Lucifer (whoo-hoo, whoo-hoo)<br>&#8216;Cause I&#8217;m in need of some restraint (whoo-hoo, whoo-hoo)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>The Rolling Stones &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GgnClrx8N2k\">Sympathy for the Devil<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criminals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Let\u2019s look at the definition of a criminal.\u00a0\u00a0 My Mother\u2019s ultimate source, the Oxford English Dictionary, defines a \u201ccrime\u201d as:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<em>An act or omission constituting an offence (usually a grave one) against an individual or state and punishable by law.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0So a \u201ccriminal\u201d is one who commits such an \u201coffence\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0(Mom was British, and so was her spelling, much to my demise in elementary school spelling tests.  \u201cThat\u2019s the way my MOM spells it!!!\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To split hairs just a bit, the key element in the definition is the undefined nature, \u201cusually a grave one\u201d, of crime.\u00a0\u00a0 Going 40 in a 35 MPH zone is an \u201coffence\u201d, but not necessarily a \u201ccrime\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not \u201cgrave\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In legal terms they are called \u201ccivil\u201d offenses;\u00a0\u00a0violation of regulation (like traffic laws) but not \u201ccriminal\u201d law.\u00a0\u00a0The difference:\u00a0\u00a0if I was driving 40 MPH in a 35 zone AND I was drunk was an alcohol level of .15, I\u2019ve committed the civil offense of speeding, but the criminal offense of driving while intoxicated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Crossing the United States border illegally can be both a civil offense, and a criminal offense.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a problem when the leaders of the Executive Branch of the United States say: \u201cWe are only going to deport criminals.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Is the single act of crossing the US Border \u201cwithout papers\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2025\/01\/27\/with-out-papers\/\">see the\u00a0\u00a0essay from earlier this week<\/a>) criminal?\u00a0\u00a0Is it still criminal if you\u2019re in a canoe in the border waters along the Minnesota\/Canada border?\u00a0\u00a0How about if you walk across the Rio Grande River (it\u2019s pretty shallow in mid-summer) in Big Bend National Park in Texas?\u00a0\u00a0Or finally, what about the Canadian border from Point Roberts, Washington?\u00a0\u00a0Point Roberts is in the US, but its 1200 residents can only be accessed by land from Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ICE Raids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So when the new \u201cImmigration Czar\u201d, Tom Homan, claims that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids are \u201conly designed to round-up criminals\u201d, what does he really mean?\u00a0\u00a0Look, pretty much all Americans are in favor of sending \u201cmurdering gang members\u201d out of the country.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s an easy out:\u00a0\u00a0instead of long trials and paying for prison sentences, just send them back to \u201cwhere they come from\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But Homan has made his definition clear:\u00a0\u00a0if someone is undocumented, therefore in the US \u201cillegally\u201d, he considers them a criminal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The ICE raids of the last weekend show what he means.\u00a0\u00a0Fully half of the immigrants rounded up were actual criminals, accused or convicted of committing felonies.\u00a0\u00a0But that means that the other half were, in fact, only guilty of the civil offense of crossing the border \u201cwithout papers\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But those folks didn\u2019t get a pass.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They too were loaded up on military air transports, and flown out of the country.\u00a0\u00a0It makes the \u201cnumbers\u201d look better on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And that\u2019s caused panic in the migrant community.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many families live in \u201cmixed status\u201d households:&nbsp;&nbsp;some US citizens, some legal migrants, some without papers.&nbsp;&nbsp;What happens when a child goes to school, and Mom and Dad are picked up in an \u201cICE Raid\u201d for being undocumented.&nbsp;&nbsp;Who will pick the child up?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What if the child is a US citizen, is it still \u201cOK\u201d to deport the parents?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jobs&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And what about all of the job categories where the undocumented are employed?\u00a0\u00a0Who will pick the \u201ctruck crops\u201d in Florida and California, who will roof the houses damaged by hurricanes or fires, who will clean the hotel rooms, or butcher the chickens?\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s easy for the Administration to say:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s more jobs for Americans\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But, to be brutally honest, Americans don\u2019t want those jobs.\u00a0\u00a0Undocumented workers are doing what the newest entries in American life have always done: the tough work, the brutal work in the sun, the bloody work at the  processor.
