When did the Democratic Party of Joe Kennedy and Richard Daley become \u201cgood guys\u201d?).\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The old Democratic joke, \u201cvote early and vote often\u201d is, like Bill Cosby\u2019s funniest lines; forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLast week\u2019s election results felt overwhelming. I\u00a0\u00a0described my reaction to a friend as:\u00a0\u00a0crushed, devastated, infuriated, and traumatized.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s not last week anymore.\u00a0\u00a0So Democrats have to move on.\u00a0\u00a0And there is one important \u201cstatistic\u201d to remember:\u00a0\u00a0almost half of Americans wanted Kamala Harris for President.\u00a0\u00a0In the end, once California finally counts all of her votes (the Bear Flag State is more the Sloth Flag when it comes to elections), it\u2019s likely that Trump won the popular vote by less than one percent.\u00a0\u00a0So the \u201coverwhelming, crushing, traumatizing\u201d Red Wave, isn\u2019t the electoral mandate that we thought, and that MAGA Republicans claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Friction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
And we can certainly hope that the House flips to Democrats.\u00a0\u00a0The votes are in, it\u2019s not a question of action, it\u2019s just a matter of waiting (Sloth Flag and a few others).\u00a0\u00a0However the House shakes out, it\u2019s going to be a razor thin margin of control, a vote or two between Mike Johnson or Hakeem Jeffries.\u00a0\u00a0The House will serve to create “friction” to Trump’s plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As \u201cgood Americans\u201d, some will want to stand with the new\/old President, supporting him out of loyalty to the nation. But, there is one lesson we can learn from the MAGA Republicans. Even in the middle of the pandemic, even after the Insurrection (that memory will be buried deep in the next four years), I didn\u2019t see MAGA leaders or followers lining up to support Joe Biden. As my Mom would say; what\u2019s good for \u201ctheir Goose\u201d, is fine for \u201cour Gander\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had the right answer in 2017: RESIST. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
RESIST<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019m not calling for a Revolution, for Harris\/Walz\u2019s flags on the Capitol steps.\u00a0\u00a0But we do need to create friction, resistance; to every inhumane or anti-democratic action that the Trump Administration tries to inflict.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, if they start rounding up migrants for deportation: RESIST. Make the 49.5% of Americans who chose against this feel like they are heard. As we did with the child-separation program six years ago, shine a light on Trumpian inhumanity. Make the historic comparisons to other American atrocities: the Trail of Tears, the Tulsa Riot, Japanese\/American Internment, \u201cOperation Wetback\u201d, Child-Separation. Let Americans and the world see that he does not represent us all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If America begins to abandon Ukraine and\/or NATO: RESIST. Stand up for what\u2019s right, regardless of the flawed autocrat-supporting views of MAGA. \u201cLet the word go forth\u201d that while the leadership of the United States wants to abandon our \u201cShining City on the Hill\u201d, almost half of Americans do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your local school or library or university is pressured to bow to MAGA-idealism: RESIST.\u00a0\u00a0The Electoral College does not apply to local elections.\u00a0\u00a0Organize what I still believe is the majority of Americans who do not stand for censorship, suppression, or screaming intimidation.\u00a0\u00a0The billionaire sponsored, Steve Bannon plan for overwhelming America starts at the local level.\u00a0\u00a0So can ours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if you\u2019re local sheriff turns out to be a \u201cConstitutional Sheriff\u201d, another focus of the MAGA world,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0RESIST.\u00a0\u00a0If he (almost always he) decides to take unilateral action to support MAGA theology, protest.\u00a0\u00a0Call him out for stepping out of his role of protecting local citizens; make\u00a0\u00a0him pay a public and political price for abusing the authorities of his office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be Heard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t worry; they\u2019ll be lots of chances to make your voice heard. The only \u201csin\u201d is to remain silent, or small, or to take the \u201csafe\u201d way out, when injustice is clear. We must make the cost transparent. As Martin Niemoller wrote from a Nazi concentration camp:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First they came for the Communists.
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists.
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists.
And I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews.
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me.
And there was no one left to speak out for me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nSpeak out!! Find that old \u201cRESIST!\u201d t-shirt from 2018 buried in the drawer. Go buy the poster board and Sharpies to make your signs. We know what we need to do, and as hard as it is to \u201cdo it again\u201d, it must be done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
