{"id":7483,"date":"2024-11-14T08:05:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T13:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7483"},"modified":"2024-11-14T08:05:38","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T13:05:38","slug":"principal-at-the-restroom-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/11\/14\/principal-at-the-restroom-door\/","title":{"rendered":"Principal  at the Restroom Door"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>Much of this essay was published almost eight years ago, when I first started writing in \u201cOur America\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But here in Ohio, the question of where transgendered kids are allowed to \u201cpee\u201d is back.\u00a0\u00a0The lame duck State legislature thinks this issue is  more important than the myriad of other problems Ohio faces, from drought conditions to road construction to rampant political corruption.\u00a0 So instead of fixing those, they  pick on the kids most likely to be victims.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>The facts:\u00a0\u00a03.3% of high school students identify as transgendered.\u00a0\u00a0In Ohio that means somewhere around 17,000 kids.\u00a0 That would be about 12 per high school if they all went to school.  \u00a0And some are in public schools, some in private.  But many are \u201conline\u201d or home schooled, so the number per school is less.  But, Wednesday, the Ohio State Legislature went out of their way to point those few kids out, and make their life even harder.\u00a0\u00a0Here in Ohio, the bullies are in the State House.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Made-Up Issue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">George Takei of \u201cStar Trek\u201d fame, made a statement about transgender kids. .He spoke about their being forced to use a \u201cbiological\u201d restroom rather than their \u201cidentified\u201d restroom.  He said, \u201cThis is a made up issue\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I spent 36 years in public high and middle schools, and had the opportunity to interact with transgender kids.\u00a0\u00a0They are not \u201ca danger to our children\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0First of all, they are \u201cour children\u201d, often children most in need of protection.\u00a0\u00a0Second, they are kids:\u00a0\u00a0kids who have made a most difficult decision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They recognize that their brain\u2019s sexual identity and their biological sexual identity are not the same.\u00a0\u00a0It is such a powerful force that they are willing to face all of the barriers that society marshals against them, just as the kids who find they are gay or bisexual do.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not a \u201cchoice\u201d, it\u2019s a recognition of who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">By the way, no matter how old you are now, they were in your school too.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, until recently, those kids were forced to live closeted lives, lying to everyone (often including their parents, friends and even themselves) about who they are.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many still do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School Problems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Schools have been aware of this issue for years.\u00a0\u00a0Many schools have quietly taken care of the problem:\u00a0\u00a0transgender girls (biological boys) who dress like girls and act like girls, use the girls restroom and no one is the wiser.\u00a0\u00a0The same is true with transgender boys (they go in the stalls, as do many cisgender boys). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And that argument about locker rooms and showers is from a totally different generation. \u00a0Today\u2019s kids don\u2019t \u201cget naked\u201d in school.\u00a0\u00a0Most school shower rooms (other than for wrestling teams, where almost all kids wear some form of swimsuit) have become storerooms.\u00a0\u00a0And the vast majority of kids don\u2019t have a problem with any of this.\u00a0\u00a0They accept the differences of their friends.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the adults who are hung up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Frontier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Transgender is the new frontier of identity law.\u00a0\u00a0Our society has reached a general understanding about gay and bisexual people; we have removed most of the laws that discriminated against their conduct.\u00a0\u00a0In public schools the era of &#8220;being gay means being bullied&#8221; has changed. The school administration is now protecting the victims, rather than enabling the perpetrators (that wasn\u2019t always true, \u201cin the day\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0While incidents still occur, in general, kids accept their friends as they are \u2013 or don\u2019t deal with them at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Transgender kids (and adults) are not \u201cmolesters\u201d sneaking into the opposites sex\u2019s restroom to \u201ccatch a peep\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They are the victims.\u00a0\u00a0As a society, protecting the civil rights of folks is not a state\u2019s rights issue.\u00a0\u00a0The fine old white men in the State House today, argue that states should be able to determine these rights.\u00a0\u00a0But that\u2019s an old argument, a holdover from the Civil War, and it shouldn\u2019t pass legal muster, or have a place in a modern society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Amendment to the Constitution and the multiple civil rights acts passed since state:\u00a0\u00a0a citizen of the United States enjoys the rights and protections of all US citizens in every state.\u00a0\u00a0We should not have different rights in Pennsylvania than we have in North Carolina, or Ohio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And this should apply to all forms of discrimination, including transgender folks.\u00a0\u00a0We must NOT discriminate against the most fragile members of our society, children who are discovering that their differences are so much greater than their peers.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s got to be hard enough, without the government (or the Principal) checking their genitals at the restroom door.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much of this essay was published almost eight years ago, when I first started writing in \u201cOur America\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But here in Ohio, the question of where transgendered kids are allowed to \u201cpee\u201d is back.\u00a0\u00a0The lame duck State legislature thinks this issue is more important than the myriad of other problems Ohio faces, from drought conditions to &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/11\/14\/principal-at-the-restroom-door\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Principal  at the Restroom Door&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7483","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
