{"id":7103,"date":"2024-05-10T08:47:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T12:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7103"},"modified":"2024-05-10T08:47:26","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T12:47:26","slug":"pieces-of-pie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/05\/10\/pieces-of-pie\/","title":{"rendered":"Pieces of Pie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Old Guy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sometimes I feel like an \u201cold guy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Like yesterday, I had to ask a young coach how to take \u201cscreenshot\u201d on my IPhone so I could send an image in a text.\u00a0\u00a0He was gracious, but I\u2019m sure felt the same way that I did explaining the TV remote control to my Dad.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cshot\u201d got sent, (and I didn\u2019t manage to call 9-11 in the process), but, definitely I was an \u201cold guy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Back when I was growing up, TV\u2019s went from giant boxes with tiny black and white screens to smaller boxes with colorful screens, and there were three choices in television news.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It was either the Huntley-Brinkley Report on NBC, Walter Cronkite on CBS, or young Peter Jennings on ABC. In my youth, we went the \u201cway\u201d that Dad\u2019s TV station went.&nbsp;&nbsp;We were mostly a Huntley-Brinkley \u201chouse\u201d, but there were a couple years when Dad went with ABC, and we got to meet Peter Jennings.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a little different when you\u2019ve said hello to the man who tells you the state of the nation and world every night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sliced Up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019m sure there are some people still loyal to their \u201cnetwork\u201d news.&nbsp;&nbsp;I still feel \u201cclose\u201d to NBC, now led by Lester Holt.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s what Mom and Dad used to watch (an earlier essay \u2013&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2021\/12\/12\/watching-brian\/\">Watching Brian<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>The sign of our modern political era is that I don\u2019t see Lester or the network news that often.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m still watching, but it\u2019s a derivative of NBC News, MSNBC.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fact that I haven\u2019t seen Lester Holt in live coverage for years tells everything about what\u2019s happened to American\u2019s consumption of television, and as importantly, social media and cell phone news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you think of traditional broadcast media news, you start with a pie sliced into three pieces. (Sure, there was always PBS, but they had a very small piece of the pie, one made without sugar or fattening ingredients).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But the \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d today is now sliced into very narrow pieces, perhaps so thin that, like a real pie, the pieces fall apart before you even get them on the plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The three main networks still exist.\u00a0\u00a0But the \u201ctelevision news\u201d business is now sliced up.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s MSNBC and CNBC, CNN and CNN International, Fox, and Fox Business, Newsmax and OANN; and there\u2019s also \u201cCheddar\u201d and News Nation, NBC NOW, and ABC and CBS Live.\u00a0\u00a0And then there\u2019s the \u201cdirect\u201d news \u2013 on YouTube and Tik Tok and all of the other live sources.\u00a0\u00a0And finally, you can get \u201cyour news\u201d directly from individuals, from Mark Levin and Tucker Carlson to Marc Elias and Simon Rosenberg (two of my favorites).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Part of any \u201cdiscussion\u201d of American politics and events is based on some common agreement.&nbsp;&nbsp;We have a \u201chistory\u201d that we share, events that we mutually reacted to, ideals that we hold important.&nbsp;&nbsp;But in our fractured world, none of those things are true, anymore.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even such a basic tenet of American history, that we rebelled against a sovereign king to create a \u201cDemocratic\/Republic\u201d, is now in question.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Supreme Court is seriously (seriously?) considering the question of whether the President of the United States is sovereign; immune from criminal prosecution for his\/her actions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Attorneys arguing for immunity pointed to George Washington and Alexander Hamilton for precedent and support.&nbsp;&nbsp;There was once a time, not long ago, when we all believed the exact opposite.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of us still do, but it is no longer a \u201ccommon\u201d fact.&nbsp;&nbsp;Washington and Hamilton must be spinning in their graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Where we get our information determines what we believe.\u00a0\u00a0We now all have \u201cseparate\u201d sources, based on age, habit, peer pressure, and \u2013 the saddest part \u2013 what we \u201cwant\u201d to hear.\u00a0\u00a0We find what we want to believe, then turn to sources to affirm that \u201cwant\u201d; whether it\u2019s true or not.\u00a0\u00a0Kelly Ann Conway, former and future advisor to Donald Trump, said it best in an interview with then NBC\u2019s Meet the Press host Chuck Todd in 2017.\u00a0\u00a0They were discussing President Trump\u2019s inaugural crowd size, clearly exaggerated by Press Secretary Sean Spicer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Conway told Todd:\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u201cYou&#8217;re saying it&#8217;s a falsehood and Sean Spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Todd responded:\u00a0<em>\u00a0\u201cAlternative facts are not facts. They are falsehoods.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Conway retorted:\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u201cIf we&#8217;re going to keep referring to the press secretary in those types of terms I think we&#8217;re going to have to rethink our relationship here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Worm Turns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here we are, eight years later.&nbsp;&nbsp;Conway\u2019s \u201calternative facts\u201d are now \u201ctruth\u201d to&nbsp;&nbsp;tens-of-millions of Americans.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We now know that \u201cfact\u201d and \u201cfalsehood\u201d, here in the 2020\u2019s, are no longer absolute terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are relative, depending on what \u201cpiece of the pie\u201d is your source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>So, what is it about third party candidates for President?&nbsp;&nbsp;Ross Perot had a significant following in 1992, when he dropped out of the race.&nbsp;&nbsp;He stated his reason as masked men attacking his home and endangering his daughter.&nbsp;&nbsp;A week later he re-entered the race, but the damage was done.&nbsp;&nbsp;He never had that level of voter support again.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>This week, Bobby Kennedy Jr released that he had a dead worm in his head, one that ate a portion of his brain before it died.&nbsp;&nbsp;It might be true, but it\u2019s certainly not likely to increase his political support \u2013 \u201cOh, I\u2019m voting for Bobby, even though he\u2019s a worm-eaten former heroin addict who doesn\u2019t take vaccines\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;And yesterday, Donald Trump went on Truth Social to \u201ccall out\u201d Kennedy for being a \u201cfake\u201d anti-vaxxer.&nbsp;&nbsp;The son of my hero, Bobby Kennedy Senior, might be a lot of things (perhaps thanks to the worm; more likely the heroin) but surely his one bona fide is as THE preeminent voice against vaccination.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just another Trump \u201calternative fact\u201d, I guess.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old Guy Sometimes I feel like an \u201cold guy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Like yesterday, I had to ask a young coach how to take \u201cscreenshot\u201d on my IPhone so I could send an image in a text.\u00a0\u00a0He was gracious, but I\u2019m sure felt the same way that I did explaining the TV remote control to my Dad.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cshot\u201d got &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/05\/10\/pieces-of-pie\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Pieces of Pie&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
