Old Glory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s one of my favorite topics!!!  Let\u2019s talk about American History \u2013 specifically the history of American flags!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a few historic flags I\u2019d like to \u201czoom-in\u201d on, flags somewhat obscured by the lens of time, but now back in the \u201ccommon vernacular\u201d of our discussion.  The first is the actual flag of the United States of America, the Stars and Stripes (all fifty stars for fifty states, thirteen white and red stripes representing the original thirteen states that signed the Constitution).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stars and Stripes<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not quite the \u201cStar Spangled Banner\u201d Flag (fifteen stars, fifteen stripes \u2013 designed before the they realized the pin-stripe effect of adding a stripe for each state).  And it\u2019s not the \u201cIwo Jima\u201d flag either, thirteen stripes but forty-eight stars.  It\u2019s the flag that\u2019s represented the United States since 1960, when Hawaii entered the Union as a state.  And it\u2019s the flag that could still see more stars:  Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia to mention two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorld War II\u201d Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout US history, flying the Stars and Stripes upside down was a sign of extreme emergency.\u00a0\u00a0But in our recent history, the upside down flag has been appropriated as a symbol by the extreme MAGA crowd (as opposed to the only \u201ccrazy\u201d MAGA crowd?).\u00a0\u00a0The Stars and Stripes upside down (The World Turned Upside Down, played by the British as they surrendered at Yorktown) was outside the Capitol on January 6th<\/sup>, used to beat the Capitol and DC Police officers.\u00a0\u00a0But it wasn\u2019t the only flag there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extreme Distress \u2013 US Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course there were a whole lot of \u201cTrump\u201d flags.  But there also were some other traditional American flags, some specific to the groups that gathered to overturn the election and support the losing President. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic Flags<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There was the \u201cBetsy Ross\u201d flag, thirteen stripes with thirteen stars in a circle.  It\u2019s been the traditional flag of the American Revolution, the flag flown over George Washington\u2019s army.  It\u2019s been absconded by the \u201cThree Percenters\u201d (with a Roman Numeral III added) a far-right extremist group.  Five years ago Nike marketed a Betsy Ross Flag sneaker, triggering a whole protest against racism.  I wrote an essay (Flags and Shoes<\/a>) about it at the time.  Nike didn\u2019t have the stomach for the fight, and the shoes \u201cwent away\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Betsy Ross  Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was the famous \u201cDon\u2019t Tread on Me\u201d snake flag. officially called the \u201cGadsen Flag\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In the first decade of this century, the Tea-Party movement took it as \u201ctheir\u201d symbol, and it is often used as a \u201cprivate\u201d symbol of MAGA\u2019ism.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the \u201cinsider\u201d information, rather than just put a Trump flag in front of the house.\u00a0\u00a0Now, when you see one you\u2019re an \u201cinsider\u201d too!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t Tread on Me Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, there\u2019s the Confederate Battle Flag (actually the flag of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia).  That flag became the symbol of the Ku Klux Klan, and continues to represent the white extremist movements.  But it also became the symbol of \u201ccountry-boys\u201d, and can be seen in a lot of Country music songs and videos in the past forty years.  Lynrd Skynrd and Hank Williams Jr (you can buy a Battle Flag with Hank\u2019s face in the middle) are two examples.  Seriously though, in the Civil War a major goal of the Confederacy was to march the Battle Flag through the Capitol.  It didn\u2019t happen in four years of  that war, nor in one hundred and fifty-five years of American history afterwards.  But it did happen on January 6th<\/sup>, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insiders Know<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This week we have another American flag emerging as an \u201cundercover\u201d representation of the MAGA movement.  This is the \u201cPine Tree\u201d or \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag, originally designed for the first Continental ships of war during the Revolution.  It shows a Pine Tree, with the words \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d or \u201cAppeal to God\u201d written above it.  But today it is symbolic of Christian Nationalism, a growing extremist movement that erroneously sees the United States as founded as a Christian Nation (it was, in fact, established diametrically opposite, as a secular nation).   It\u2019s another \u201cinsider\u201d flag.  Wink-wink, nudge-nudge; only those \u201cin the know\u201d knew.  Now you do too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Appeal to Heaven Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course this is really about that ultimate \u201cinsider\u201d, the Justice of the United States Supreme Court Samuel Alito.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s been \u201cwinking-winking, nudging-nudging\u201d to those \u201cin the know\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We all knew he was a conservative Justice, but we now know he\u2019s been \u201csignaling\u201d the MAGA-extremists that he\u2019s \u201cone of the boys\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0First it was the \u201cdistress flag\u201d flown in front of his house in the week between the Insurrection and the Inauguration.\u00a0\u00a0Now it\u2019s the \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag flown over his vacation home on the Jersey Shore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the Justice could argue that it was a \u201cnaval\u201d flag, and he was just honoring the few, proud, Continental Naval forces.\u00a0\u00a0But he could have done that \u201chonoring\u201d with the official ensign of the early Navy, the \u201cGrand Union Flag\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Instead he chose the loaded \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag, with all the baggage of Christian Nationalism that we hope our Judicial System would avoid.\u00a0\u00a0He puts his own extreme political views up front, raised to salute in front of his homes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grand Union Flag<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he\u2019s so anxious to have a \u201cpersonal\u201d flag \u2013 he could put the \u201cSeal\u201d of the Court on a flag and fly it.  That would be a real \u201cinsider\u201d flag \u2013 without declaring his alliance to insurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
