{"id":7458,"date":"2024-11-04T07:19:24","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7458"},"modified":"2024-11-04T07:19:27","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:19:27","slug":"alea-iacta-est","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/11\/04\/alea-iacta-est\/","title":{"rendered":"Alea Iacta Est"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<em>ah-lee-ah, ack-ta, esst)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caesar at the Rubicon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve all played boards games, when it comes down to a throw of the dice.\u00a0\u00a0You might need a five, but there\u2019s no controlling that.\u00a0\u00a0No matter how you hold, twist or turn, once the die leaves your hand, there\u2019s no predicting the outcome.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s \u201calea iacta est\u201d in Latin, the die is cast.\u00a0\u00a0Whatever is going to happen, will happen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phrase comes from Julius Caesar.\u00a0\u00a0He was with his Legion, north of the Rubicon River, when the government in Rome ordered him to leave his army there and come home.\u00a0\u00a0If he crossed the Rubicon with his troops, he was in rebellion against the Republic.\u00a0\u00a0 Caesar determined to challenge the government, and the Legion crossed the river.\u00a0\u00a0As he crossed, he said, \u201calea iacta est\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0You probably know the rest of the story, Caesar became dictator of Rome, was assassinated, and ultimately the Republic fell and the Roman Empire began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Out of My Hands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlea Iacta Est\u201d became a traditional phrase for me in my first year at Denison University.\u00a0\u00a0In those days, a half-century ago (oh my gosh), passing most college courses depended on two tests, the mid-term and the final exams.\u00a0\u00a0After three months of attending class, those made all the difference.\u00a0\u00a0So studying was a big deal, with days of preparation for a timed two hours of writing in \u201cblue books\u201d for each class.\u00a0\u00a0My friends and I would spend late nights in vacant classrooms, smoking cigars (it was legal inside back then), reviewing and cramming texts and legal pads full of notes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And finally, in the early morning hours when the last questions were answered (and the last cigars put out) we were done.&nbsp;&nbsp;As we walked back to our dorm at the far end of campus, we stopped outside of the Chapel, looked out over darkened Granville, and tossed pennies into the woods far down the hill, saying \u201cAlea Iacta Est\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;The die was cast; no more studying to do, just a few hours\u2019 sleep and show up in class with sharpened pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fifty Years<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phrase has followed my life.&nbsp;&nbsp;After months of political campaigning, through the sleepless nights leading to the Monday before election day, there was a final moment:&nbsp;&nbsp;nothing more to do \u2013 \u201calea iacta est\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then later, as a coach, after months of careful preparation, after the last practice (when rest was as important as prep), again, \u201calea iacta est\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here I am, a half-century later, on the Monday before what seems to me the most important Presidential election in American history.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am retired; no longer politicking, or teaching, or coaching.&nbsp;&nbsp;What I do now is write.&nbsp;&nbsp;I try to describe, persuade and educate.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yesterday I made my final argument for Kamala Harris (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/11\/03\/yes-but-what-about\/\">Yes, But What About<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as those who know me will recognize, I\u2019ve always have one more thing to say. Here it is:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I believe in America.\u00a0\u00a0I believe in the ultimate wisdom of the American people. As Lincoln (<em>a Republican<\/em>) said, \u201c\u2026 You can\u2019t fool all of the people, all of the time\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And I believe in the American experiment, the flawed but perfecting Constitution, that survived the Civil War and has, from the beginning, expanded the rights of our citizens.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Even with setbacks and mistakes, we continue to become  \u201c\u2026a more perfect union\u201d (<em>Madison, Democratic\/Republican<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Believe in America<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter the outcome, &#8220;(T)he American people, in their righteous might, will win through\u201d (<em>FDR, a Democrat<\/em>).\u00a0\u00a0To use an old coaching expression, \u201cthe sun will come up\u201d, no matters who wins on Tuesday (<em>some old coach<\/em> <em>or campaign manager<\/em>).\u00a0\u00a0And what we will have to do as Americans to save our &#8220;experiment in democracy&#8221; depends on the outcome.\u00a0\u00a0Either way, \u201cAsk not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country\u201d (<em>JFK, a Democrat<\/em>).\u00a0\u00a0If we fail this test, there will be a whole lot to do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve had nine years to study, and now it\u2019s time.\u00a0\u00a0Time to take the test and see our grade.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve cast my vote, and this is the last essay before election day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not the wee hours of the morning, and I\u2019m not throwing pennies at the neighbors.&nbsp;&nbsp;But \u201cAlea Iacta est\u201d; the die is cast, for me, and for America.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now we just wait for the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(ah-lee-ah, ack-ta, esst) Caesar at the Rubicon We\u2019ve all played boards games, when it comes down to a throw of the dice.\u00a0\u00a0You might need a five, but there\u2019s no controlling that.\u00a0\u00a0No matter how you hold, twist or turn, once the die leaves your hand, there\u2019s no predicting the outcome.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s \u201calea iacta est\u201d in Latin, the &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/11\/04\/alea-iacta-est\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Alea Iacta Est&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7458","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
