gay\u201d burned into American and World memory.\u00a0\u00a0 The \u201cthought police\u201d tried to scrub that too.\u00a0\u00a0I hope there are good security guards at the Air and Space Museum on the Mall in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0There might be a \u201cmilitary operation\u201d, maybe using Seal Team Six,\u00a0\u00a0to break in and strike out the \u201cGay\u201d painted on the nose of the still proud B-29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no evidence that being a woman, or a gay man, or a transgendered person, impacts the modern military.\u00a0\u00a0What it does effect, is the mind of a man who sees the military as only those \u201cWarriors\u201d on the battlefield as \u201cmanly men\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0It was wrong when Confederate admirers kept the US military segregated through World War II until President Truman forced the change in 1948.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was wrong when women were denied combat roles before the 1990\u2019s, a wrong not righted fully until 2016.\u00a0\u00a0 And it was wrong when a soldier, sailor, or Marine had to hide their sexual preference, first completely, then under Clinton\u2019s \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d, until 2011.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Pete Hegseth’s “Warrior Ethos” cleansing is wrong now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
