{"id":7430,"date":"2024-10-21T08:35:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T12:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7430"},"modified":"2024-10-21T08:35:58","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T12:35:58","slug":"two-dollar-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/10\/21\/two-dollar-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Dollar Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accepting a Bribe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This story is as old as the Two Dollar Bill.&nbsp;&nbsp;By the way, Two Dollar Bills, with Thomas Jefferson on the front and Monticello on the back, still show up occasionally.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing still prints them, millions of them each year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bep.gov\/media\/1111\/download?inline\">BEM<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I know, I know; most of you are thinking that you haven\u2019t even seen a One Dollar Bill recently.&nbsp;&nbsp;My wallet, which always used to have \u201cemergency cash\u201d, is now filled in with plastic.&nbsp;&nbsp;The local Kentucky Fried Chicken store recently gained notoriety as the first in Pataskala that&nbsp;<strong>doesn\u2019t accept cash.&nbsp;<\/strong>That\u2019s legal, by the way, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/faqs\/currency_12772.htm\">Federal Reserve<\/a>). Cash is seldom a part of my life anymore.&nbsp;&nbsp;But even when it is, it doesn\u2019t often include a Two Dollar Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Why not?&nbsp;&nbsp;Why are Two Dollar Bills, \u201codd\u201d?&nbsp;&nbsp;The answer goes back to the late 1800\u2019s.&nbsp;&nbsp;Politics then was dominated by big city \u201cMachines\u201d, the most famous one called Tammany Hall in New York .&nbsp;&nbsp;Government services were \u201ctransactional\u201d; if a voter wanted fire service, or police protection, or the holes in the road fixed; they needed to demonstrate \u201csupport\u201d for Tammany candidates.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, it was an implicit contractual deal:&nbsp;&nbsp;vote for Tammany, or don\u2019t call the fire department.&nbsp;&nbsp;In those days, the \u201ccontract\u201d was sealed with a Two Dollar Bill (today worth the equivalent of Seventy Dollars).&nbsp;&nbsp;But even in those \u201cbad-old-days\u201d, selling the vote was illegal, tantamount to accepting a bribe for an \u201cofficial\u201d act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everyone Knows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That particular denomination became symbolic for a crime, selling the vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;When a consumer spent a Two Dollar Bill, \u201ceveryone knew\u201d (to use a current Republican talking point) that they gave up that American privilege for cash.&nbsp;&nbsp;So using the bill went \u201cout of style\u201d, so much so that in the mid-1960\u2019s production was stopped for a while.&nbsp;&nbsp;And today, many Americans see Two Dollar Bills as \u201crare\u201d (really not) and hoard them right beside their can, or in my case, small barrel, of pennies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Which brings us to Elon Musk, the wealthiest man in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here\u2019s his newest \u201cdeal\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It only applies to registered voters in the swing states:&nbsp;Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;If they agree to sign his \u201cFirst and Second Amendment\u201d petition, supporting \u201cfreedom\u201d, and implicitly, Donald Trump; they are entered in the daily drawing for One Million Dollars.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What\u2019s the point?&nbsp;&nbsp;To be eligible, you must be a registered voter in a swing state, willing to support Trump (<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/20\/us-news\/elon-musks-1-million-petition-giveaway-how-to-cash-in\/\">New York Post<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;The \u201ccontract\u201d is the signature on the petition, making you eligible to win One Million Dollars, awarded every-single-day until the election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buying Votes&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Elon Musk has a net worth just shy of Two Hundred Seventy Billion dollars (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/investing\/012715\/5-richest-people-world.asp#:~:text=Elon%20Musk%2C%20CEO%20of%20Tesla,Gates%2C%20and%20Oracle's%20Larry%20Ellison.\">Investopedia<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0So giving away sixteen million just isn\u2019t a big deal to him,  less than one percent of his total wealth.\u00a0\u00a0But most of us would agree, that a million dollars would be a transformative amount to \u201cwin\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The question is, just like the Two Dollar Bills of yore; is this legal, or is he literally, buying votes?\u00a0\u00a0In order to be eligible to win you must be a registered voter in a swing state.\u00a0\u00a0Musk trying to \u201cbuy\u201d votes, getting them to register and agree for the purpose of \u201cwinning\u201d a million dollars.\u00a0\u00a0So the answer to that question is, of course he is.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;Musk points out:&nbsp;\u201cI think this is kind of fun, and you know, it seems like a good use of money basically\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/20\/elon-musk-offers-1-million-a-day-to-entice-swing-state-voters-.html\">CNBC<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;But it\u2019s against federal law to bribe folks to vote or register to vote (USC&nbsp;\u00a718, 597).&nbsp;&nbsp;And, unlike a current Two Dollar Bill, a million dollars is a serious bribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blurry Lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We are in an era where the lines between legal and illegal campaign activities are blurred.&nbsp;&nbsp;It used to be \u201callowed\u201d to protest election results in Court, but \u201cunacceptable\u201d to lead protests and use violence to try to overturn the election.&nbsp;&nbsp;That has gradually changed; in modern times starting with the \u201cBrooks Brothers Riot\u201d in 2000, when Republican operatives disrupted ballot counting in Florida in order to try to gain election for George W Bush.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Literally billions of dollars will be spent on this year\u2019s Presidential election, over $30 per vote for 150 million voters.&nbsp;&nbsp;The \u201ccash line\u201d is blurred.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What was the stigma of the Two Dollar Bill, now becomes the privilege of using a vote to win a million.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s unlikely that Elon Musk will ever be held accountable for a crime; he can afford the lawyers to keep litigation going for years.&nbsp;&nbsp;And if he is held accountable, maybe he\u2019ll be fined a few hundred thousand dollars, \u201cchump-change\u201d to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But all that misses the point.\u00a0\u00a0Our votes are supposed to be our \u201cbest judgment\u201d for what\u2019s good for us, and the Nation.\u00a0\u00a0They shouldn\u2019t be for sale, not for a million;
