{"id":7100,"date":"2024-05-08T08:52:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T12:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7100"},"modified":"2024-05-08T08:52:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T12:52:53","slug":"what-aint-broke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/05\/08\/what-aint-broke\/","title":{"rendered":"What Ain\u2019t Broke"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ohio \u2013 The Heart of it All<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hey OHIO!!&nbsp;&nbsp;You\u2019ve heard it time and time again, shouted from the State House steps: \u201cOHIO HAS THE SAFEST VOTING AND ELECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So is it true?&nbsp;&nbsp;Well, here\u2019s one measure:&nbsp;&nbsp;5,974,121 votes were cast in 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;Out of that number, 27 were cast illegally and charged with a crime (<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elections-ohio-donald-trump-presidential-elections-state-elections-fe7cd8689f49201b3524cf26662fbef4\">AP<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;For you math \u201cgeeks\u201d, that\u2019s .000452%.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those 27 votes did not impact the outcome of any election in the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;And this was in the \u201cPandemic Election\u201d, when Republicans decried&nbsp;&nbsp;(and are still crying about) the \u201clooseness\u201d of the election process.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here&#8217;s the deal, Ohio.&nbsp;&nbsp;When Republicans say elections are \u201cquestionable\u201d, they\u2019re lying.&nbsp;&nbsp;They know that Ohio\u2019s elections are secure.&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s an old saying, \u201cDon\u2019t fix what ain\u2019t broke\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So when Republicans in the State House put out a two-hundred and fifty page bill to \u201csecure the elections\u201d, what are they fixing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voter Suppression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s another axiom of elections:&nbsp;&nbsp;the more restrictions on voting, the more difficult voting becomes, the longer it takes to vote, the more hoops there are to register and vote; the more likely Republicans are to win.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why is that?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s simple economics.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Folks with less money tend to have less flexibility in their voting hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hourly workers can\u2019t just \u201ctake off\u201d to vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;And they can\u2019t wait hours in line, the situation in many urban areas of Ohio.&nbsp;&nbsp;And they can\u2019t afford day-care for their kids while they are voting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those voters are overwhelmingly Democratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ohio\u2019s proposed \u201csecurity enhancements\u201d include electronic comparisons of picture identifications.\u00a0\u00a0This creates added requirements for polling places, leading to \u201cconsolidating\u201d precinct polls into larger facilities.\u00a0\u00a0Instead of folks being able to walk to their local precinct, in many cases they are required to find transportation to a \u201cmass poll\u201d farther away.\u00a0\u00a0(This happens in suburban Ohio as well.\u00a0\u00a0Here in Pataskala, there are multiple\u00a0\u00a0precincts that vote in a church only accessible by car).\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t have a car \u2013 can\u2019t find a ride with someone else \u2013 can\u2019t vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The same is true with \u201cpicture identification\u201d, usually a driver\u2019s license.&nbsp;&nbsp;What is difficult for suburban voters to understand is that not everyone has a&nbsp;&nbsp;license.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, only 62% of 18 year-olds, and 90% of 30 to 34 year-olds in Ohio have a license (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/datacentral\/2019\/09\/why-using-ohio-bmv-list-to-register-voters-misses-many-far-fewer-young-people-drive.html\">Cleveland.com<\/a>). Sure, they can get a State Identification Card, if they can get to the BMV.&nbsp;&nbsp;But if they don\u2019t need if for \u201cmore important\u201d facets of life, things like getting bank accounts for direct deposit, then why should it be required to vote?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Pure Is It?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The old Cincinnati soap company, Proctor and Gamble, claimed that Ivory Soap was \u201c99+44\/100% Pure\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elections in Ohio are even better than that, 99.999548% secure.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Republican Secretary of State brags about how secure our elections are, even with early and mail-in voting.&nbsp;&nbsp;So why is the MAGA-Republican legislature trying to \u201cfix what ain\u2019t broke\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Because, if voting in Ohio were easy, more Democrats would vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;And more Democrats voting is a threat to the Republican hegemony in state government.&nbsp;&nbsp;Not only does partisan Gerrymandering drastically tilt the scales to the GOP, but they want to make sure that what might be a Democratic majority in the state can never express their will.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the best way to do that, is keep them from voting.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Adding more layers to a voting process that \u201cain\u2019t broke\u201d isn\u2019t \u201cfixing\u201d, it\u2019s \u201crigging\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s what\u2019s happening right now, in Columbus, at the State House.&nbsp;&nbsp;Standing on the \u201cpurity\u201d of election protection, MAGA-Republican legislators are doing one more thing to maintain their power in the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are making sure it\u2019s harder to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Depths<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s happening all over the country, wherever Republicans are in control.&nbsp;&nbsp;From Georgia to Arizona, the false cries of MAGA \u201cstolen election\u201d advocates are creating laws to suppress the vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because if you can\u2019t win the election outright, you\u2019ve got to rig it.
