Lincoln<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1983, one of my pole vaulters qualified to the National Junior Olympic track meet.\u00a0\u00a0The meet was on the campus of the University of Nebraska, located in Lincoln.\u00a0\u00a0We strapped poles to the side of the car, and headed out across the Great Plains of Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska.\u00a0\u00a0After a thousand miles, we arrived in one of the hottest spots in the Nation.\u00a0\u00a0Really, Lincoln, Nebraska at the end of July bakes in the summer sun, surrounded by hundreds of miles of corn fields.\u00a0\u00a0That raises the humidity, making it a \u201cperfect storm\u201d of heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meet didn\u2019t go well competitively.\u00a0 \u00a0But we did manage to find a great steakhouse, and catch a first run movie in the local theater.\u00a0\u00a0The movie was \u201cWarGames\u201d starring then-young Matthew Broderick.\u00a0\u00a0He was a teenaged computer hacker (by phone modem from his bedroom), in search of the best gaming computer to challenge.\u00a0\u00a0Without giving the whole movie away, Broderick manages to find a back door into the National Missile Defense computer.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cGame\u201d Broderick is playing, is a nuclear attack simulation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem, of course, is that the computer didn\u2019t know it was a game, and the nuclear defense system went on full alert.\u00a0\u00a0As the \u201cgame\u201d missiles descended on the Nation, a real nuclear response was about to be launched against a very real enemy. \u00a0\u00a0A child hacker was about to start World War III.\u00a0\u00a0You\u2019ll have to watch the movie for the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kids in the DOGE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lincoln, Nebraska; it was also the home to one of the \u201ckids\u201d who are the point of the spear of \u201cDOGE\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s the illegitimate government \u201cdepartment\u201d created by Donald Trump using an Executive Order.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cDOGE\u201d, the Department of Government Efficiency, is neither a Department nor a legal part of the government.\u00a0\u00a0But it is ruthlessly efficient. (OK, you have to be old enough to have attended the 1983 JO Nationals to know that the really ruthlessly efficient \u201cdepartment\u201d is Monty Python\u2019s Spanish Inquisition, with a fanatical devotion to Elon Musk<\/em>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elon Musk, one of the richest men in the world, heads \u201cDOGE\u201d (there wasn\u2019t enough room at the top for Vivek Ramaswamy to stay).\u00a0\u00a0 And he\u2019s brought in a \u201ccrack team\u201d of computer \u201cwhiz kids\u201d to extract information from government computers.\u00a0\u00a0One of those \u201ckids\u201d dropped out of the University of Nebraska.\u00a0\u00a0Another just got out of high school, and was enrolled in Northeastern University.\u00a0\u00a0Like the teenaged gamer of \u201cWar Games\u201d, these are the premier computer \u201chackers\u201d of our time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maturity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cpoint\u201d kids are between 19 and 24.\u00a0 \u00a0And they have names: Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Straotran.\u00a0\u00a0Ethan was a \u201chackathon\u201d contest\u201d runner-up.\u00a0\u00a0Akash went to Cal-Berkley, and was an engineering \u201cintern\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Edward just graduated from high school, but he was an intern at Musk\u2019s own Neuralink last summer.\u00a0\u00a0Luke dropped out of Nebraska, but he was an intern at Space-X, another Musk company.\u00a0\u00a0Gavin attended Cal-Berkley, but more recently worked for an AI company called Databricks.\u00a0\u00a0Killian (he goes by his last name) was an engineer at Jump Trading, specializing in algorithmic high frequency financial trades (Wired<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the guys sent into the Treasury Department to access the US payment system.\u00a0 \u00a0What\u2019s in that system:\u00a0\u00a0tax data, Medicare and Medicaid data; tens of millions of US citizens addresses and financial information.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t necessarily know why they need that data.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t worry \u2013 right?\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s only DOGE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These \u201cwhiz kids\u201d are also analyzing the US Office of Personnel Management (the office that controls government payrolls) and the General Services Administration (controls government property).\u00a0 \u00a0Don\u2019t be surprised if they are cross-referencing the millions of names and financial figures against political records publicly available \u2013 like voter registration and political campaign donations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Play<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What could possibly go wrong?\u00a0 \u00a0Why is it a concern that six, brilliant and obviously talented young men, all with direct links to Musk or conservative billionaire Peter Thiel (the Vice President\u2019s mentor) should all of a sudden gain this unfettered access and power over the US Government agencies?\u00a0\u00a0In a Nation founded on the concept of checks and balances, the guys (and it\u2019s all guys \u2013 Bro) have the ultimate power; the power of information, and no checks at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have my information.\u00a0 \u00a0They have your information.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201ckids\u201d can match tax information to political information to employment information.\u00a0\u00a0And they are loyal, to the \u201cmaster Bro\u201d, Elon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to be crass, but acne is still a concern.\u00a0\u00a0Who knows what the outcome will be, but an old (very old to these kids) movie form 1983 might be instructive.\u00a0\u00a0As Joshua, the computer in \u201cWarGames\u201d said:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cStrange Game.\u00a0\u00a0The only winning move is not to play<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
